HISTORY (& OTHER) MUSEUMS
  • Barrett House Museum (High Breeze Farm) – 173 Barrett Road in Highland Lakes. The Museum is sponsored by the Vernon Township Historic Society and is open all year on Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 4pm. It is filled with artifacts and antiques showing life in the 19th Century and features seasonal displays. An 1850’s kitchen garden was started during the Spring by Master Gardeners Group. It is open by appointment if arrangements are made in advance. For information call 973-764-4055 ext. 2278; 973-764-8554; or 973-764-8989. [Please call ahead to insure the museum is open, as it had closed in 2006 for repairs]

  • Foster-Amstrong House (c. 1790)
    320 River Road
    Montague, NJ
    Maintained by Montague Association for the Restoration of Community History (MARCH) as a museum. It is open on Sunday afternoons during the summer between the hours of 1 and 4pm, and by request for tours (Jan.- Oct ) It has displays of local interest and memorabilia. The house is also open the 2 weekends following Thanksgiving day for its Holiday Weekends!

    An exhibit of minerals indigenous to the Franklin area, including many different types of fluorescent rock samples. Rock collecting is also offered.

    This group is restoring a 1900’s ice cream parlor, blacksmith shop; also a private residence and the home of The County Theatre.

    A large file provides space for a file of clippings and records of the Township. Gifts and books selected from the library collection make up the nucleus of a reference collection. One way in which the Society is recording Stillwater history is by maintaining a file of family histories and genealogies at the Museum. Descendants of early residents as well as those now living in Stillwater are invited to contribute to this file.

    Old Schoolhouse and Firehouse Museum

    This old building originally was a 1910, two-story brick addition to a building that had been erected in 1872 and was the last of a series of four early schools built in Ogdensburg. In 1930, the original part of the building was demolished and the addition moved to its present site and was converted to the house the borough's first firehouse and was used as such until 1972.

    This building is a preserved New Jersey landmark which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

    Newton Fire Museum

    The museum is located in the old firehouse and the museum displays antique fire equipment.

    Peters Valley Craftsman

    This is a gallery and store featuring hundreds of handmade items produced by resident and American craftsman. The crafts village is open in the summer.

    Elias Van Bunschooten Museum

    In 1785, the Reverend Elias Van Bunschooten was sent by the Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church to take charge of three consistories, Maghagamack, Minisink and Walpack. He was thirty-seven when he went there and served the area for forty years until his death. This was his house and was built in 1787. They have a Genealogical Library with a large collection of Lineage books and the library is open by appointment.

    This is a 100-acre family park, featuring hundreds of North American and exotic wildlife. The museum displays a collection of antiques, antique automobiles, carriages and big game trophies.

    The Sterling Hill Mining Museum

    Visit a real underground mine. A National Historic Site "Non Profit Foundation"

    Waterloo Village

    This is a working restoration of this old community alongside the former Morris Canal. It features costumed guides, a grist mill, a general store and the Towpath Tavern. It is the home of the Waterloo Music Festival.

    Wild West City

    This is a re-creation of a village in the Wild West. It offers 22 shows a day, including stagecoach holdups and the gunfight at the OK Corral. Visitors can take pony, stagecoach, and train rides.
