LODGE POLE TIMES: Lodge
Pole, Cheyenne County, Nebraska, Wednesday, April 1 1885, as copied from the
STATE JOURNAL:
The rapid growth of Nebraska is evidenced that for 36 hours, beginning
at 7 o'clock Thursday morning, 109 carloads of immigrant movablas passed
through this city (Lincoln) on the B&M, billed for Nebraska towns.
Let this move continue and this state will round the million mile post
before the census of 1890.

Taken from: "OUR HERITAGE in the KILGORE AREA" compiled by Orthello (VAN WINKLE) KUDELKA, Cherry County.
The KILGORE Cemetery was begun in
December 1894, when Stephen G. DAVIS wanted a place to bury his wife, Mary.
At that time there was no cemetery. Simpson KILGORE had been buried West of
Kilgore at the foot of the hills, along, with three others, but no markers
bearing their names were ever placed at the graves. Mrs. Ellen ROTHLEUTNER
and Henry FOX brought this to our attention. Thanks to our senior citizens!
Fred GRABE owned the land where Mr.
DAVIS wanted to bury his wife, it was a part of the GRABE homestead. An agreement
was reached and Mary DAVIS, Celia SEGAR and Stanley ROTHLEUTNER's grandmother,
were laid to rest on the little hill over looking the village of Georgia. Mr.
GRABE decided the acreage in the present cemetery should not be included whenever
the land was sold.
Severel years ego, a Cemetery Fund
was begun towards making improvements. A large fill on the southwest side was
put in and a new fence was erected along the west side of the cemetery. In
1974, after the death of Irene GRANTHAM HAND, the family requested memorials
be given toward a watering system for the Kilgore Cemetery. After Glen HAND's
death, February 1, 1976, the memorials were sufficient to get the project underway.
Along with contributions by many people, a sprinkling system was installed.
Harold RAUER has bean active in helping and promoting this cemetery project,
and volunteered his service free as a caretaker for the first year. He
has attempted to get markers set to establish the different lots. Many
markers are without names, it is hoped with the help of anyone who can
give information concerning them will give it to the Cemetery Board.
Other improvements are planned to make our cemetery as attractive as
those in the neighboring towns.
Kilgore Cemetery is located at the west side of Kilgore and south of Highway 20, Kilgore, Cherry County, Nebraska, Section 10, Township 34, Range 31.
Recorded 18 June 1976, by Ruth F. HARMS, Valentine, Nebraska 69201.
