DUST TO DUST Ghost Towns of Eastern NE by Lowell Greunke
OTOE COUNTY (Continued from Vol 19 #1)
WYOMING--Wyoming was laid out in 1855 and had grown so fast that by 1856 a weekly newspaper was begun. During the early years of its existence, the citizens imagined Wyoming was to be the leading town of the upper Missouri. Before the completion of the Union Pacific Railroad, the Mormon emigrants bound for Salt Lake were brought from St. Louis by boat, and Wyoming was the point of debarkation and where their land carriage commenced. Two large houses were erected for the accomodation of the new converts. One house, a two story and basement stone edifice, was still standing in 1882. About three thousand Mormons wintered in the town. It was named for Wyoming, Pa. by the founders, that being their home base. After the Mormon exodus, Wyoming, or Dresden as it was later called, had a post office, two small stores, and two or three scores of people. By 1882 the village then known as Wyoming was merely a post oil ice two miles from the old site.

FORT CALHOUN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
75TH ANNIVERSARY, MAY 6, 1979
Serving God and the Community, 1904 - 1979
Originally, the Church was Congregational. The record reports,"A Union Sunday School was organized in Fort Calhoun through the influence of Mr. WAINWRIGHT in Blair. A Congregational Society was organized and a small church built. Mr. BROSS interested some eastern society in this organization, and they donated a silver communion set to the church." On Sunday evening, May 8, 1904, a meeting was held at the Fort Calhoun church. Reverend BRADEN, moderator, reported the action of the Omaha Presbytery as favorable to the following petition:
"To whom it may concern: We, the undersigned, do hereby individually and without prejudice, petition the official board of the Omaha Presbytery to accept our petitioners into your church by letter or otherwise, and to establish a Presbyterian organization at this place. To this end, we severally pledge our loyalty and support. Signed,

DUST TO DUST-Ghost
Towns of Eastern Nebraska by Lowell Greunke
Continued from Vol 19 #1
JEFFERSON COUNTY
MERIDIAN--Meridian was another town ruined by the failure to secure a railroad. It was a flourishing village with about 150 inhabitants in 1872 when the St. Joe & Western Railway passed about two miles north of it. The town was begun in 1865 by George WEISEL who built a saw mill, to which was soon added a grist mill. It was the first town in the county to be surveyed and platted. It was named for the sixth meridian, on which it was located. At the time it was bypassed by the railroad it had the largest, busiest hotel in the county. The post office was discontinued in November 1883. Meridian was made the county seat on the formation of Jefferson county. The seat was changed to Fairbury in 1871.

EDITOR'S NOTE: While checking through a booklet of abandoned cemeteries in Seward County to determine if they had been printed in the NEBRASKA ANCESTREE, I found this lineage chart among the pages. Perhaps it will open a door for someone's research. I also found that the abandoned cemeteries have been printed in Vol 1 #4 and continued in Vol 6 #1 and #2. The update to the original listings was submitted by Alta Krasser in Aug of 1978.

Many on Honor Roll of Elderly Persons In County
Thursday, January 14, 1937
In April of 1919 the Journal published a list of residents of Fairbury and vicinity who had reached the age of 75 years or over. The list at that time reached 105. On Sept. 18, 1930 another list was published and over 200 people were found of the age of 75 or over. At that time C.C. Caltaway headed the list his age being 95 years. Mr. Callaway passed away in February 1932, being over 97 years of age at the time of his death.
The present list shows 12 people in the county past 90 years of age. Sion Harriss who became 90 on the second day of January 1937, being the last to get on the list. This list contains the names of 41 persons 85 to 89 years old; 81 80 to 84, and 112 from 75 to 79, a total 75 or above of 246.
Fred Diethelm, who was shown to be next to the oldest person here six years ago, now heads the list, at the age of 96 years. We have included in the following list the date of birth, the year and the age attained up to Dec. 31, 1936. We have secured our information from the parties themselves, near relatives and some from records and have endeavored to have the list correct. We realize it is far from complete but plan on publishing another list about the first of March and would appreciate anyone who have reached the age of 75 or over giving us their names.
