The old LaPorte cemetery, located six miles southeast of Wayne, is closely connected with the early history of the county. The site for the burial ground was given to the community by Wilson DURIN from his own estate, following the accidental death of his son, Charles DURIN, who was killed by a falling tree February 16, 1871. Charles DURIN was 20 years of age at his death. The plot was deeded to three trustees, R.H. SKILES, Joseph AGLER and W.A. HUNTER, the same year.
The second tragic death occurred in November of 1871, when Wm. HUNTER was frozen to death in one of the terrible blizzards quite common in the early days, when the country was unprotected by trees. Wm. HUNTER was a Civil War veteran, having served in Co. I. 4th Illinois Cavalry, the full four years of the war. He was 42 years old at the time of his death. Lee HUNTER was the second Civil War veteran to be buried there.
The third death in the community in 1871 was that of the RICHARDSON baby who died at the age of 11 months.
In the spring of 1873 there were two deaths occurring in April. Will, son of A.M. and M.E. SCOTT, died April 6, 1873. The spirit of the pioneer can be no better shown than by quoting the inscription from the humble little stone where the child is buried: "Sleep on, sweet babe, and take thy rest, God called thee home, He thought it best."
Caroline, wife of Caleb MINER, died April 30, 1873.
John ENGLERT, husband of Emeline ENGLERT, died March of 1876, aged 65 yr 5 mo 9 da. Mrs. ENGLERT is buried in Oregon.
Wilson DURIN, the founder of the LaPorte cemetery, was the next. He died in November of 1876.
Again in 1878, two terrible deaths occurred in the DURIN family when Mrs Betsy DURIN and daughter, Anne M. DURIN were burned to death in the prairie fire which swept the country in the fall of that year. Mrs. DURIN was age 51 years and Anne was aged 11 years
A son Allan DURIN was accidentally killed by lightning about this time, but the exact date of death could not be found. Allan DURIN is buried at Holdrege, where he had been working at the time of his death.
The next death occurred in the family of William and Harriett TOWNSEND, who then resided on the farm now owned by Wm. GILDERSLEEVE. An adopted daughter, Alice M. died November 6, 1879, at the age of 3. The TOWNSEND family remained only a short time afterward, removing to their old home in Iowa.
Later in the year of 1879, Minne Belle, daughter of Enoch and Rebecca HUNTER, died of diphteria. The child was age 1 yr. A second daughter, Patience Eliza, died in 1881 at the age of 10.
In 1882, the second death from diptheria occurred. Clarence E., son of W.H. and M.A. HUNT died at 6 years.
A baby born to R.H. and Mary SKILES died January 5. 1882. On February 13, Lina, wife of I.0. RICHARDSON, died about one month after the death of the SKILES baby. Mrs. RICHARDSON was age 36 years.
Harry SKILES died just one year after the death of his brother. Residents of Wayne will remember the double funeral of Mr & Mrs SKILES.
George HUNTER, grandfather of W.W. HUNTER of Wayne, died in July of 1888.
Mrs. Anne MILLER, sister of Mrs W.A. HUNTER of Wayne, died in the

(continued LaPorte Cemetery Records History)spring of 1890. Mrs Eleanora MILLER, also a sister of Mrs HUNTER, is buried in the same lot.
Jacob, born to B.F. and G.E. COOPER, January 10, 1893, died in 1893, in the month of August.
The last interment to be made in the old LaPorte cemetery was for Enoch HUNTER in 1910. Mr. HUNTER had been county judge for 13 years prior to his death.
An old soldier of the War of 1812, "Grandpa" ALLEN, is also buried there, but the exact date of his death and his age are not known. He came west after being mustered out of the service and took up his title to a land grant in Paw Paw Grove, Illinois. Those who knew Nathaniel ALLEN will remember his recital of his trip west, and of his aversion to the "mud flats", where Chicago now stands.
Three children of Mr. and Mrs W.A. HUNTER, "Baby", Ella and Scott, are buried in the old LaPorte cemetery.
Stones were not erected in many instances because of the expense and the difficulty of taking them across country from Sioux City, Norfolk and West Point, which places were the nearest handling them. Old settlers remember a number of graves unmarked, and are able to give the surnames of those buried there, but time has erased dates and given names even from their active minds.
While W.A. HUNTER lived in the community, he expended every effort to keep the old cemetery up, but after his departure, it received little care until 1927 when the American Legion undertook the task of clearing the spot to preserve this old burial ground as a Wayne County memorial to these old settlers who helped make this land what it is today.
