In May, 1987, the cornerstone of St. James Presbyterian Church, Oxford, was removed to reveal many historical articles when the church was built, prior to its opening in 1866. The cornerstone was laid on October 27, 1866. When the cavity in the cornerstone was opened, it revealed a glass bottle which contained a large and varied assortment of historical documents and relics from more than 100 years previously.
Oxford's many industries of 1866 were represented by business cards, etc.: Oxford Manufacturing co., Woolen Manufacturers, John Ross, William Oxley, Geo. D. Hewson, Matilda Thompson, John G. Wells, H.L. Hewson, A. McPherson & Co. (foundry), Machinsts; Oxford Furniture Co., Henry Treen, Hy Davis, Rufus Wood, Wm. McIntosh, J.H. Treen, Manager; Eureka Manufacturing Co., furniture of all kinds; A.E. King, manager; H.S. Smith, secretary; W.R. Slade, A. McIntosh, Alex McDonald, Arthur Hewson, Wm Kenney, I.J. Hingley, A. McPherson.
Also in the cornerstone was a history of the church, written by I.J. Hingley. The contents of the 1866 cornerstone were put on display at the church. Later, they were photocopied and replaced in the cornerstone, along with similar documents from 1987.
