Thomas Family

I am looking for information regarding the family of Joseph Thomas (1752-1811) who came to Nova Scotia from Philadelphia PA, probably 1783 or 1784. He apparently settled in the Annapolis area as several Land Grants were issued for him . He was probably born in Wales. Joseph Thomas married Sarah (Sally) MacKenzie and was buried in the MacKenzie burial ground. I expect there were children, but I have no clue as to their names. I am especially interested in discovering if his father, Walter, and/or an uncle, Alexander, migrated with him. I have no other information on Walter and Alexander beyond their names and the fact that they arrived in the Pennsylvania from Wales. If there is any data on this family, I would appreciate knowing of it and receiving some guidance in getting whatever records are available, if any. Thank you for whatever help you might be able to provide.

From: G. Scott Gillis
Subject:
Gillis Family in southwestern Nova Scotia

I have been researching the line of Archibald Gilli(e)s who was granted land in Dalhousie West circa 1820. Records indicate he had two sons, Daniel and John, and possibly a third child (Calnek's History lists 3 but not by name). I have gathered fairly extensive records on Daniel's branch and feel I have prospects on John's branch which appears to have left the area by the 1862 census. There is strong evidence that some of his family may have ended up in the Yarmouth/Tusket area for awhile. Archibald had been a soldier in the British Army although the exact regiment is not certain. It appears that all Gillis's in this part of the province are likely tied to this individual. Anyone with connections to or information on this family feel free to contact me.

From: Phillip Chute
Subject
: Sophia Oikle

My grandfather, William Burkitt Fowler Chute, was born near Hampton Bay, Nova Scotia on Dec 24, 1851. In December, 1879 he married Sophia Oikle who was born at a Mic Mac Indian reservation. My father, Ernest Yorke Chute, was born on October 11, 1886 at Phinney Cove, Annapolis County Nova Scotia. The family farm is still at this address on the bay.

I would like to locate the Indian reservation and tribe where my grandmother was born. She would have been about the same age as my grandfather who married at 18, or perhaps younger. The above is all I have to go by and am not sure where further records would be maintained.

My mother's [Dorothy Bruce] father was Robert Bruce and emigrated directly from Scotland before the turn of the century. That family still lives about the Bruce farm in Truro or Greenwood. My father and mother moved to Massachusetts during the Depression.

From: Danny Himmelman
Subject
: Benjamin Daniels

My name is Danny Himmelman . I 'm doing research on my family , my problem is that I have ran into a name where I can't find a location for his Birth. I have been told that he was from the Annapolis Valley area but excatly where is unknown to me or other's.

His name is Benjamin Daniels he was born approx: 1826 , date of death is somewhat of a mystery to me but he is susposed to buried in the "Brookside Cemetery" in Bridgewater , Lunenburg county area but I had a friend check into it and there is a Benjamin Daniel buried there the only thing is his wife isn't buried there with him and the "s" isn't added to the end of the name Daniels.

This could be a common mistake I know , but the other thing is the date if he had died around the date 1886 which I have been told he couldn't have fathered most of his children because (1) of his children was born after this date.

Now what I'm wondering is if there is anyway I could find him through you guys. They had childern by the names of (william & spurgeon) whom died underage in the war , there was also James (jimmy) , Frank , Reuben , Arthur , John , and a possible Enoch ,
there was also Laura , Elizabeth , Ellie , Effie , and Lillas whom died as a infant. Now Arthur was born and named Arthur but his name changed to "Willis" a few days after birth, so his name would match his twin sister Lillas , when Lillas died (willis) was then re-named back to Arthur.

I'm hopeing that someone could give me a hand to find out where he was originaly from .

I have various connections to Welton, Spinney, Gates,Banks, harris,Elliott, Cropley (mary's portrait hangs in my livign room), etc., established by letters from older citizens such as Gladys Bishop of Lawrencetown, written in the 7o's and 80's, and from the occasional person still living such as Jean boutilier of Bedford and Evelyn Phinney Dodge of Margaretville.
