Elias Andrew Russell came to New Brooklyn in 1860 as the age of 27.
He built a house, a store, and a tack shop on the property he owned on New Brooklyn
Road, from the corner of Sicklerville/Cedar Brook Road for about 2 miles on both sides of the
road. Elias also owned property on Edgewood Rd. and Cedar Brook Rd. Elias married
Susan Hartman and together they had 9 boys and 4 girls. Elias owned a sawmill and made
slates for the crates that were sent to the railroad to be shipped.
Across the street from his house was a mill house where the family that
worked the mill lived. J. Frank Russell's, 5th son of Elias, home had a barn behind it
which is where the crates were made.
