MacBURNIE, George Edmondson - 86, Hantsport, passed away
April 11, 1997, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in
Tatamagouche, he was the son of the late Gordon MacBurnie and
Flora (Tattrie). George came to Hantsport in August of 1932 for
what was supposed to be a two week period to pitch for the very
well-known Hantsport Shamrocks, and resided in town until his
death. Not only did he help the Shamrocks win the Valley
Championship that year, but for eight consecutive years in a row
until 1940 at which time the outbreak of war put an end to
baseball in N. S. During his eight-year career, he became known
as a "sterling right-hander'' and later as the greatest
"Ironman'' in the history of baseball in N. S. During his life
in Hantsport, he worked at Minas Basin Pulp and Power Company
Ltd., as well as for a paving company installing the road
between Wolfville and Dice Hill, The Gypsum Company, the Fruit
Company, and finally, following in his father's footsteps, he
opened his own barbershop in 1934, which he continued to operate
until retirement. He was a member of St. James United Church,
and a recipient of a 50 year jewel form Poyntz Masonic Lodge,
Hantsport. After retirement, his interests were working around
his garden, enjoying a good game of 45's or crib, and just plain
reminiscing about the days when baseball was so strong in N. S.
He is survived by one son, Gordon, Dartmouth; daughters, Barbara
(Mrs. Joe Logan), Ann (Mrs. Robert Burden), Hantsport; one
brother, Austin, Tatamagouche; one sister, Mabel Clifford,
Tatamagouche; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.
