HARRIS, Velma Marion - 95, Coldbrook, passed away on Tuesday, July 24, 2007, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Blomidon, she was a daughter of the late Kenneth and Minnie (Barkhouse) Legge. Velma was a member of New Minas United Church. She was a very caring and loving person who always shared her hospitality with her family, whom she loved very much. Velma is survived by sons, Donnie (Betty), Centreville; Gerald (Marlene), Cambridge; Stephen (Marion), Coldbrook; Bill, Victoria, B.C.; sisters, Leota Bezanson, Sackville; Rolene Dwyer, New Glasgow; brothers, Russell, Lunenburg; Erlyn and Ira, both of Blomidon; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ingram Willis Harris; sister, Nora Ells; brother, Sheldon Legge; in infancy her sister, Nellie; brother, James; grandson, Chris. Visitation for Velma Harris will be held from 7-9 p.m. today with a funeral service held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 27, followed by a reception, which will all take place in H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 5 Leverett Ave., Kentville, with Rev. Michael Gibbons officiating. Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, in Blomidon Cemetery, Hustis Beach. HAWKESWORTH, Marion Abbie - 88, Wolfville, passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2007, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Lake George, Kings Co., she was a daughter of the late Clyde and Bessie (Day) Lutz. Marion was raised by her late foster parents, Austin and Carrie Clem of Viewmount, Kings Co. She had been a member of Belmont Baptist Church in Colchester County. She worked for a number of years with her husband, Bruce, in his business at Annandale Guest Home, Wolfville, and continued to run it for several years after his passing. Upon her retirement, she moved to the Wolfville area to be with her daughter and husband, Evelyn and Gary Morine. She is survived by daughter, Evelyn (Gary) Morine, Ridge Road, Kings Co.; son, Wilfred (Joan), Hythe, Alta.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; half-sisters, Greta Baltzer, Audrey Lutz, Lillian Lutz, Valreta (Robert) Langille and Alberta Lutz; half-brothers, Clinton (Doris) Lutz and Clyde Nelson Jr. (Lois); foster brother, Lorimer (Shirley) Clem. She was predeceased by her husband, Bruce; daughter, Marjorie; sister, Dorothy Crocker; half-sister, Shirley; half-brother, Fred Lutz; foster sister, Addie DeEll. HIRTLE, Ida Griffin - 80, New Minas, Kings Co., passed away Sunday, July 31, 2005, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Avonport, Kings Co., she was a daughter of the late Russell and Mary Elizabeth (Holmes) MacDonald. Ida was a member of the Highland Senior Citizens Club in New Minas. She is survived by daughter, Sharon Hirtle, Canning; son, Rick (Connie) Hirtle, Fort McMurray, Alta.; grandchildren, Craig, Tammy, Tony and Nissa; great-grandchildren, Mitchell and Kennedi; sisters, Shirley Burgess, Bedford; Lois (Albert) Schofield, Greenwich; Jean (Frank) Sanford, New Minas; Helen Huntley, Berwick; Roxie (Russell) Redden, Somerset; Margaret "Bunny" (William) Workman, Victoria, B.C.; special niece, Mary Ann Munroe and several other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Laurie; brothers, Clarence and William; sisters, Laura Hutt, Doris Lawrence, Elizabeth McBay and Mary in infancy. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Wednesday in Annapolis Valley Funeral Home, Coldbrook, followed by cremation. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday followed by a reception, both in Annapolis Valley Funeral Home, Coldbrook, Pastor Pamela Estey and Pastor Phil Locke officiating. HOVELL, Albert Ernest - 87, Church Street, Port Williams, passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2005, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. He was born on August 2, 1918, in Grafton, Kings Co., but later moved to Church Street and resided there until September of 2004 when he became a guest at Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. He was the second son of the late Frederick John and Annie Leveretta (Lockwood) Hovell. He was a veteran (Canadian Army) and served overseas with the Royal Canadian Engineers in the Second World War but returned to Canada in 1942 after being involved in a motorcycle accident in England. His varied working career ranged from farm labourer to soldier to feed mill foreman, until such time when he became the