15 August 1881:
Ross AUSTIN, 3 month 21 day old son of S. & Carrie AUSTIN died on Saturday, 31 July 1881. Burial in Elkhorn City Cemetery. Silas Austin purchased lot in 1886 in present cemetery. (GOGS records show Ross, his parents and possible brother on lot.)

19 August 1881:
Mr. PETERSON died on Saturday last near Waterloo. An old Danish man who recently came to this country. He was buried on Sunday at the Elkhorn City Cemetery. His family is not here. (No burial record found.)

30 September 1881:
Oscar F. ROYCE died September 23rd, age 54-1-25. He was born 29 July 1827 in Richford, VT where he lived the longest part of his life. He married 3 June 1855 to Ruby A. CORLIS of Richford, VT. She and 5 children survive. Oscar came to Nebraska in January 1880. Masonic funeral rites. Remains to the cemetery 6 miles Southeast of Waterloo. (GOGS records: in Old Elkhorn Cemetery with large plot marker: Oscar 1828-1881; Ruby 1831-1913.)

7 October 1881:
Mr & Mrs STEPHENS mourn the loss of their infant. Burial on Tuesday at cemetery South of Waterloo. (No burial record found.)

14 October 1881:
Delbert/Adelbert WILLIAMS died of paralysis, 10 Oct. near Valley Station in his 26th year. Son of J. M. WILLIAMS. (GOGS: Valley Cemetery; 26y 26d; others on lot.)

25 Nov. 1881:
Harvey DUBOIS died Saturday; lived 3 miles Northwest of Waterloo. He was born 18 Sept. 1832 in Ulster Co. NY in the town of New Paltz where he spent his early life. At age 30 he moved to Illinois for 3 years, since then has lived in Nebr. He leaves a wife and 3 children. Member of Masonic order. (GOGS records in Valley Cemetery: Harvey 18 Sept 1832-26 Nov. 1881; wife Catharine 13 Dec. 1835-30 July 1899.)

6 Jan. 1882:
Old Mr. DECKER died this morning, burial on Sunday. Lived 3 miles North of Waterloo. (No record of burial found.)

27 Jan. 1882:
Many in Omaha have small pox.
Daniel NEILSON living in Omaha, original victim, died yesterday. Buried in county poor farm.

Little girl of Mr & Mrs WEAVER of Elkhorn City died on the 22nd of February. (No burial found.)

3 March 1882:
Cora, 16 month old daughter of Mr & Mrs WEAVER of Elkhorn City died on 23 Feb. (Note: dates differ; no burial record found.)

31 March 1882:
Mrs. STEADMAN died on 29th of March. Lived 4 miles North of Waterloo on the John DAVIS farm. Mr. STEADMAN had just purchased a farm, arriving last week from Iowa. (No record of burial found.)

28 April 1882:
Berda, infant daughter of Frank & Ema GOETZ of Waterloo, died 22 April at age 15 months. Burial in Brittain graveyard. (No record of burial in Old Elkhorn/Britton cemetery.)
Mr. FORTUNATUS died. In Summer Hill news. (No record of burial found.)

19 May 1882:
Mrs. Hiram PATCHEN of Valley was buried at Byers Cemetery North of Valley. (No burial found.)

26 May 1882:
Infant son of Mr & Mrs Martin ELLIS died on Saturday morning last. (No burial found.)

2 June 1882:
Johnny ABRAM, over 7 years old; drowned in the Rawhide on Wednesday last. Son of John ABRAM. Burial in Elkhorn City Cemetery. Rev. WINTERS conducted services at the Elkhorn City schoolhouse. (GOGS: John E. ABRAHAM, 31 May 1882, age 7y 1m. s/o J.M. & C. ABRAHAM.)

16 June 1882:
Infant son of C. A. RANDALL buried on the 6th instant. Godfreyville news item. (No burial found.)

23 June 1882:
Isaac THOMPSON died of cancer last Sunday morning 18 June at his residence 5 miles South of Waterloo. Has a large family. (No burial found.)

29 April 1927:
Mrs. David FITCH died at her home in Arlington, Friday, 22 April. She was a resident of Douglas Co. for many years. She was born Ellen Jane PARKER on 8 March 1859 in Dallas Co. Iowa.

