January 28, 1981

The Mollis Ceramics store on Pugwash Road suffered heavy smoke damage on January 20. The fire, believed to have started from a wood heater, was discovered burning in a floor beam and between the outside walls near the back of the building.

Two Canadian Salt Company employees, Fraser MACLEOD of Pugwash and Richard WINCHESTER of Oxford, were presented with Canadian Humane Society certificates for the part they played in the rescue of Jane BROWN from the Pugwash River in January 1980.

Died - Harold Lewis FERDINAND, 56 of Pugwash on January 23.

Thursday, February 2, 1961

The storm on January 20 caused a very high tide at North Wallace and portions of Brown's Bay and Livingston Bridge roads were flooded. Cars belonging to Harry LEARD and James DOTTON were partly submerged.

Died at South Oxford on January 23, Mrs. Lena RUSHTON, 82, for many years a resident of Westchester.

Thursday, February 8, 1951

A sawmill owned by Murdock Brothers narrowly escaped destruction by fire on Feb. 5th, when the diesel power unit caught fire. The mill was operated on the old Kent lot, Whirly Wha Lake, New Annan.

Died at Oxford on Feb. 5, Hiel Edgar ELDERKIN, age 75.

Thursday, February 5, 1931

Mr. A.S. DEWAR of Wallace, cut stone contractor, has purchased the Battye stone quarry at Wallace River, which has been idle for some years. A large number of men are now employed.

Norman MCBURNIE of Malagash is having his store remodeled.
An effort is being made by Oxford to raise a fund to open the road to Springhill for cars.

A Look Back....
Past Industries of Malagash.
A cheese factory, established in 1898, which operated for over 30 years.

At one time, there were five lobster factories between East Wallace and Saddle Island.

Malagash's major industry was the salt mine, which was developed following the discovery of the salt deposit in 1912. Up to 150 men were employed. The mine closed in 1959 when production was moved to the present mine at Pugwash.

Mr. T. SOUMAN erected a modern creamery on the Malagash Station Road, near the main highway. The Malagash Creamery operated until the early 1950's, when Mr. Souman retired and returned to his native Holland.

Herbert LARGE took over the former creamery buildings and operated Malagash Canners, until the plant burned in Dec. 23, 1964.
