THE FIRST GENERATION
The William and Marie Berens Sporleder Family
Carl Friedreich William Sporleder was born June 8, 1848, in Dassel, Einbeck, Prowing, Hanover, Germany. He was commonly referred to as William or Will. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith while still living in Germany. Will migrated to the United States in 1866 at the age of eighteen. He initially settled in the Chicago area and lived with his uncle where he was employed in a machine shop.
Johanna Dorothea Berens was born January 2, 1854, at Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. She came to the United States with her parents at the age of three where she was schooled and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She was commonly referred to as Marie.
Will subsequently moved to Joliet, Illinois and then Mokena, Illinois. Will and Marie were married June 19, 1872. The various news articles published at the time of their respective deaths give difference Illinois locations for their marriage; McKinney, Joliet, and Mokena. They later moved to Carroll County, Iowa where they purchased a farm. In 1881, they moved to Pierce, Nebraska where they purchased a farm that was their home for 27 years until 1908. They retired in the community of Pierce. Ten children were born to the marriage including sons Fred, John, William Henry, and Henry, as well as daughters Lena, Louise, Mary Sophia, Emma, Freda, and Ella.
Marie died November 18, 1927, at the age of 73. She had been in poor health for three years prior to her death. Will died in Pierce in 1935 at the age of 87. They are buried in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery east of Pierce. At the time of his death, the local newspaper provided this revere description:
Deceased was possessed of that rugged character and spirit that made up the pioneers who developed a new country. He came here in 1881 and experienced the rigors and hardships of those early years. He was progressive and took a great interest in the affairs of state and community. He was loved for his friendliness and interest in his neighbor and fellow man. He was a Christian all of his life, being a member of the Lutheran faith. He was the oldest member of the Zion Lutheran Church at Pierce and faithful attendant at all services of that congregation.
As noted, Marie and Will were considered pioneers in the settlement of the Pierce area. A picture of them, as well as the baptismal gown worn by their children at their baptism, is on display at the Pierce Museum.
Schafkopt
Whenever there was a gathering of the Will and Marie Sporleder family for a birthday or holiday, the men usually passed the time playing card games. As a young child, Verna Sporleder Weber recalls the card game called "Schafkopt." "Schaft" is the German word for sheep while the German word for head is "Kopt."
Verna remembers that Grandpa Will Sporleder's self-appointed task was to draw a sheep's head complete with curved horns with lines through them. As the game progressed, the lines were filled in and each mark had its own meaning as way of keeping score.

Daughter Lena's Family and Her Descendants
The Henry and Lena Sporleder Buckendahl Family
Lena Sporleder was born October 4, 1873, at Joliet, Illinois. At age two, she moved with her parents to Carroll, Iowa. Later, they moved to Pierce. She attended school and was confirmed into the Lutheran faith at St. John's Lutheran School east of Pierce.
Henry C. Buckendahl was born on March 27, 1867, at Hanover, Germany. He came to the United States with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Buckendahl, when he was three years of age. Information from the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Henry Senior was born in 1837 and died in 1922. His wife was born in 1841 and died in 1914. The family initially lived in Omaha, Nebraska and then homesteaded a farm six miles east of Pierce.
Henry and Lena were married on February 18, 1890, at St. John's Lutheran Church. To this marriage were born seven sons; Fritz Wilhelm (Fred), Carl, Hugo J., Otto, Theodore, Edward, and Ruben as well as two daughters, Lizzie and Rose.
Henry and Lena purchased a homestead tract seven miles east of Pierce and farmed until 1907. They then moved to Pierce and engaged in the hardware and implement business.
After serving on the Pierce city council, Henry was elected mayor for three terms. He served as the president of the Board of Directors of the Farmers Grain Company and the Pierce County Fair and Agricultural Association. He was a member of the Community Club. He was Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Zion Lutheran Church. At the time of his death, the local newspaper's obituary noted he, "was a man of honor and integrity. He was square in his business dealings and to this fact might be attributed his success as a Pierce business man."
Henry suffered from diabetes for a number of years and underwent surgery to amputate his left leg. The shock of the operation caused him to die of a heart attack on August 16, 1932, at the age of 64. Lena died September 24, 1941, at the age of 67. She had been of ill health for more than a year and died because of a heart condition as well as other complications.

