My dear Sir
ݬݬݬݬ
Your letter was received some weeks since I thank you for answering
my letter so soon. I have been very busy up here building houses and stores
for the past few months, I did all the inside work on a large Hotel building
besides building a dwelling and an addition to a Store, at present I am building
an addition to the Store of E L MARSTON which is a branch of Whitney Clark & Co
House of Omaha. Mr. CLARK was up here last Sunday and attended Church Rev Mr
GOODALE preaching. Mr. CLARK liked our town and people very much and think
Silver Creek will make quite a town We had a Sunday School picnic a few weeks
ago which was a grand success The drive from the Church to the picnic grounds
with our new banners floating in the breese looked quite imposing. At the Church
Rev Henry SHAW opened the proceedings with the usual exercises and

Thaddeus J. or T.J. Foley was an early merchant in North Platte. The 1920 history of Lincoln County which was compiled by Bare and McDonald does not contain a biographical sketch on him and barely mentions him in one place. According to information gleaned by Nellie Snyder Yost Lydic, late author and historian of Lincoln County, Foley operated a big general store in North Platte known as Foley & Senter. William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody attended a elegant reception in his honor on 21 October 1886 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Foley. They were apprently (sic) very socially prominent in North Platte. Foley and Cody were apparently also good friends. It is known that Foley had ranch interests north of Lincoln County.
Taken from a clipping from a North Platte, Lincoln County, Nebraska
newspaper dated 24 August 1878.
Marriage Notices
FOLEYSMILEY At the
home of the bride's Mother, Wednesday, August 14th, 1878 by Rev. Leroy
F Baker, Mr. Thaddeus J. Foley of North Platte, Nebraska to Miss Jennie
Smiley of Smiley, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. Rev. Baker was
Rector of Grace Church, Great Bend.
The above couple will receive the congratulations of their many friends on their return. The bride is well known in social life in North Platte, as she was in our city last winter visiting her sister, Mrs. H.N. Nichols. Mr. Foley has been in Western Nebraska for several years, and is known as one of the leading merchants of the west.
Same newspaper there is a clipping on the death of Elizabeth Van Doran. In North Platte, Nebraska on Monday, August 19, 1878 Elizabeth, wife of H.M. Van Doran, aged 47 years, 3 months and 14 days. The lady was well and favorably known in this community. She leaves many friends who deeply sympathize with the afflicted family. A husband, two sons and a grand child mourn their lost. The funeral took place on the 20th.
