From Pawnee City Centennial 1857-1957
HISTORY OF PAWNEE CITY
Legend tells us that the town of Pawnee City, NE is on the exact sport (sic)where the largest village of the Pawnee Indians was located. The name Pawnee was supposedly dirived (sic) from the word pony.
Court House--On Nov 4, 1856 after two elections had been held the site was selected to be the county seat of Pawnee County and named Pawnee City. At that time the following were elected as the first county officials.
Probate Judge--H. G. LORE County Commissioners--John C. PEAVY, E. W. FOWLER amd (sic) Joseph FRIES;
Sheriff--Rufus ABBOTT Treas. W. B. ARNETT,
who did not qualify so Judge Christian BOBST was appointed in his place;
County
Clerk, G. C. THALLIMER: Superintendent of the Common School, Rezin BALL;
Surveyer, John J. LEBO;
Register, William S. LOWE; Justice of the Peace,
C. HUNTLEY; H. BILLINGS, A. A. JORDAN. J. ADAMS.
The court house was started in 1857 and by 1860 had progressed no further than the erection of a frame which stood until 1860 when a severe windstorm leveled it to the ground. In 1878 the court house was rebuilt. This building was replace (sic) in 1911 when the present building was constructed.
Hospital--Prior to 1905 the physicians of Pawnee City were without hospital facilities of any kind. On May 26, 1906 Doctors A.B. ANDERSON, W.T. JOHNSON, W. R. BOYER and J.W. BULLARD organized the Pawnee County Hospital Association. When the first rooms became inadequate Mrs. James O'LOUGHLIN and Miss Emmeline BALDRIDGE operated a house as a hospital until 1911. In Nov. 1913 the Hospital Association was reorganized with Dr. J.C. WADDELL replacing Dr. ANDERSON, who had retired and Dr. BROOKS replacing Dr. BULLARD, who had died. This continued as the hospital until Nov. 1916 when Dr. BOYER purchased the Shannon Hotel and remodeled it into a general hospital, which operated until June 1947 when the new Pawnee County Memorial hospital was opened.
Schools--The first school was conducted in 1859 by Dr. A.S. STEWART. The second term was held in 1860 by a Mr. BRADWAY. In 1863 the first public school building was built. At the beginning of the school year of 1896, Mrs. POTTER had 61 beginners. Mrs. POTTER taught the first grade for 25 years.
At the present time there are on the staff two teachers who have been recognized for completing 25 years of service in the school. Miss Alice BRACKETT, thrid (sic) grade teacher, was honored in 1949 and Mr. H. A. SCHREPEL, band director in 1956.