She married David H. FITCH on 29 May 1878, and moved to Douglas Co. about a year later where they resided on a farm. Upon leaving the farm they moved to Washington for 5 years, then to Arlington 7 years ago. They had 10 children of whom 2 are deceased: Mabel, age 13 years in 1891 and Ethel, 13 in 1903. Surviving children: Jesse Fitch, Lincoln; Mrs. Lizzie Falter, Bancroft, SD; George Fitch, Yankton, SD; Mrs. Hazel Schoenauer, Plainview, Nebr.; Mrs. Jennie Marsh, Osceola, SD; Frank D. Fitch, Parmalee, SD; Dr. Minnie Lubker, Falls City, Nebr.; Mrs. Rose Schoenauer of Plainview, Nebr. 22 grandchildren, 1 greatgrandchild. She is also survived by her father, now 92 years old, who lives at Koshkenong, MO, and by 5 brothers and 1 sister. Funeral at the home and at the Elk City M.E. church; interment at Elk City Cemetery. Pall bearers: Jas. Mactier, Henry Gelston, Wm. Appleby, H. K. Decker, Arthur Bryant and Arthur Reed. (GOGS records: Ellen, David & 2 daughters in Elk City Cemetery.)

Daniel E. WILLIAMS died 18 Dec. 1885, aged 20y 4m, died of quincy. Services at the Presbyterian Church; burial Byer Cemetery. (GOGS: in Valley Cemetery)

Mrs. Mary QUINN, former resident of Elhorn (sic), died at her home in Omaha on 18 Sept. 1934. She was born in LaSalle, ILL, 1 June 1853, and was 81-3-18 at death. She came to Douglas Co. with her parents in 1872 and made their home on a farm near Elkhorn. She married Daniel QUINN at St. Patrick's church in Elkhorn on 15 Oct. 1876. They lived in Colorado for a few years. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Norine Busch of Howell, Nebr. and a brother, James E. Quinn of Elkhorn. Services at St. Patrick's church in Elkhorn; burial in Mt. Calvary. Pallbearers: Jesse Quinn, Preston Quinn, James Quinn, Emmett Quinn, Roland Quinn and Edwin Quinn. Detlef Henry ANDERSON, pioneer resident of Nebr. & Douglas Co., died in Omaha on 10 Sept. at age 75-10-10. He was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany on 1 Nov. 1858. He married Catherine SENDEL at Arcola, Ill on 3 Feb. 1887. Mrs. Anderson died in 1916, and 6 children also preceded him in death. He is survived by 2 sons: Henry and George Anderson, and 3 daughters, Mrs. Marie Desler, Mrs. Ella Conlon of Calif., and Mrs. Clara Gottsch. Also by a brother, Hans Anderson of Florence and 5 grandchildren. Mr. Anderson had resided for 32 years east of Bennington in Douglas county. Funeral services at home of Emil Gottsch; interment in the German cemetery north of Bennington. Pall-bearers: Columbus Wuif, John Rohwer, John Luschen, George Ohrt, Carl Kay & Frank Isham. Edward PAYNE, former Waterloo resident, died 17 Sept. 1934 at Washburn, Wis. Age 53 years. Survived by 3 daughters: Mrs. Wilbur Morris of Cozad, Nebr.; Bernita & Betty June who live in Omaha. Also survived by 3 brothers, Harry of Valley, Ray of Omaha and Fred of Wisconsin, and 2 sisters, Mrs. Rose Morris of Omaha & Mrs. E. A. Kellett of Elkhorn. Steffen BROCK, who lived 1/2 mile west of Elk City, died as a result of being trampled under the feet of his horses. Deceased was 72 years old. He and his wife came to this country from Germany and were identified with the growth of Douglas county for the last 40 years. His wife, 4 daughters and 1 son survive. Services at the Methodist Episcopal church; burial in the Elk City Cemetery. (GOGS: Steffen 28 Mar 1937-29 Aug 1909. Birth should be 1837. Wife Magdalena 26 Aug. 1837-25 Dec. 1912.)

Services for William P. (Pres) NICHOLS 82 were held 1 Aug. at the United Presbyterian Church in Fremont; burial in Elk City Cemetery. Nichols, retired farmer, died 30 July 1979 in Fremont. He was born 8 Feb. 1897 to William & Stella Murray Nichols. He married Alberta A. DORNACKER of Bennington on 22 Jan. 1931. Prior to moving to Fremont in 1956, he farmed in the Arlington, Bennington & Kennard areas. He is survived by wife, Alberta of Fremont; 1 son, Roger Nicholas of Seneca, SC, 1 daughter Mrs. George (Judy) Erdei of Omaha. 2 brothers, Harry & Gretton Nichols of Baldwin, KS, and 7 grandchildren also survive. Pallbearers: Herman Kruse, Howard Christensen, Robert Dornacker, Ivan Rulschoff, Kevin Nichols and David Gross.