The Albert and Lizzie Buckendahl Koehn Family
Lizzie L. Buckendahl was born November 29, 1890, in Pierce. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John=s Lutheran Church, Pierce. On April 3, 1912, Lizzie married Albert Ernest Koehn who was born January 4, 1891, in Hadar, Nebraska. To this marriage was born Earl. After their marriage, Albert and Lizzie lived on a farm south of Wee Town. Later, they moved to Pierce where Albert was Chief of Police. He also worked several years for Buckendahl Bros. Albert died November 30, 1961, at age 70. Lizzie lived in the Pierce Manor from 1971 until her death March 22, 1979.
The Fritz and Martha Kiepke Buckendahl Family
Fritz Wilhelm (Fred) Buckendahl was born September 3, 1893, in Pierce, Nebraska. On December 8, 1915, he married Martha Elisabeth Adelinda Kiepke at the Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk, Nebraska. Martha was born March 9, 1894, at the Kiepke homestead in Pierce County near Hadar. To this marriage were born Lulu Alvira, Arlene Edna, Hilda Lorene, Leon Dale, Lorene Mildred, and Jeanette. Fritz operated an implement business at Plainview before farming about one mile south of Wee Town and later east and south of Hoskins. He retired in 1953. Fritz and Martha were divorced in 1964. Martha lived with her daughter, Jeanette for about three years until she died November 21, 1969, at the age of 75. She is buried in the Zion Lutheran East Cemetery, Hoskins, Nebraska. Fritz died in May1964 at the age of 70.
The Edward and Rose Buckendahl Family
Rose Buckendahl was born December 14, 1896, in Pierce. On March 5, 1920, she married Edward Dunn who was born March 28, 1881. To this marriage were born Donald, Bonnie and James. Ed was the editor, owner, and publisher of the Pierce County Leader. Ed died May 20, 1946, at the age of 65. Rose lived in Pierce until 1945 when she moved to California to be with her children. She died May 11, 1972, at the age of 75, in North Hollywood, California.
The Hugo and Hazel Stack Buckendahl Family
Hugo J. Buckendahl was born November 30, 1898, in Pierce. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. After completing eighth grade, he attended Seward Concordia College where he received a teaching certificate. On April 3, 1921, Hugo married Hazel Stack who was born April 8, 1903. To this marriage was born Ethel. Hugo was the Pierce County Clerk for sixteen years. He was associated with a metal and drainage concern for twenty one years. He was a salesman for Armco Steel. Hazel worked at Brandeis Cafeteria and Emmanuel Hospital Cafeteria in Omaha. They lived Omaha, Norfolk and Fremont after leaving Pierce. Hugo died August 13, 1960, at the age of 61 from a heart attack. He is buried in Malvern, Iowa.
The Otto and Rose Hilgert Buckendahl Family
Otto Charles Buckendahl was born May 21, 1900, in Pierce. He was baptized and as a youth was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He graduated from high school and attended Concordia College at Steward, Nebraska. On September 24, 1922, Otto married Rose Hilgert who was born May 26, 1901. To this marriage was born Dale Edward on July 4, 1930. Also, a child was stillborn and another died in infancy. Otto had bookkeeping experience with the family's farm implement business in Pierce and worked for a variety of dealers trying to reorganize after the 1930's depression. Locations included Plainview, Sidney and Scottsbluff in Nebraska; Powell and Cheyenne in Wyoming; Sterling and Ft. Collins in Colorado. They lived in Scottsbluff when Otto died February 12, 1951, at the age of 49 when his car stalled in a snowstorm. Otto had gone to Cheyenne, Wyoming on a business trip and attempted to return home in the snowstorm. His car stalled and Otto tried to walk to a range house. His frozen body was found about a half mile from the house. Rose remained in Scottsbluff until 1955 when she moved to Boulder, Colorado to be near her son. She died in November 23, 1986, at the age of 85. Otto and Rose are buried in St. John's Cemetery east of Pierce.

