BOOK REVIEW
PUBLISHED SOURCES ON TERRITORIAL NEBRASKA, An Essay and Bibliography by John Browning White. Published by the Nebraska State Historical Society in 1956. Indexed. 261 pages. The book tells of Territorial newspapers, maps which have been made, it basically covers the years 1854-1867.
Attention is directed to the mixed nature of some of the items in the bibliography. The arrangement of the bibliography in each of the chapters is alphabetical under the name of the author, or the originator, as in the case of an organization or agency of govornnent (sic). This source could lead to much good local history and an insight to persons or organizations etc.
Much of the material has been published by the Nebraska State Historical Society. It includes the names of many authors and perhaps others. If your ancestor had anything to do with Nebraska history you might want to make a quick check of the index to see if he is included in this work.
Most of the works mentioned are available at the State Historical Society.

ROMAN CATHOLICS ON THE FRONTIER: SOUTHWEST NEBRASKA
Roman Catholic priests were not common on the Nebraska frontier. For scattered families, the nearest priest might be two or three counties away. Missionary priests traveled to remote areas, on occasion, but, to be married, many couples went to the priest. For this reason many Roman Catholic couples were married in Red Willow County, where there was a full-time priest. The couples came from Hitchcock. Dundy, Chase, Hayes and Frontier counties. So, if you can't find the marriage records you need, you might try looking for them in the Red Willow County judge's office. This same situation probably occurs in other parts of the state, so learn where the nearest full-time priest was in the area. Also, there was no Roman Catholic cemetery at Trenton, Hitchcock County, so many of the early Catholic burials took place in McCook. To show how complicated things could be:
RACINE-ROACH
"John ROACH and Bertha RACINE came to Trenton, (Hitchcock County,) Tuesday, expecting to be married by Rev. J. J. LOUGHRAN, who was to be here that day to hold service. The Rev. gentleman, however, failed to arrive. Nothing daunted, the young people went to McCook, Wednesday morning, and then to Benkelman (Dundy County) where the priest had another appointment, and were married by him on Thursday. They returned to Trenton on No. 150, and were guests of the Commercial until their return home Friday morning. Father LOUGHRAN was filling an appointment at Minden and owing to the introduction of the tn-weekly passenger-freight service he could not get a train to come here, thus disappointing his congregation, many of whom had come for miles, It is not often that people have to go on a wedding tour before they are married, but as Billy Shakespeare used to say, "All's well that ends well." TRENTON REPUBLICAN, Fri., 8 July 1904.

1867 ---NEBRASKA--- 1967
My Dear Patricia, Phyllis and Pamla: Today our Native State of "Nebraska" is One Hundred years old: I am writing this to remind you that you have far more than "passing interest in the early pioneers of Hall County, Nebraska, since your Great Grandfather, William J. BURGER, aged 20 yrs and your Great Grandmother, Martha Ann CREASON, aged 19 yrs were married in Glenwood, IA, Thanksigiving (sic) Day, November 24, 1864.
Grandfather said: "After one week I left wife in Plattsmouth with my parents and I started to homestead a claim off the Platte River south of a small settlement called Grand Island." I planned to return for wife but winter set in early so I got lumber and spent the winter alone

building a ranch I called Junctionville." In the spring I went to bring wife:"
The following verse I wrote for you to know something of their early life stories with the Indians, Blizzards, Covered wagons, Grasshoppers, Buffalo, Mormans! Always be proud of our "Pioneers"! Mrs. (C.A.) Vinta Burger Harrell PENTON.
One Hundred years ago: |
Were strong, brave, staunch and true, |
When our sturdy pioneer prodded |
For there was no place like Nebraska, |
The Oxen and the Steer |
One hundred years ago! |
Mile on mile, without fear |
|
Forded the rivers, trails they trod |
There is no place like Nebraskas |
Built homes of dirt and grassy sod. |
One Hundred years of Pioneers! |
Wandering Indians when on raid |
Hard Work, toil and bitter tears, |
They were there with help and aid. |
They followed thro year after year |
Until the soil began to unfold |
|
They planted crops and tilled the soil |
Treasures and riches far greater than gold. |
Often were stripped by grasshoppers, |
When the old stage coach on the lonely plain |
Little rain, hot winds or hail |
Gave way to the chug, chug of the railroad train |
Or trampled by great hears of buffalo. |
From the clumsy Oxen to the fastest jet, |
Winter covered the plains with ice and snow, |
All this we'll never, never forget, |
Great Blizzards roared thro days and nights |
For there's no place like Nebraskas |
This we know for those who stayed to fight |
First One Hundred Years! |

