The following letter was written by Thomas L. PHILLIPS to his brother-in-law Nimrod FLICK in Armstrong County Pennsylvania. The property of Mr. PHILLIPS was actually in Seward County but just on the line, so his closest post office was probably Crouse in Lancaster County. He was in the 1880 census in Seward County. The spelling is as it was in the letter.

Dr Sir
I sit down this afterrnoon to wright you a fieu lines to let you no how we ar. We ar all well at presant hoping that you ar all well. I received a letter from Alfred and was very glad to here from them. He said that it raind a good deal there. It has not raind here since I came here as much as to lay the dust but it is neded now. We ar looking for it. I have got ten acres of wheet and fifteen acres of oats sowd and ten acres plowd for come and I have twenty five acres to plow yet for corn. This is a very late spring here. Most of the wheat fields are green and that was sowd early and I have got some fruit trees and grape vines set out. Everything loocks green. The gras is groing. If the grass was tame in stead of wild grass it woold be larger. This grass makes nice hay but it can't be cut till September. Some days I like this country very well and some days I don't like it a tall. That is some some days when the wind is travling at the rate of forty miles anouhr and the fine sand is flying that you cant see a mile. But it is worse this spring than it ever was. Noing to be that is on acount of no rain. The plowing is nice and easy. I put my twenty five acres in a eleven days and a half. The folks is out there ar dropping off one by one. Axtthrose TAYLOR died a too weeks ago. He was well and harty when I left him on Sunday. Before I left on Tuesday little did I
