Another Oxford Hero Gives Life in Action On Friday

The sad news was received here by relatives that Private ALLEN THORNTHWAITE, the only son of Mrs. LOIS THORNTHWAITE had died of wounds received while gallantly doing his bit for King and Country in the firing line. His cousins, R.R. and A.G. HICKMAN left for Debert, where the mother is residing at present with her daughter, Mrs. D.H. WEBB to break the news. Private THORNTHWAITE enlisted with the 193rd squad and drilled here for a time, after proceeding with the others to Aldershot and later to England and to the front in France. The bereaved mother and sister will have the deepest sympathy in their bereavement.

There are still some casualty lists of Canadian soldiers engaged in the last battle at Mons.

OBIT - Rev. W. GERARD CHEESE

Rev. George O. CHEESE, of Oxford, Nova Scotia, received a cable on Saturday evening containing the sad news of the death in France of his young brother, the Rev. W. GERARD CHEESE. A letter received on the previous day had informed him of his being dangerously ill. The late Rev. W. GERARD CHEESE was vicar of Duddington, near Peterborough, England, but since early in the war had served as a chaplain in the army, first at Woolwich, then at Saloniki, after that for a short time in Egypt and then until recently in Mesopotamia. In July last he returned to his parish in England at the request of his bishop, but feeling that his services might yet be required by the army, with his bishop's consent, he again offered himself as chaplain and was accepted. This time he was sent to France and on or about October 27th when at the front, he was taken down with Spanish influenza, broncho-pneumonia set in and he passed away on the 7th inst. He found some kind friends in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick during his short visit in 1905,1910 and 1911. He was in his 36th year.

OBIT - JOHN L. McDONALD

Mr. JOHN L. McDONALD of Stake Road died at his home on Thursday, Nov. 21st aged 63 years. The funeral service was held in St. James Presbyterian Church, of which he as a valued member, being an elder and the superintendent of the Sunday School. He was unmarried. Rev. J.W. BRITTON, Presbyterian, conducted the services assisted by Rev. Mr. OUTERBRIDGE, Methodist of Wallace. Rev. Mr. BRITTON sang the hymn, "Some Day the Silver Cord will Break". A large number of people were in attendance. Mrs. H.A. PATTON, a cousin of the deceased, was present.

OBIT - MILLARD REXFORD WOODWORTH

The death occurred at the home of ARTHUR THOMPSON, Pugwash Jct, of MILLARD REXFORD WOODWORTH, son of ISRAEL and the Late AMELIA WOODWORTH of November after an illness of only 4 days. He was 26 years of age, a young man of a kind and loving disposition and was well liked and respected by all who knew him. He is survived by a son, brother, father and one sister. Interment took place in Wentworth.

WEDDING - FORBES - PERRIN

The marriage of Mr. HUGH FORBES of Parrsboro and Miss ELIZABETH PERRIN of Londonderry took place at the Baptist Parsonage on Tuesday evening, Nov. 5th. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Z.L. FASH. The bride was becomingly attired in a burgundy costume with hat to match. Mr. & Mrs. FORBES will reside at Riverside.

Wm T. SEAMAN of Brockton, Mass spent the weekend with his sister Mrs. JAMES RHINDRESS. He in company with his brother J. ARCHIE being home to attend the funeral of their mother, Mrs. ELIZABETH SEAMAN, Wallace, NS.

OBIT - Mr. ARTHUR NELSON

The death of Mr. ARTHUR NELSON occurred at the Victoria General Hospital at Halifax on Thursday, Nov. 14th. The late Mr. NELSON was in his 57 year, and was a son of the late RICHARD NELSON and Mrs. NELSON of this town. Of a quiet disposition Mr. NELSON was a man who made many friends. He had been in failing health for sometime but was only bedfast for about 4 weeks previous to his death. His doctor advised an operation thinking that might possibly save his life, and he was removed to the Victoria General Hospital, Nov. 7th and passed away one week later. Although a great sufferer, Mr. NELSON never complained, and was conscious until about one half hour before his death. In religion, he was a Baptist, and in politics a staunch Liberal. The burial took place at the Chapman Cemetery, Wallace River, the following Tuesday and was
largely attended, Rev. Mr. LUND of Pugwash being the officiating clergyman.

The late Mr. NELSON is survived by an aged mother, Mrs. RICHARD NELSON of Oxford, who will have the deepest sympathy of her many friends in this her hour of sorrow, also by a wife and 6 children:

WALTER, who is a patient at the Highland View Hospital, Amherst and MONA, EVA and NOEL at home all left to mourn the loss of a kind and
loving husband and father.

Mrs. G.P. CARLSON of Kokomo, Col., and
CHARLES MURRILL of Leadville Col., all who have the sincerest sympathy of the host of friends through out the County.

OBIT - JOHN F. LEASK

The death of JOHN F. LEASK took place at 3 o'clock am, Sunday Nov. 17th at his home in Hartford leaving a widow and 2 sons to mourn their loss. The funeral took place Monday afternoon very impressive service was held at the home of the deceased by the Rev. A. LUND of Pugwash after which his remains were followed to Chapman Cemetery by his relatives and many friends where he was laid to rest, Mr. F.M. BROWN of Pugwash being the undertaker.
The pall bearers were ALEX HARRISON, ASHFORD CRAWFORD, PERCY McKIM and JAMES CHAPMAN.

