Marriage Notes for JOHN HILCHEY and ALICE GERARD:

John Charles is noted as a widower in the records of Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Married at the house of Mrs. Isaac Gerrard.

Witnesses: ?, Elizabeth Cameron. Note: Elizabeth Alice was written, then crossed out and Alice Bessie written over.

17. WILLIAM4 HILCHEY (JOHN VALENTINE3, DAVID2 UELTSCHI, JACOB1) was born Abt. 1820. He married RACHEL NEWCOMB December 31, 1842 in Pope's Harbour, Nova Scotia. She was born 1822.

Notes for WILLIAM HILCHEY: Possible Marriage confusion:

William Hilchey b. abt. 1820 (son of John Valentine) and Rachel b. abt. 1822, and William John Hilchey b. January 25, 1921 (son of George Hilchey), who is recorded to have married Rachel Newcombe b. February 13, 1843.

Based on marriage the same day of Mary Ann Hilchey, it is perhaps more reasonable to conclude double wedding of brother and sister.

The 1871 Census lists this as Dwelling #172, Family #205 consisting of William, Rachel and their other children excepting the elder Mary, who is also in the same dwelling but listed in Family #204 of the census.

I only had record of first daughter Mary, John, another Mary, and Ann. **Other children are added based on their inclusion in the census only--no other verification.** Ann is listed as age 12, which would make her birth year between 1858 and 1859, not 1856 as is recorded. Two Mary's are recorded in the family file, and I don't know if this is an error or not. In 1881, Mary E. is in the home, b. abt. 1858 (not 1855 as recorded in the family file). --Maggie McCracken, 2002.

Marriage Notes for WILLIAM HILCHEY and RACHEL NEWCOMB:

From Vital Statistics from Nova Scotia Newspapers:
Mon. 20 Mar. 1843 [Halifax Journal] [married] 31 Dec. 1842 at Pope's Harbour : William HILCHIE / Miss Rachel NEWCOME. --transcribed by Phil Gerrard, 2001.

**Rachel's last name and date of marriage derived from this information**
Probable double marriage with William's sister Mary Ann Hilchey who married Michael Conrad.

Children of WILLIAM HILCHEY and RACHEL NEWCOMB are:

i. MARY5 HILCHEY, b. 1844; m. STILLMAN FORREST; b. Bet. 1834 - 1835.

Notes for MARY HILCHEY:

In the 1871 Census this is Dwelling #172, Family #205 and consists of Stillman, wife Mary and their children. **Children all added based on census data only. Based on same information, I am placing John Forrest as Stillman's brother pending any evidence to the contrary.** Cannot place Winston Corbin (listed as Conlin in one transcribed version). In the same dwelling is Family #205, Mary's parents William and Rachel Hilchey with their other children, her siblings.--Maggie McCracken, 2002.

18. GEORGE FREDERICK4 HILCHEY (JOHN VALENTINE3, DAVID2 UELTSCHI, JACOB1) was born February 20, 1820, and died April 10, 1882 in Beaver Harbour, Halifax County, Nova Scotia. He married ELIZA ANN HAWBOLT December 20, 1853. She was born 1827 in Beaver Harbour, Halifax County, Nova Scotia, and died October 05, 1892.

Children of GEORGE HILCHEY and ELIZA HAWBOLT are:

i. GEORGE5 HILCHEY.

ii. ANNIE J. HILCHEY, b. 1862.

iii. SARAH C. HILCHEY, b. 1864.

iv. MARGARET M. HILCHEY, b. 1866; m. EDWARD D. BALCOM, September 07, 1887, Sheet Harbour, Halifax County, Nova Scotia.

19. FREDERICK4 HILCHEY (JOHN VALENTINE3, DAVID2 UELTSCHI, JACOB1) was born January 01, 1823 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. He married ELIZABETH MACGILVREY 1846 in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. She was born Abt. 1824.

Notes for FREDERICK HILCHEY:

The 1871 census has this household as Dwelling #107, Family #127. It is composed of Frederick and Eliza, and all children except Stephen, who could have been married by this time, or perhaps deceased. The same dwelling is also listed as the residence of Frederick's brother Stephen and his family (#128). Isaac's age is listed as 20, which would make his birth year 1851, not 1854. Eliza's age is listed as 17, which would make her birth year 1853 to 1854. Maybe she and Isaac got switched either in the recording or transcription of the census data. Louisa is listed as age 5, which would make her birth year 1866, not 1867. --Maggie McCracken, 2002.

