Judge David Hill was born December 12, 1833 in Berwick, Maine.  His father, Oliver, was  a  farmer,  with  fair education  for  his day. He had  strong common sense which  caused  him to stand high  among his friends.   He married Lucinda Hammonds of a somewhat distinguished family of Maine. In 1837 David Hill then moved to Sandwich.

Judge Hill was admitted to  the bar  in  1865 and   opened  an office at his home in Sandwich. He married June 4, 1865, Mary, daughter of William E. Moulton, of Parsonfield, Maine.  Their children were Walter and Bertha Mary. The Judge had been active in the Whig and Republican party.  He   also was a faithful Unitarian, and it  was  thought  he had   associations  with  the  Friends. He fully believed in movings of Spirit.

 He was a lover of literature and  possessed a wonderful retentive memory. His poem "Chocorua" has received  him high acclaim. His great popularity was quite evident.
