CASS COUNTY TOWNS continued

ROCK BLUFF--Rock Bluff was organized in 1856. A scattered settlement adjacent to the town was organized as North Rock Bluff in 1857. In 1858 the towns consolidated. A Methodist church was erected in 1874. A frame mill was constructed and later used as a grain warehouse. There were also two general stores, a blacksmith shop, and a post office. Rock Bluff was a prosperous and formidable rival for Plattsmouth for twelve years until Plattsmouth got the railroad, then Rock Bluff declined. The peak of population was 150 in the 1880 census. The first highschool in the county was erected in 1870, a two-story brick building. In 1937 the town still had Its public square and a few streets visible. Rock Bluff was one of the leading points for equipping freighters for treks across the plains. Also, Naomi Institute was established and operated here for several years.

CASS COUNTY TOWNS continued

MT. PLEASANT--This town was organized in 1856 and incorporated in 1861. The post office was established in 1858. Mt. Pleasant was situated In the geographical center of Cass County at the intersection of the territorial road leading from Nebraska City to Omaha with the road leading from Kanosha to Chester, on Salt Creek, and Fort Kearny. By 1856 a saw mill and grist mill were in operation on the Weeping Water and a steam flour mill was under construction. At one time there were plans for the establishment of Western University in Mt. Pleasant.

SUNLIGHT--Sunlight was located in the southwest part of the county. A paper town of the same name was laid out in 1857, but no settlement sufficient to constitute a village was ever made, though in 1882 there was a store in connection with the post office and a blacksmith shop.