20. MARY ANN4 HILCHEY (JOHN VALENTINE3, DAVID2 UELTSCHI, JACOB1) was born November 03, 1824. She married MICHAEL CONRAD December 31, 1842 in Pope's Harbour, Nova Scotia. He was born Bet. 1801 - 1802.

Notes for MARY ANN HILCHEY:

Possibly married Michael Conrad, based on information from Vital Statistics of Nova Scotia Newspapers:

Mon. 20 Mar 1843 [Halifax Journal] [married] 31 Dec 1842 at Pope's Harbour: Michael CONRAD / Miss Mary Ann HILSHIE. --Transcribed by Phil Gerrard, 2001

**Marriage to Michael Conrad and children given in census attached as theirs is all extrapolated information for working purposes only and may not be correct--subject to change as information arises.**

Notes for MICHAEL CONRAD:

**Marriage to Mary Ann Hilchey based on information from Vital Statistics of Nova Scotia Newspapers: Mon. 20 Mar 1843 [Halifax Journal] [married] 31 Dec 1842 at Pope's Harbour : Michael CONRAD / Miss Mary Ann HILSHIE. Birthdate derived soley from 1871 census, no other documentation.** Noted as unable to read and write.

Assuming the above, this is Dwelling #106, Family 126 in the 1871 Census. At that time, Mary Anne's brother Jacob lives in the previous dwelling, providing additional liklihood that this Mary Anne Hilchey is the correct spouse of Michael Conrad, though her listed age of 49 would make her birth year 1822, not 1824. Mary and Liticia [sic?] are both listed as age three, but not noted as twins, so were born very close together in order to both be 3 at the time of the census.--M. McCracken, 2002.

In 1881 the family composition changes, and there is a baby, William Henry, in the home. Given Mary Anne's age, it is not likely to be a child of hers in addition to the fact that she is now widowed. Most likely it is an illegitimate child of one of her daughters.

In the 1871 Census this is Family #128 in Dwelling #107, comprised of Stephen and his family. Also in the same dwelling is his brother Frederick and his family (#127). Stephen's age is listed as 46, which would make his birth year 1825, not 1827. Stephen is listed as age 5, which would make his birth year 1865 instead of 1864. 23. JOHN MARTIN4 PREST (HANNA SOPHIA3 HILCHEY, DAVID2 UELTSCHI, JACOB1) was born 1807 in Pope's Harbour, Nova Scotia, and died May 25, 1893 in Mooseland, Nova Scotia. He married (1) ELIZABETH MARGARET CATHERINE GLAWSON December 18, 1831, daughter of JOHN GLAWSON and ELIZABETH SHELNUT. She was born 1808, and died Bef. 1853. He married (2) MARY ANN ELIZABETH JACKSON December 1853, daughter of JOHN JACKSON and BARBARA HARVEY. She was born 1822 in County Harbour, Nova Scotia, and died 1895 in Mooseland, Nova Scotia.

Notes for JOHN MARTIN PREST:

The 1871 Census lists this as Dwelling #124, Family #151, consisting of John and his second wife, Mary Jackson Prest. Included are their children James, Adella (Ann) and Hannah. Also living in the home are children from his first marriage--Thomas, Sarah, Catherine and Hezekiah. All other children from his first marriage are married and out of the home by 1871.

Also in the same dwelling are Family #152, consisting of Augustus and Margaret Lawler and baby Martha. Augustus is the son of John's wife Mary from her first marriage to Captain George Lawlor.

Hezekiah is listed as Isaiah in one transcription of the census and Isithiah in another. Isithiah sounds enough like Hezekiah where I believe that is the correct name over Isaiah, it also being what I have in the family record. The 1881 Census also records it as such. However, Hezekiah is also listed as age 23, which would make his birth year 1847 or 1848, not 1850. Conversely, Thomas who is listed as 21 would have been born in 1848, and not 1850. Insofar as Hezekiah's middle name is THOMAS, it is possible that their birthdates were reversed.

Catherine and Sarah were originally recorded as one child, "Sarah Catherine", b. 1851. However, both transcriptions of the census I have seen list Sarah and Catherine as separate individuals, though both are age 19. Since they are not listed as twins, they must have been born very close together, both being 19 at the time the census was taken. (This is possible) ** The information now listed has been corrected based on the preceding.** --Maggie McCracken, 2002.