Dora Marie KRUSE, 83, died at Blair on 24 March 1982. Burial in the Elk City Cemetery. Dora was born 16 June 1898 in Kennard, NE to Charles & Anna Neiman Schroeder. She married Emil Kruse, who preceded her in death in March of 1973. She is survived by 2 sons, Elvin Kruse of Bennington & Vern Kruse of Kennard. 4 grandchildren & 9 great-grandchildren also survive her. Pallbearers: Roger Bargstadt, Don Bergman, Loren Cohrs, Gene Miller, Don Kruse & Dean Reimers.

Beryl MORRIS died 30 March 1982 at Elkhorn at age 81. He was the son of James & Mary Ellen (Wyatt) Morris and was born 7 Nov. 1900 at Shelbyville, MO. He married 28 Dec. 1927 to Consuella Gelston at Elk City. To this union were born twin daughters, Marylu & Maryjo. Member of the Masonic Lodge in Valley & the Modern Woodmen in Elk City. His parents, 4 brothers & 1 sister preceded him in death. Survivors: widow, Consuello; daughters Marylu (Mrs. Elmer Wesemann) of Blair and Maryjo (Mrs. Francis LeGrand) of Waterloo; 4 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, many nieces & nephews. Pallbearers: William Appleby, Leslie Frye, Harvey Morris, Don Morris, Stan Osborne & Richard Waugh.

Services held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bennington for John H. SCHMIDT, 79, who died 13 Oct. 1983 at his home. Burial in Elk City Cemetery. John was born to Henry & Marie Meyer

Schmidt on 1 July 1904 on a farm near Bennington. He was baptized & confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church. On 19 Oct. 1938 he married Rose Helen Lamp. Rose preceded him in death on 9 Sept. 1971, as did his parents, a brother Dietrick, and a sister, Anna. He is survived by 1 daughter & son-in-law, Norma & Don Vasek of Yutan, and 1 son & daughter-in-law, Robert John & Donna Schmidt. 3 grandsons, Scott, Mike & Patrick Schmidt, 2 brothers, Otto Schmidt of Arlington & Arnold Schmidt of Bennington,1 sister, Martha Wiese of Elkhorn & nieces & nephews also survive him. Casket bearers: Arlan Schmidt, Gerald Schmidt, LaVern Schmidt, Robert Wiese, Harry Hadan & Melvin Schmidt.

In 1987, Sandra M. Thor of Entiat, WA sent information on the Union/Noyce/Thomas Cemetery in Union Pct. Douglas Co. NE:

Elmer RICHARDS bought the plot in which his parents William H. RICHARDS & Fidelia Angeline (GOULD) RICHARDS are buried (in GOGS records). In addition Ms. Thor stated William David POWELL bought a plot for his wife, Cordelia Adelina "Addie" (RICHARDS) POWELL and baby, and for a son John POWELL. Cordelia b 29 Dec. 1856 Iowa-5 Dec. 1897; no date given for baby; John d 28 Feb. 1910. The Powells in Lot 33. (No burial records for these 3.)

In 1983, Mrs. Cecile (Crocker) Doehling of Grand Island, NE wrote: my grandfather, George H. TABLER died 24 March 1906 and is buried in the Elk City Cemetery, as is George's infant son, Owen TABLER, who died 16 Oct. 1894. (Cem. assoc. records show Geo. Tabler purchased a lot on 26 Aug. 1901 & Mrs. Geo. Tabler on 26 March 1906. No tombstone for either Tabler.)

Virginia Gugin Roberts of Medford, OR in 1985 stated she believes Benjamin H. GUGIN 11 April 1889-8 Aug. 1889 is buried in the Elk City Cemetery.

