INDEX TO DEATH NOTICES IN THE ARNOLD SENTINEL, ARNOLD, CUSTER COUNTY, NE 1914--1929
This is intended to be an aid to family researchers who had, at one time or another, family members living in Arnold, NE. Small town newspapers are valuable research tools, as they often carry complete obituaries, whereas larger city newspapers do not. They also carry obituaries for those no longer living in the community and relatives who have never lived there.
Many of the notations I have made are merely "items", as there was no obit. Others are "stories", not informative enough for an obit. On occasion, the only thing I found was an estate or Probate notice. Still others are noted only by a Lodge Resolution. Sometimes a "Card of Thanks" was the only way I had of knowing of a death. The date of the newspaper in which the item ran will give researchers some idea as to when the death occurred. All Nebraska deaths since 1904 are recorded at Vital Statistics in Lincoln, Ne. The one exception would be Estate Settlements, which often took years to complete. The county in which the Estate was probated would be the wiser choice for acquiring an accurate date.
There my be many who died during these years, whose names you will not find in this index.
The newspapers on microfilm at The Nebraska State Historical Society are rather irratic between 1914 and 1919. The name you are seeking may have been in a "missing issue". Additionally, I did not record the death of anyone whose name was not given (ex: Mrs. Hickenbottom's father passed away .... ).
If an obituary was printed, an "O" will appear in the second column. An obit was the. number one priority in this index. This does not preclude other notices, and it would be advisable to scan the newspapers before and after the date for other items. An "S" indicates a story concerning the death, but no obit. An "I" indicates an item, (ex: Mr. & Mrs. Soandso attended the funeral of Mrs. Soandso's brother, Horace Suchandsuch, Thursday). Estate, or Probate notices, will be indicated by an "E". A "C" will denote a Card of Thanks only. "L" indicates a Lodge Resolution only.
Column three gives the day, month & year the article appeared. The year is a two digit number, 19 being omitted. This date is NOT the date of death. Blanks indicate the married name is cross-indexed.
..... and finally, I apologize for any errors. Please notify me of any.
In loving memory of my father, Clarence C. CUNNINGHAM, who in 1954 realized the value of an index of this sort and began keeping a list of the deaths listed in the Sentinel.
