MAPES FAMILY CEMETERY

New Marker, Photo Nov. 3, 2001. The other marker for the Mapes Tract, which covered all the land on/near Boorman Road, no longer there.

The historic Mapes Family Cemetery, located on the corner of Rte. 211W and Boorman Road, Howells, Orange Co., New York. Boorman Road is on the left, just before the entry road to Howells. The cemetery is located on land with a residence (white house) which was not a Mapes residence. The historic marker is on the corner, near the driveway. Enter at the driveway (hill) from Rte. 211, it is a public access road, even though it seems to be private property. The cemetery is on your left at the top of the driveway. It is unkempt and deserted; dangerous to walk in summer when the grasses are high. It is about a half acre in size. The Mapes family home, which was "out Boorman Road", has been torn down, according to this resident.

MAPES FAMILY TRACT: Text from the old marker: "The Mapes Tract was 664 acres, Minisink Patent, acquired July 8, 1886 and cleared from wilderness by Samuel Mapes (1735-1820), Revolutionary Militiaman". Source: Photo, Joseph Boyle.
