(Page 672) Moses Bateman was born in the township of Fairfield, July 19, 1760; was the son of Nehemiah Bateman, and probably a descendant of John Bateman, one of the original settlers from Long Island, who came from there at the close of the seventeenth century.

Moses Bateman, like most of the Fairfield people, was an ardent Whig, and when the contest with Great Britain began, before he attained the age of eighteen, he became a member of Captain Pearsons company of militia, and then enlisted in the Continental Army. He was married three times, - first, to Hannah Jones, July 29, 1783; second, to Hannah Hogbin, March 17, 1791; and third, to Elizabeth Bateman, December 28, 1808. He had nine children all of who are now deceased except Dr. Eli E. Bateman, who resides in Cedarville. He is oldest son, Dr. Moses Bateman, was a surgeon of the militia in service at Billingsport, and died there November 7, 1814, in the thirtieth year of his age. The father had but little education, but was a man of sound judgement, and made good use of his opportunities. For many years he occupied a farm opposite the parsonage of Mr. Osborn, of whom he was a warm friend and supporter, and like him was a Democrat in politics. His principal business was a farmer, in which he was very successful, accumulating a very handsome estate. He was for several years a judge of the Court of Common Pleas, and for twenty years a justice of the peace, in which capacity he was much employed. He died August 12, 1841.