Letters written by Lucy Bivins USHER
Letter to Helen GRANNIS from Lucy USHER, dated Plattsmouth, Ne, 23 Nov. 1873
Dear Niece. Your welcome letter came to hand last evening, glad to hear from you but sorry to learn that brother Will has lost one of his eyes, well I am not blind but I can't see to do any thing with out specks. I think you have winter early, here where we live they can plow just as well as though it was summer we have had some very cold weather but the most of the time it has been warm and pleasant we have had a very dry fall so far. There has been considerable ice coming down Platte River but there was none in the Missouri above Platte. The wind as a general thing blows very hard here in the Spring and fall and winter that is what makes it so cold, here to day is nice and pleasant perhaps tomorrow will be cold and windy. About four weeks ago we had about a half an inch of Snow but there is never any Sleighing here. I am glad to hear of old friends but I suppose they have forgotten me. Thank you for the seeds they are a native of Iowa. I have a lot of then planted. I will send you some morning glory seeds I got them of a woman that cane from Michigan I never saw any like them before, if I ever got money enough ahead I will get some pictures taken and I'll send one to you. I read in the Christian Standard of a man named A. B. CRANNIS living in Hebron Thayer Co. Neb. I think he is a relative of yours. The last letter from sister Abb said all were well. Today your Aunt Martha McCANON is 34 years old. I have not heard from her in a long time. My health is not very good I have a bad caugh all the time but I keep around and help do my work, the rest of the family are well as usual. Mary Ellen was married the 6 of Nov. 1873. Well Jack and his Children have come so I will stop for the present. Well now supper over and the folks all gone to meeting but myself and Frank, he is reading while I am writing. I would like to see you all, brother Will do you think of coming west ever, if you do come and see us now don't wait till next year before you write again. I had begun to think you did not care to hear from me, let us try to live so that we may meet in the sweet field of Eden where we shall be forever with the Lord blessed be God his promises are sure our love to one and all. Answer soon as ever your Aunt Lucy.

To Miss Hellen GRANNIS Onoville, N. Y. from Mrs. Lucy USHER, Framers Valley, Hamilton Co. NE
dated October 1, 1874
Dear Niece Hellen, You think that your Aunt has forgot you by this time. I have neglected writing a long time. I received your letter in a few days after it was wrote but I was sick a bed at that time, and we have been moving since then we are now living in Hamilton Co., Neb. We have got a good 80 acres of prarie but no timber nor water we have to draw water for stock and every thing out of a well ninety foot deep.
We did not have any corn this year for the grasshopers destroyed all the corn and about every thing else in this part of the country except wheat, oats, and barley and rey it will be hard times here this winter. How is crops where you live? I have not heard from mother since in August they were all well then. Thank you for the picture you sent me but you did not tell me who it was but I supposed it was Hellen Grannis it is a very pretty picture if I can I will get mine taken and send it to you. Did you hear that uncle Chancy BIVINS was dead? He died last April with dropsey of the heart. Father has no relative living now except his own family not as he knows of. The weather here now is pleasant, we had one big frost last month. I will have to close for this is the third sheet of paper that I have filled up this afternoon and I want to write to Mary Ellen yet tonight so I will close. Our love to all Pa and Ma especialy. Write again soon and direct to Farmers Valley, Hamilton Co., Neb. So now good night from your Aunt Lucy Usher.
