Pugwash Man Committed Suicide
JAMES R. REID Shoots Himself in Eastern Trust Building on Prince Street.
Morning Chronicle, June 27th
A sad tragedy occurred in the Dominion Police Office in the Eastern Trust Building, June 27th, between 5 o'clock and half past five o'clock, when JAMES R. REID of New Glasgow, drew a revolver and shot himself through the heart expiring immediately before the eyes of his wife with whom he had been conversing. Up to a few days ago the deceased man had been a member of the Dominion Police, but had come here in the first place on reconstruction work. The police were informed of the tragedy by Inspector WEST and the medical examiner, Dr. FINN, was called on the scene, after which the body was removed to Snow's Undertaking rooms.
Shortly after the arrival of Detective KENNEDY a young woman with whom the deceased had an appointment arrived and when informed of the sad occurrence fainted. It later transpired that arrangements had been completed for the marriage of REID and herself today. The trunks were packed and passports at hand for the departure for the United States of the couple after the marriage. The young woman was assisted home, but was considerably shocked by the dreadful occurrence. It appears that REID had posed as a single man, although it was rumored that he was married. This he had denied to her, at the same time telling her that if ever anything happened to prevent her marrying him he would shoot her and then himself. He was a young man, being 21 years of age.Private N. F. PEARCE, Springhill Infantry is reported to have died.
Misses MARY A. CUSTANCE and ANNIE S. ALLEN, of Portland, Maine, ordained ministers of the Gospel, have taken charge of the work of the Pentecostal Church at Oxford.