Carl Buckendahl was born in 1902. He married Hattie Schwartz Nitz who was born in 1900. Carl died April 30, 1980, in Santa Ana, California. Hattie died in 1986.
The Theodore and LaVerne Mordhorst Buckendahl Family
Theodore Buckendahl was born August 2, 1904. On May 18, 1933, he married LaVerne Mordhorst who was born October 12, 1911. To this marriage were born Judith, Frances, and Gerald. Theodore and LeVerne were retired farmers in the Pierce area. Theodore died October 30, 1992, at the age of 88.

Edward Buckendahl was born January 15, 1907, at Pierce. On November 26, 1932, he married Marjorie Alexander who was born October 13, 1913, at Plainview, Nebraska. To this marriage was born Gene. Edward was a partner with his brother, Ruben, in the Buckendahl Brothers implement business since 1932. Ed died July 26, 1969, at the age of 62. Marjorie died November 3, 1978, at age 65.
The Ruben and Lorinda Voecks Buckendahl Family
Ruben Buckendahl was born October 9, 1911. On June 2, 1943, he married Lorinda Voecks who was born December 27, 1913. To this marriage was born Dian Kay. They resided in Pierce and were co-owners of Buckendahl Bros. John Deere from 1946 until retirement in 1977. Ruben served in the Army from September, 1942 until January, 1946, in England and Belgium. Ruben died December 24, 1989, at the age of 78 in Norfolk, Nebraska. Lorinda died June 18, 1994, at the age of 80.

The Earl and Clara Wagner Koehn Family
Earl Arthur Koehn was born November 12, 1912. He graduated from Pierce High School in 1931. On July 2, 1936, he married Clara Wagner who was born July 31, 1917. To this marriage were born Ethel and a daughter, Betty Ann, who died in infancy. Earl and Clara resided in Pierce where Earl was employed by Buckendahl Hardware and Implement. In 1941, he purchased the plumbing business from the hardware store and operated it until the time of his illness that resulted in his death. Earl died November 11, 1974, at the age of 61. He is buried in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Clara has since remarried.

Lulu Alvira Buckendahl was born November 22, 1916, at Pierce, Nebraska. She graduated from Pierce High School in 1934, and taught school until her untimely death on July 11, 1937, at the age of 19 at a Norfolk hospital. She is buried in the Zion Lutheran East Cemetery, Hoskins, Nebraska.

Arlene Edna Buckendahl was born December 31, 1917, at Pierce, Nebraska. Her daughter, Janice Faye, was born on June 29, 1938. Janice was raised by Arlene's parents.
The Vito and Hilda Buckendahl Kizas Family
Hilda Lorene Buckendahl was born March 3, 1919, at Plainview, Nebraska. On September 8, 1947, she married Vito Alfonso Kizas who was born February 8, 1918, at Donora, Pennsylvania. They were married at the Court House in Minneapolis. Vito died October 22, 1990, at the age of 72.
The Leon and Mardelle Sutton Buckendahl Family
Leon Dale Buckendahl was born November 9, 1920, at Plainview, Nebraska. He attended Pierce County schools until grades seven and eight that he completed at the Lutheran school in Pierce. On April 18, 1948, Leon married Mardelle Sutton who was born January 19, 1925. To this marriage were born Marcia Anne, Mary Lynne, Valerie Lee, Shari Jean, Scott, and Russel. Leon served in the Army from 1942 to 1946. After their marriage, Leon and Mardelle farmed near Wee Town and McLean, Nebraska. Leon died October 22, 1989, at the age of 68. He is buried in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery at Norfolk.

Lorene Mildred Buckendahl was born August 26, 1922, at Plainview, Nebraska. On August 26, 1922, she married Ronald Painter who was born November 21, 1924, in Miller South Dakota. They were married in a Lutheran church in Omaha. To this marriage were born Robert Ronald on May 17, 1958 and Rita Lorene on December 12, 1960.

