"MARCELINO MARTINEZ, FIRST MAYOR, DIES"
QUESTA - MARCELINO MARTINEZ, this village's first mayor, a former State Senator, merchant, miner,
and town father, died Saturday (April 18) at 87. Martinez' grandfather, Pablo Martinez, was among
the first settlers who came from Abiqui in 1842 to found Questa. Community oriented, Martinez
served in 1964 as Questa's first mayor. He was elected State Senator on the Republican ticket and
served from 1941-44.

AT AGE 14, the young Marcelino Martinez left Questa with a companion to hop freights across the
southwest in search of work. Marcelino Martinez Jr. said his father told them the pair ate chile
for three meals a day because chile was the only thing they could read on menus.

He served during World War I as a combat engineer in the Rainbow Division under Gen. Douglas
MacArthur. He saw action at St. Mihiel and Meuse Argonne and emerged unscathed. After the war,
Martinez came back to work in the moly mine, during the days when donkeys hauled ore from under-
ground near Goat Hill to the mill. At various times, he owned and ran a grocery store, filling
station, bar and a trucking service that hauled supplies form Questa to the moly mine. He founded
the Questa Center, where his son Gomersindo today runs Questa Center Supermarket.

ALTHOUGH Martinez eventually came to own much real estate and commercial property, his sons say
his wife, Alfreda had the "business sense" in the family. They recall once when Martinez burst in
on the family gathered at supper to proudly announce he had just bought a truckload of lard at a 30
percent discount. The mother asked how, in those days before refrigeration, he would store so much
cooking fat. His solution: to hire workmen to dig a trench in ice and store the lard, at an expense
greater than the original 30 percent discount. He shared his earnings with fellow Questans. Virgil
Martinez recalls, "Dad always said that no child should go hungry when you have cattle on the hoof."
His sons recall his bringing an endless stream of uprooted Dust Bowl migrants, hungry families
bound for California, and hobos to his home for a meal or to his store for a loan of food or cash.

Martinez had a natural ability with numbers. Virgil Martinez said, "He didn't need a pencil and
paper to multiply, say 77 by 85. He could do it in his head." His sons described him as a great
believer in education "because he had so few opportunities himself." Martinez served on the school
board and ran his own bus into the Costilla area in hard times so that children could get to
school. The elder Martinez had little formal education himself, but his son Marcelino Jr., now 62,
was the first Questan to graduate from college, and all the Martinez sons have college degrees.
A rural man, Martinez always loved farming. Two months before his death, he was still working his
land along Cabresto Creek.

HIS SONS described him as a happy, jovial man who liked to play pranks. Virgil Martinez recalled
his father putting one over on a new waitress at El Seville Restaurant, where he always ate break-
fast. The first time she served him, he ate and then hid the plate. When she came by again, he made
the same order. She insisted he had already eaten; he insisted she hadn't served him; and he
wandered away muttering about the "poor state" of service.

HE IS SURVIVED by a brother, Emerenciano, 81, of Milliken, Colo.; a sister, Teodosia Cisneros, 89,
of Denver; five sons: Marcelino of San Diego, Calif.; Virgil, Fred and Joe, all of Albuquerque; and
Gomersindo of Questa; 21-grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. His first wife, Alfreda Vialpando,
died in 1957; his second wife, Irene Chavez, died in 1975. Funeral services were Wednesday
(April 22) at First Assembly of God Church (English-speaking) in Questa. Martinez' death last week
from cancer was swift and his two-month illness without complaint. His last words of advice to his
sons were "Portense como hombres." (Conduct yourselves as men).

-------------------------

"HE StrETCHED OUT A HAND TO SHOW US" -- by Moises Rael
If by definition a leader is one who is concerned with the problems of his people, then MARCELINO
MARTINEZ was a great local leader. Marcelino was one who always put the interests of his followers
before his own, one who risked his life, his honor and his property for the welfare of those he
guided. He was one who always studied and broad-mindedly listened to the opinions of others.

He loved his people, and his people loved him.

At 14, Marcelino ran away from home to look for greener pastures in the fields of Utah. There he
felt like a prodigal son sometimes walking without shoes and going without eating for several days.
By the time he was 20 he had not only mastered the ways of comfortable survival in the wild west,
but he had become a senior in the greatest university of the world, the University of Hard Knocks.

HE RETURNED to Questa in his early 20s, quite mature in wisdom and very cognizant of the needs of
his people. Uncle Sam called him to the service of his country during the first World War. His
experiences in Germany gave him time for deep thoughts. The love of his people increased. He felt
the awakening of his spirit to a new life. After World War I he got employment with Molycorp hauling
ore to the mill, first by burros, then by horse drawn wagons and later in trucks. In the course of
time and by the standards of those days of depression, he was considered a wealthy man. He had the
largest store in Questa. He made extensive use of the credit card "La Libreta," which was a customers
notebook on which the clerk copied from his own records the date, the amount and the name of the
things purchased on credit. Because it was depression time, a great number of customers never paid
him on time, some never at all, yet he never denied them credit.

It can be said of him: We were hungry and he gave us something to eat.

ALL THIS TIME he was actively engaged with problems of the Cabresto Lake Irrigation Co. He was
instrumental in acquiring grants and loans to restore the already condemned dam of the Cabresto Lake.
He was also instrumental in organizing the community's water system.

We were thirsty and he gave us something to drink.

In those days borrowing money from a bank was very hard for people who didn't have a clear titled
property to mortgage. Yet when the need was grave, Marcelino looked at his people and their needs
and not to their warranty deeds. He offered advice, encouragement and money to those in need. His
terms were not a mortgage, not high interest rates, but trust.

We were in great need and he came to our rescue.

PERHAPS his most gratifying accomplishment was his instrumentality in establishing and nourishing
the Kit Carson Electric Cooperative. He guided it through its critical time heading it as president
for several years.

We were in the dark and he showed us the light.

He was always active in politics. He lead the Republican party as county party chairman for some
time. He was elected senator from his county. We were ignorant and prejudiced about politicians but
he showed by example how to be an honest politician. When Questa separated the management of its
schools from the county system, Marcelino was appointed board member of the new school district and
later elected president. When the new district lost its independence it was through his influence and
work that the State Board of Education granted the district independence again.

We were lost and he showed us the way.

There was hardly a venture in Questa where he was not involved, whether it was an acequia organiza-
tion, a community water system, a bond issue or a drive to raise money for schools or communtiy.
When Questa first decided to govern itself by a municipal system, Marcelino was drafted as its first
mayor.

When we were first trying to walk he stretched out his hand to show us the way.

When in a dying bed and one went to visit him, his parting words were: Dios te vendiga.
