DO YOU HAVE A HUGUENOT ANCESTOR?

The term Huguenot is used to refer to French Protestants who were in danger of persecution for their religious beliefs during the years 1535 to 1787. A majority of Huguenots were merchants, master craftsmen, or skilled artisans living in towns scattered throughout France. Because they did not belong to the church of the rulers of France, the Catholic Church which was the recognized state church, they were considered heretics.

Although for periods of time they were allowed to live in relative peace, at other times they were severely persecuted. Two dates stand out as especially difficult ones for the Huguenots - The Saint Bartholomew Day Massacre in 1572 and The Revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685. Thousands of Huguenots were forced to flee to nearby Protestant countries where the Swiss, the Dutch, the Germans, and the English welcomed them.

Many would ultimately come to America to live in settlements of their adopted European countrymen or, less frequently, in predominately Huguenot communities. Huguenots came with the earliest immigrants to the Plymouth colony in Massachusetts and to New Amsterdam. In 1670 Huguenots began settling Salem, Massachusetts, New Platz, New York and Port Royal, South Carolina. Manakintown, Virginia was settled by Huguenots in 1681. A large number of refugees came to Boston from France and the Antilles in 1685. New Oxford, Massachusetts was founded by Huguenots from London in 1687 and New Rochelle, New York was founded by other Huguenot immigrants in 1688. When Germantown, Pennsylvania was settled by Mennonites from Germany in 1683, Huguenots were among them. Charlestown, South Carolina was a favored place for Huguenots to settle. Thousands of Huguenots continued to immigrate to America during the eighteenth century.

Identifying a Huguenot ancestor may be a difficult task for surnames were often changed to agree with the meaning or spelling of similar surnames of the adopted country. Huguenots

were often valued members of their communities because of their special skills as craftsmen and artisans. As a group they rather quickly assimilated into the other Protestant groups with which they associated. Many of them assumed prominent leadership roles in their communities.

The Huguenot Society of Nebraska has donated a large collection of books to assist genealogists in tracing their Huguenot ancestry. These books are located at the Union College Library in southeast Lincoln.

If you have a Huguenot ancestor, you may be interested in joining the Huguenot Society of Nebraska. For membership qualifications you may write to Ruth Anna Hicks, 6703 Holdrege. Lincoln, NE 68505.