Notes for HATTIE MOORE:

It was usually spelled "Mooers" prior to Hattie's generation, but my grandfather also spelled it "Moore."

Around the turn of the century my grandfather Clarence and his wife came down from Sebec and lived in Topsham and so did Jennie Southard and her husband, Will Southard. Each couple had an "apartment" at what we now call "the Frost Mansion" in Topsham - back then there was an ell of apartments on the back of the main house. My mother said that my grandfather liked to play jokes and that Will Southard was very jealous - so if Jennie and my grandmother took the horse and buggy into town (Brunswick), my grandfather would sneak out when they came back and put one of his neckties in the wagon - and Will Southard would get all wound-up wanting to know what a man's necktie was doing in the wagon the women had taken to town.

I am the baby of my family; the only one of Hattie's siblings I ever met was Eva, when she was an old woman and I was a little girl. All the Mooers (and various spellings of it) buried in the Milo, Maine cemetary are descendents of David and Hannah Mooers' 15 children, and the Munros and Munroes buried there are all related one way or another to Samuel Mooers' wife Sarah Munro.-- per Susan Moore, [email protected]

He and most of his children changed the spelling of their surname to Gerard in the early 1890's, but for this record's sake, I keep it as Gerrard. The 1871 census also shows Mary Hennbury (age 33) and her two sons, Abram (age 7) and Henry (age 5), in the residence, along with Catherine Whynoch (age 16)." --Roger Gerard

The 1871 Census lists Isaac as living in Dwelling #194 in Family #232 which consisted of himself, wife and family, and sister Mary and her three children. She is the Mary referred to above--twice widowed. Catherine is her daughter from her first marriage. "Simion" is Seymor. Margaret is listed as ten, making her birth year between 1860-61, not 1865--this is the most glaring discrepancy. Mary is listed as 16 in the census, which would make her born between 1855-1856, not 1854. Annie May is listed as age 5, making her birth year 1965-1866, not 1867.  --Maggie McCracken, 2002

Notes for EDWARD ISAAC PREST:

The 1871 Census lists this as Dwelling #115, Family #137 and consists of Edward and wife Ann, and children Emmeline, Walter, Florence, Alfred and Maud. One transcription of this census lists Maud as "Wanda" which is probably incorrect, as the other matches the family record. John Hilchey is probably Edward's uncle John Martin Hilchey, who was widowed in 1869. Cannot place William Prest--he is listed as married so could be either Edward's brother William Richard or nephew, William Isaac. Don't know why he is living without his spouse if married and not widowed. --Maggie McCracken, 2002.

He married MARY ANN DAVIDSON 1866 in Spry Harbour, Nova Scotia, daughter of WILLIAM DAVIDSON and MARY TROOP. She was born 1827 in Isaac's Harbour, Nova Scotia, and died 1892 in Spry Bay, Nova Scotia.

Notes for MARY ANN DAVIDSON:

The 1871 Census lists Mary living in the home of her sister, Elizabeth Davidson Prest and her family. Mary's husband William is not recorded in the census, but she is listed as married, which is probably an error since he does appear in the 1881 Census. There is is listed as 42 which would make his birth year 1838-39, not 1832. Mary is listed as age 40, which would make her birth year 1830-31, not 1827. Mary is also recorded as having another child who is not listed in this census. Also, Sarah is listed 5 at the time of the census, but 10 years later in 1881 she is 13, which supports her birth date as recorded here.

Notes for JOHN POWDER HILCHEY:

Information about John Powder Hilchey comes specifically from Elizabeth Hewitt's site:  http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/e/w/Elizabeth-A-Hewitt/ and has not been verified. I had no previous record of him as a child of Thomas Hilchey and Mary Ellen Prest. His supposed son Harry St. Clair Hilchey is the only one of his listed children I had record of, EXCEPT that I also have his parents are recorded as Stanley Hilchey and Loretta Lawlor. Since the name "Harry St. Clair Hilchey" is NOT a common one, I do not expect that there are two different individuals with this name, so there is an obvious error somewhere.

Possibly the two childrens birthdates got mixed up, but 1870 would still have to be 1868 or nine to match the census ages. --Maggie McCracken, 2002.
