Niue was first settled by Huanaki and Fao, who voyaged by vaka (canoes) from Tonga, Samoa and Pukapuka Island in the Cook Islands. They named the island Motusefua. "The Rock," as Niue is affectionately known, is 1000 km west of the Cook Islands, in the South Pacific. Thirteen of our villages may be found along the 67 km circle island road. The Niuean Government is responsible for our internal affairs, while the New Zealand Government looks after Niue's foreign affairs. |

Vital Records Cyclone Heta has brought devastation to Niue's records. The LDS Church, which filmed them in 1994, is to present the Niuean Government with 26 rolls of microfilm, to replace what has been destroyed. Copies of the same have been presented to the Auckland Central City Library Research Centre in New Zealand.
