NEBRASKA CITY began in 1846 when the original Fort Kearny, a blockhouse, was built to serve as a fort. Before changing the name, the first postoffice was known as Table Creek. Nebraska City served as a gateway to the west and its courthouse is the oldest public building in Nebraska. Arbor Lodge State Park, located at the edge of town, was the home of J. Sterling Morton who served as Secretary of Agriculture in the 1890's as was the founder of Arbor Day.
