(1) Aug. 1870: Governor David BUTLER issued proclamation setting
boundaries of new county of Cheyenne, designating Sidney as
county seat and officers were appointed.
(2) Oct. 8, 1871: Cheyenne County's first election.
(3) While Sheriff, McCARTY was a saloon owner, gambler,
politician and cattleman; in 1880, it was rumored that he
was the leader of Sidney's underworld and the main suspect
in the 1880 Gold Bullion Robbery in Sidney.
(4) Febr. 22, 1930: Sheriff James N. NELSON shot and killed.
(5) Febr. 25, 1930: Deputy Sheriff W.W. (Bill) SCHULZ appointed
Sheriff.

This description of Jenkins Mills is taken from the paper:
"Eighteen months ago there was not a house where this flourishing place now stands. Its business now is equal to that of any other point on the frontier. It contains one large four story flouring mill, owned by D.G. Jenkins. This mill will be in running order by the first of October next, one saw mill, one shingle factory, one large general store, one printing office, one post office, two lawyers, one real estate office (that of Merrill & Kelley), one school house, one hotel (the Frontier House) Jas Fraizer proprietor, two blacksmiths. Parties are in town making preparations for putting up a large wagon manufactory, the machinery driven by water. We feel confident that this is to be the metropolis of northwestern Kansas, and southwestern Nebraska.