first Port Williams Assistant Postmaster in 1953 and fifth Port Williams Postmaster in 1961. He retired from Canada Post in 1979. He was a member of the Canadian Postmasters Association. He was an active hobby farmer and will be remembered as the owner of Gloria - the renowned and record setting Guernsey cow that lived for 30 years and reared 40 calves. Along with raising Hereford cattle, he later, with his granddaughter, raised prize winning purebred Suffolk sheep. Albert was a lifelong member of St. John's Anglican Church, Parish of Cornwallis where he was a Warden and member of the Parish Council, choir, men's club and Fox Hill Cemetery Committee. He was recognized as a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion in 1995 and was a member of the Dr. C.B. Lumsden MM Branch No. 74, Wolfville for over 60 years. As an avid singer, he was a member of the male choir of the Royal Canadian Legion Habitant Branch No. 73, Canning. He was presented with a Certificate of Merit for his dedicated service to the Royal Canadian Legion. Albert was a Charter Member of the Port Williams & District Lions Club and served as Vice-president and Director. In 1983, he was instrumental in launching the Neighbourhood Watch Program in Port Williams in cooperation with the RCMP. The Club received a Crime Prevention Award from the Solicitor General of Canada to recognize this outstanding community effort. His ticket selling abilities have yet to be surpassed by members. In April 2005, he was presented with a 35-Year Charter Monarch Award. He was a former member of the Wolfville Curling Club and Haley Dancers' Square Dancing Club. In his retirement, he was an enthusiastic supporter of the Cornwallis Project 4-H Club while his grandchildren were both members and enjoyed tending to his gardens, in particular his gladiolas. He was a supporter of the Progressive Conservative Association of Nova Scotia and the Conservative Party of Canada. In more recent years, Albert fulfilled a lifelong desire to travel back to England, vacation in Bermuda and visit the Calgary Stampede. He is survived by son, Ernie (Marilyn), Church Street; grandson, David (Emily), Port Williams; granddaughter, Cheryl (Aaron) Lake, Calgary; great-granddaughter, Taylor Ann Hovell, Port Williams; sisters, Edith Coldwell, Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville, and Jean Farris, New Minas; brother, Charles (Eileen) Hovell, New Minas; special cousins, Arthur (Betty) Lockwood, Kentville, and Enid Hunt, West Drayton, England; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Marion (Magee). Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, August 7, with a Royal Canadian Legion remembrance service at 7 p.m. and a Lions Club memorial service at 8 p.m., all in White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, August 8, in St. John's Anglican Church, Parish of Cornwallis, Church Street, Port Williams, Rev. David Garrett officiating. Burial will take place in Fox Hill Cemetery, Lower Church Street, Port Williams. Family flowers only. Donations in memory may be made to St. John's Anglican Church Memorial Trust Fund. HOWELL, James Alonzo - husband of the late Susie (Downey) Howell, died Saturday, July 22, at the Walter E. Fernald School, Waltham, Mass. Mrs. Howell died last January. He was employed as a nurse at the Walter E. Fernald School for 15 years, and was a resident of Waltham, for the past 36 years. Mr. Howell was born in Cornwallis, N. S., April 12, 1873, a son of the late Edward and Caroline (Bowlby) Howell. He is survived by two sons - Cecil V., of Simsbury, Conn., and Harold A., of Orangebury, S. C.; one daughter - Mrs. Bernice F. Moore. of Dover, N. H.; three grandchildren; three sisters - Mrs. Florence M. Hamilton, of Waltham, Mass.; Mrs. Lottie C. Ward, of Weston, N. S.; three brothers - Charles B. and Alton R. of Roxbury, Mass., and Leslie, of Welsford, N. S. The funeral was conducted in the Wentworth Chapel, 30 Prospect Street, Rev. Gordon Tate, pastor of the Lakeview Union Evangelical Church, officiated, reading "Crossing The Bar" by Tennyson and other poems. Paul D. Wentworth was at the console and the tenor soloist, Russell Porter Wentworth, sang "Saved By Grace" and "Rock of Ages". There was a large gathering of relatives, neighbors and friends and a representation of associates in the Walter E. Fernald School. Rev. Mr. Tate read the prayers in Mt. Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