Sharon Wassom, Alexandria, NE wrote in 1983 about her BESSEY families likely buried in the Elk City Cemetery. Namely Lemuel Bessy and his wife Esther A. PURCHASE BESSEY and their daughter Sarah G. who died 21 Nov. 1868. Also she believes Almira PURCHASE died 5 Sept. 1883, Jessie Purchase, Bertha Purchase, William B. Sherwood (12 May 1828/9-10 Dec. 1906) & wife Martha (?Bessey 7 June 1836-20 March 1888) are buried in Elk City. Note below data on Jessie Purchase.

Mary WILKENING GELSTON born 9 Jan. 1842 Lindhurst, Prussia died 17 June 1920 at Fullerton, NE, buried Elk City Cemetery. She came with parents, brother, and 3 sisters to American when age 11 years. Lived at Quincy, ILL until 1859, then moved to Fontanelle, NE. On 4 Sept. 1862 she married George W. GELSTON at Fontanelle, Washington Co. NE, they moved to Eagle Island, near Clarks, NE where he worked for Western Stage. In 1867 they moved to Elk City. Survivors are 7 sons: Frank (1863-1953), Henry W (1872-1954)., Samuel T. (18771970), George M. of Elk City, Charles S. of Doland, SD, Edwin H. of Oakland, CA, William R. of Quincy, IL and 2 daughters Mrs. Anna; L. Clapp of Gordon, NE and Mrs. Emma M. Rohwer (11 June 1870-2 Feb. 1944) of Fullerton, NE. Also surviving are a brother Henry Wilkening of Fontanelle, and sister Mrs. Anna Lallman of Fontanelle. Farmed 27 years s/w of Bennington, then moved to Blair area & farmed there 17 years. Daughter Loretta died 29 May 1933 (note difference), brother George, 2 sisters, Hermine (Mrs. Elmer Haver) & Henrietta (Mrs. G. C. Becker) & husband John preceded her in death. Survivors Fed & Leon; sisters Margaret Kempcke of Fremont & Anna Newhouse of Bellevue; 5 grandchildren John, Lee, Joane & Randall Ehiers & Kristy Murphy; 3 great grandchildren, Matt & Jill Ehiers & Billy Murphy. Henry KRUSE died 21 Jan. 1983 at Phoenix, AZ, age 84. Services at St. John's Luth. Church in Bennington, NE. Bertha L. RAMSER GLENDENING d 20 Feb. 1982 in Fremont, age 94. Born 22 Sept. 1887 in Washington Co. to Fred & Hattie Murley RAMSER. George C. RAMSER d 25 June 1982 at Omaha, age 79, retired farmer of Bennington. Born 15 July 1902 at Arlington. Vet of WW II, U.S. Navy. Survivors: Mildred Ramser 2 nieces & 2 nephews (see Bertha above). Preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters & 1 brother.

Graduated Valley High School; member of Elk City Meth. E. Church. Married Alice Marie Whitney on 23 Sept. 1925 at home of the bride across the Elkhorn River from his own home. They had 5 children: Murial Elaine, Richard Warren, Harlan Whitney, Marilyn Joyce & Marjorie Emma. Donald farmed as did his father. A 50 year Mason. His parents & one sister, Marie, preceded him in death. Survivors: wife, Alice, children, Elaine (Mrs. Burt Jung) of Yutan, Richard of Valley, Harlan of Fremont, Marilyn (Mrs. Jim Cunningham) of Fremont, Marjorie (Mrs. Myron Plambeck) of Lyons, 16 granchildren, 16 great grandchildren & brother Kenneth of Phoenix and others.

DUST TO DUST continued from pg 125

DIXON COUNTY

IONIA--This was once a flourishing town. It was situated on the bottom land of the Missouri River, but was moved back up on the bluffs on account of the washing away of the town site by the river. The name was derived from lonia, Greece. The first settlers arrived in 1857. In 1 870 a large two story frame hotel was erected, and by 1872 the town was at the height of its prosperity. It contained one general store, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, a grist mill, and about one hundred inhabitants. Besides the inroads of the Missouri River, the high price of town lots prevented [onia from growing, and by 1882 most of the population had scattered elsewhere and only a few people and businesses remained.

LOGAN GROVE--This was primarily a post office established in 1877 and located in Clark precinct in the western part of the county. The first settlement in the vicinity was in 1871. A schoolhouse was built here in 1872.

SILVER RIDGE--This was primarily a post office located five miles west of Ponca. It was settled first in 1858 and a post office was established in 1877. Besides this there was a creamery and also Silver Ridge Seminary, opened in 1870. educating both men and women.