MEMORIAL SERVICE

A very interesting service in honor and memory of the late Private LEWELLYN RUSHTON, the foster son of Mr. & Mrs. FREEMAN ADSHADE of Little River, was held in the Baptist Church at that place on Sunday morning..
Pastor P. R. HAYDEN gave an excellent, appropriate address to the large number of people who were present to honor the departed here, who nobly gave his life for his Country in France. Below the pulpit a photo and a framed picture of Private RUSHTON were shown, draped in flags.

OBIT - ERNEST MITCHELL

Mr. & Mrs. D.J. MITCHELL, West Pugwash are mourning today the death of their eldest son, ERNEST who passed away Thursday evening Nov. 28th after a few weeks illness from Tumor on the Liver. Ernest was an upright, industrious young man, who will be much missed in the home and community in which he lived. He was 28 years of age. Besides his parents, he leaves to mourn, one brother T.A. MITCHELL, Pugwash River and one sister, RUTH, at home, besides a large circle of other relatives.
The funeral which was held on Monday, Dec 2nd at 2 pm was very largely attended, the Rev. J.R. MILLAR officiating at the house, the Odd Fellows taking charge t the grave.

Misses LAURA 7 EDNA MYATT left on Wednesday for Providence, RI where they will remain for some time.

WILLARD RUSHTON of Moncton is spending the day with his mother, Mrs. ELLA RUSHTON.

Mrs. ELLSWORTH LANGILLE, Tatamagouche, spent the week end with her father, Mr. ALEX DEMINGS.

Mrs. ELIZA HENDERSON and her daughter, Mrs. A. G. MacKENZIE who have been summering in Pugwash, left on Saturday for New York where Mrs. HENDERSON will spend the with with Mr. EDWARD HENDERSON, Mrs. MacKENZIE returning to her home in Amherst after a few week's visit.

Mrs. ALEX MacFARLANE of Edmonton, Alta, who is visiting her parents, Mr. & Mrs. FRANK ANGEVINE, Middleboro was a guest of Mr. & Mrs. S.P. BORDEN on Thursday.

DIED
ALBERTA EMBREE a young daughter of Mr. & Mrs. ALEX EMBREE, died from pneumonia, following an attack of influenza, on Friday evening. The funeral service was held on Saturday afternoon, Rev. P.R. HAYDEN being in charge and the burial took place in Pine Grove Cemetery.

OBIT - DAVID J. CARROLL

The death occurred at Stellarton on Saturday of last week of DAVID J. CARROLL, son of Mr. & Mrs. DAVID G. CARROLL, of Pictou. Deceased was a young man, 22 years of age, and was a fireman of the C.G.R. His death followed an attack of influenza.

OBIT - Miss EDNA HUNTER

The death occurred on Tuesday evening, Nov. 26th under very sad circumstances of Miss EDNA HUNTER, eldest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. NORMAN HUNTER, Parrsboro, aged 22 years. The young lady contracted Spanish Influenza about a week ago and pneumonia developed, which resulted in her death. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon from the home of her parents, Stanley Street, interment being in the Baptist cemetery, Service at the grave was conducted by Rev. Z.L. FASH.
The deceased is survived by her parents, one married sister, Mrs. COLBY SMITH and 9 brothers and sisters at home, all of whom together with the mother are at present very ill from the disease.
The stricken family have the sympathy of the community in their affliction.

OBIT - Mrs. J.T. BLENKHORN

At her home in Southampton on Nov. 19th. Mrs. J.T. BLENKHORN passed away at the age of 87 years. Her husband predeceased her 5 years ago. She was a consistent member of the Baptist Church for 60 years and a woman of amiable disposition and took an interest in nation, political and religious affairs. She leaves to mourn their loss 6 children, Mrs. NELSON, and
Mrs. BRADSHAW of Southampton,
Mrs. FILLMORE of Vancouver, BC and
Mrs. GEORGE CHISHOLM of Oxford and 2 sons,
GEORGE and CHARLES of Southampton.

OBIT - WILLIAM A. PEERS

WILLIAM ARCHIBALD PEERS only son of Mrs. DANIEL PEERS aged 46 years, died of a lingering illness. He was for a number of years a resident of Lobar Nevada, but the last year he spent seeking health in California, but not receiving any material benefit decided to return to his native climate, arriving about the 1st of Sept. Since then he has been gradually failing and passed peacefully away on Friday, Nov. 29th. He leaves a wife, at present in California, his mother and one sister, Mrs. ARTHUR HEWSON.

The funeral service was held on Sunday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, Rev. J.W. O'BRIEN officiating. The address was based on John 14th chapter. The hymns, Nearer My God to Thee, Rock of Ages, O God Our Help in Ages Past. The pall bearers were C.C. McNEIL, A. DUNSMORE, W.A.Z. BLAIR, S.B. PATTON. The burial was at Pine Grove Cemetery.

OBIT - Pte. JACOB W. PURDY

Pte. JACOB W. PURDY, son of Mr. & Mrs. ELISHA PURDY, of Belmont died of Spanish influenza on Nov. 8th at a military hospital at Calgary. He is survived by his parents, 7 brothers and 4 sisters. The brothers are S.S. of Truro;

DOUGLAS of Shoal Lake, Manitoba,
GRAHAM, of Cardale, Manitoba;
WILLIAM of Birtle, Manitoba and
HARRY a sapper in France. The sisters are:
