GATES, Gerald - a young Nictaux Falls business man, 27 years old, was admitted to the Soldier's Memorial Hospital, Saturday morning, about 2 o'clock, suffering from gunshot wounds from which he died about 9:27 the same morning. Dr. F. S. Messenger, held an inquest at 1:30 with a jury, consisting of W. R. Turner, foreman, W. D. Rice, F. E. Bentley, E. S. Goudge, J. H. Potter. G. M .Moore, E. O. Wood, L. S. Shaffner, W. S. Pineo, A. J. Mitchell, J. P. Dodge, P. E. Black. After viewing the body at the hospital the inquiry adjourned to the town hall, where several witnesses were called. Albert Gates, brother of the deceased, said that his mother had called him about 12:45 and told him that Gerald had come home a few minutes before and she had seen him put his car in the garage and go across to the store and then in a little while she had heard the sound of a gun being fired. He heard the sound of another shot, as he hurried to the store, and the cry of his brother for help. He found Gerald on the floor with a rifle by his side and was told by his brother that he had shot himself and to get a doctor. Mrs. Lucy Graham, night operator in the local telephone office, said that she had received a call at 12:45 from Gerald Gates, saying that he had shot himself and to call Dr. Kelley as quickly as she could. Dr. H. E. Kelley told of receiving the telephone call and finding the deceased suffering from gunshot wounds in the stomach. On removing his clothing, he found marks of the powder around the wound where the bullet had entered the body, showing that it had been fired in close proximity to the wound. He had brought him to the hospital, where with Dr. J. A. Sponagle and Dr. L. R. Morse, an operation had been performed, but Mr. Gates died at 9:27 o'clock. The evidence did not show that any one had been with the deceased at the time of the affair. After some consideration, the jury brought in the following verdict: "We, the undersigned, impended to inquire into the death of Gerald Gates, of Nictaux Falls, after hearing the evidence, have come to the conclusion that the said Gerald Gates came to his death this morning at the Soldier's Memorial Hospital at 9:27 as a result of gunshot wounds inflicted in the office of his store at Nictaux Falls, about 12:45 a.m., by himself; whether intentional or accidental, the jury is not in a position to state." He is survived by his wife and seven-year-old daughter, Marcia at present visiting her parents, Rev. R. F. Allen and wife, of South Glen Falls, N. Y., his mother, Mrs. Lindsay Gates, and brother, Albert, of Nictaux Falls. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, following the arrival of his wife and daughter.
