From files at the NE State Hist. Society, Lincoln.
Letter dated 4 Nov. 1955 to Mr. LYNCH, Lynch Drug, Thedford,
NE (Thomas Co.) From Iva M. (Mrs. Frank) GLIDDEN
Mrs. GLIDDEN states "I wish you had asked for this (information) while Frank was living. We came to the hills in Oct. 1911, a few families. A bachelor, Charles DOWNS lived 1 1/2 mi. east of us. 2 families south - but. they were in Logan Co. 1 family was PATTERSONS, the other DAVIDSONS. Franks bro. Ray, homesteaded at the same time we did, also an aunt, Mr. S. DIMICK. In 1913, I believe, Sam SCOTT & family settled 1 1/2 mi west of us. Also the RUNYON families came in 1912. Carl NEUMAN family moved to the hills, I believe, in 1913 or 14, they lived right on the Dismal river. Anna HORA taught the first school we had. There were 5 pupils from the SCOTT & NEUMANN families. School held in my aunt's house. She failed to appear for school one morning after very cold weather and a lot of snow, as Mr. NEUMANN was hunting up the river he found the tracks of Miss HORA's horse and a huge hole in the ice. The remains of her body was found a yr or so later. Voting place was in our home. After Frank's bro. Ray, left we moved onto his place in 1915 & I believe that was where we voted. The Lorel WELLS family lived on the Dismal river about 4 mil. east of us, I can't remember the first names of the RUNYONS, there were several of them, 3 girls & 2 sons, all of voting age, except the youngest son. They had 4 homesteads. There was a George & a Clara RUNYON but I can't think of others. They lived there 4 or 5 yrs. The pars. were alive at that time.
Our family was born & grew to high school age in the hills.
Some of the early settlers sold their homesteads as soon as they 'proved up'. Charles DOWNS & Sam SCOTT left in 1916. The RUNYON left, however, they didn't sell their land. Carl NEUMANN left, but came back. Mr. WELLS sold out & left. We were the only homesteads left.
