Homesteading in Jackson Township - Hall County (continued)
Near where the DICKINSON's and DUBB'S lived a Mr. RUSSELL had laid claim to land and the balance of the section was not settled until Chas. J. SODERSTROM came onto the Southwest quarter in 1882. Erland CAROLSON and a Mr. PETERSON finished out the section about the same time. PETERSON sold out in 1888 to S. G. McCLURKIN who had coma over from Ireland. The year Sam McCLURKIN left Ireland for the U. S., some of his brothers migrated to Australia.
Some of the families coming by 1890 were: Fred BARKER, Mr. SOLTERS, Mr. SPAHN, Mike HANNON, John MOSSER, Tom CONNERS, and George HAUKE. Mary EWING arrived in 1872, a widow with nine children. Joe SMITH, John MOORE, wm. (sic) RYAN, and Bill COX added to the settlement.
One of the first school teachers was Sallia BARRIER who received $90 for a total of 60 teaching days. Forty children attended the first year from families named: EWING, HORTH, HOYT, RYAN, TEE and EVERETT. First teacher for Dis. #32 was George K. PECK. His wages for 60 teaching days was $31.00 a month. The following year Helen OWING taught and received $22.50 per month.
Board members were James EWING, John FOX, and A. D. FURROWS. Three of the families responsible for helping to establish the schools in the community were DUBBS, DICKINSON & CURRY.
During the Blizzard of 12 January 1888, the teacher at Dist. #32 was Anne McNIEL, some of the children attending were: DICKINSON girls, Alma, 12, Ada, 10, Nellie, 9. Also, Jessie, age 11, son of George FRAZELL. That day Nathaniel DICKINSON and the hired man, Charlie PARLIMENT, took a load of wheat to the mill in Wood River.
The first regular minister at Northfield church was the Rev. Wm. ARNOLD, who lived in Palmer, NE, but drove to the Northfield church every other week by horse and buggy. After the Rev. ARNOLD, a woman, Jenmie STARY, was the minister. Her home was in St. Paul and she too came every other week. She was followed by the Rev. PICKETT, who came from Hastings. The Rev. PICKETT united in marriage during his stay, Ada DICKINSON and Frank DORITY, 27 February 1908. The Rev. Will BREWER followed by the Revs. MILLER and ZIMMERMAN. A Miss OUTNEY conducted revival meetings. Only the generous donations of Nathaniel DICKINSON, George FRAZELL, John DEAN and others were the bills paid and the meager salary of the minister met.
The raising of livestock was started to supplement the farmers' income. Starting this venture was Bill DUBBS followed by Miles LYONS, Wm. RYAN and others.

BELLEVUE
COLLEGE - 1880 - 1919 (Sarpy County)
Published by Hastings College, Hastings, Nebraska, 19 October 1962
Bellevue College was organized on October 16, 1880. First classes did not start until three years later. The first material signs that a college was started were evident on July 4, 1883 when the cornerstone was laid for Clarke Hall. College classes opened on September 10, 1883; twenty six students met at the Bellevue Presbyterian Church for opening exercises. Classes were held in near-by residences, where the three minister-teachers taught. They were the Rev. W. J. BOLLMAN, temporary President: The Rev. D. N. DES ISLETS, secretary of the faculty; and the Rev. Francis S. BLAYNEY.
Of the twenty-six students, seven were from the village itself. The others, from Osceola, Omaha, Waterloo, Lincoln, Ashland, Plattemouths, St. Edward, Papillion, Oakdale, Seward and as far away as McCook.
During these first two years, all students were classified as academy pupils. It was not until the beginning of the third year that any registered for work in the college department. Of the total enrollment of fifty-eight that year, eight were registered as college freshmen. Four years later on June 13, 1899, three of this group comprised the first graduating class from Bellevue College.
The First World War interrupted the program of Bellevue and depleted its personnel. At the request of the Bellevue alumni, the scholastic records and credits of former Bellevue students were transferred to Hastings Collage in 1934, and the degrees of those who had graduated from Bellevue College and Bellewue Normal College were validated by Hastings College, Hastings, Nebraska. Below is a list of graduates of Bellevue College
