LOCATION:
The Hammonds Plains Road known as Route #216 travels
through the four communities from Millview Cove on the Bedford Basin
to Upper Tantallon in St. Margaret's Bay.
Farther along Hammonds Plains Road to the right is
Yankeetown Road. A few more miles the road forks, turning left
leading to Upper Hammonds Plains and Pockwock Lake.
Lucasville covers the small community along the
Lucasville Road between Hammonds Plains and Sackville.
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
The Hammonds Plains area was named for Sir Andrew
Snape Hamonds (Hammond), Lieutenant Governor from 1781 to 1782.
Pockwock is a Mi'kmaq word that means 'the place you
can go no farther,' and was aptly used here as Pockwock's road ends
at the lake. Also an area known as English Corner during the early
1800s, some old documents refer to it as The Great Pock-Quack while
others named it Moose Town.
Lucasville was named for James Lucas (Locas), an
early pioneer.
A number of prominent Halifax merchants were granted
land in the area of Lucasville Road that they did not develop. The
lands were then re-offered in 1785 to Loyalist families who settled
in an area that they called Yankeetown.
HISTORY:
The Hammonds Plains road was one of the first roads
built by the municipality as part of the route that was to link
Halifax with the Annapolis Valley.
