Russeltown
by Bob Christine

Elias Andrew Russell came to New Brooklyn in 1860 as the age of 27.   He built a house, a store, and a tack shop on the property he owned on New Brooklyn Road, from the corner of Sicklerville/Cedar Brook Road for about 2 miles on both sides of the road.  Elias also owned property on Edgewood Rd. and Cedar Brook Rd.  Elias married Susan Hartman and together they had 9 boys and 4 girls.  Elias owned a sawmill and made slates for the crates that were sent to the railroad to be shipped.

Across the street from his house was a mill house where the family that worked the mill lived.  J. Frank Russell's, 5th son of Elias, home had a barn behind it which is where the crates were made.

This information was provides by Tony LoSasso, a member of the Historical Society of Winslow Township.  Other members of the society that are connected to this family are:

  • Nancy Cucciniello
  • Elizabeth Brimfield (Nancy's mother)

Nancy and Elizabeth are descendants of Elijah Russell, the father of Elias Russell.  Elijah had married Mary Kaighn.  Mary Kaighn was one of 12 children of Elias Kaighn, Sr.  Mary was also the sister of Elias Kaighn, Jr., the 3rd Mayor of Camden City.

Another of Mary Kaighn's brothers was James Kaighn, who is my great-great-grandfather.  James Kaighn married Mary Watson and is possibly a cousin to another of our society member, .