Jeanette Lulu Buckendahl was born November 6, 1937, in Wayne, Nebraska. On September 19, 1964, she married Charles Madison Lucas who was born October 8, 1927. They were married at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, Norfolk, Nebraska. To this marriage were born Heather Lyn on February 15, 1969, and Brett David on November 26, 1970. Charles died June 1, 1994, at the age of 66. He is buried in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery.

Ethel graduated from the Methodist School of Nursing in Omaha in 1946. Ethel passed away October 24, 1962, at the age of 37 after a lengthy illness caused by leukemia. She is buried in Malvern, Iowa.

The William and Louise Sporleder Koehler Family
Louise Sporleder was born July 4, 1875, at Kellogg, Iowa. On May 3, 1898, she married William Koehler who was born July 3, 1875. The couple established their home on the Koehler farm east of Pierce. Three children, Esther, Meta, and Martin, were born to this marriage. On September 29, 1901, William unexpectedly died at age 26 of "consumption@ that is now better known as tuberculosis.
Louise was left with the task of raising three young children as well as managing the farm. At the time of her death on July 16, 1942, at the age of 67, the local newspaper observed in reverence, "Her life was one of hardship, sorrow and sacrifice, but she gave it willingly and with a cheerful heart."

Esther Koehler was born March 6, 1897. On February 8, 1917, she married Edward Luebe who was born September 26, 1897. To this marriage were born Loren Albert, Orville John Martin, Elvira, Waleen Carl, Eldreth Mae, Delmar Marben, Mardell Lavonne, and Duane Harold. The family lived in the Pierce area. Edward died July 31, 1977, at the age of 79. Esther died December 26, 1978, at the age of 81. They are buried in the Prospect View Cemetery south of Pierce.

The Luebe brothers numbered five. They acquired nicknames or were referred to by other than their first name. Loren was known as Tony. Orville was referred to as John when he was young and Orville later in life. Waleen was called Tobe. Delmar was characterized as Shadow. Duane was known as Dode. All of the brothers, except Duane, served in the military during World War II.

Loren Albert Luebe was born April 29, 1917. On February 8, 1945, he married Rose Koval was born September 24, 1924. To this marriage were born Margaret Rose, Janette Marie, Patricia Ann, Angela Theresa and Thomas who was born and died October 22, 1962. The family lived in the Pierce area where Loren was a truck driver. Loren died April 6, 1985, at the age of 67. Rose died October 8, 1994, at the age of 70. They are buried in the Catholic Cemetery.

Orville John Martin Luebe was born August 31, 1918. On June 3, 1949, he married Bernice E. Meyer who was born August 17, 1917. They were married in the Zion East Lutheran Parsonage. To this marriage were born Gayle Lynne, Kent John, Kirk Jay, Debra Susan, Diane Renee, Julie Ann, and Jane Beth. Orville died July 4, 1992, at the age of 73. Bernice died April 11, 1996, at the age of 79. They are buried in the Prospect View Cemetery.

Earl died on May 5, 1995, at the age of 71.

Fred Sporleder, Sr. was born June 14, 1877, in Carroll, Iowa. At age eight, he moved with his parents to Pierce. In 1906, he married Dora Siemsen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Siemsen. To this marriage were born Mary, Clarence, and Fred, Jr. The elder Fred died of typhoid fever on August 19, 1908, at age 31.

Son John's Family
John Sporleder, Sr.
John Sporleder, Sr. was born July 7, 1879, in Carroll, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended parochial school in Pierce county.
On May 20, 1903, John married Emma Christina Meier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Meier. The marriage was performed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Randolph by Rev. H. Streld. To this marriage were born Carl, Mamie, and Edgar.
The family made their home on a farm three miles east of Pierce. Emma died of typhoid-pneumonia at the age of 24 in 1908. Her condition was weakened by her caring for her husband who had contacted the same illness. Her brother, Louie, helped the family during their illness, contacted the disease, and later died.
John gave up farming and worked in Pierce at the Buckendahl Hardware Store. On February 27, 1914, John married Christena Lena Poignee. She was born February 18, 1896, in Moville, Iowa. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. George Poignee. The family then returned to farming. To this marriage were born Roy, Verna, Raymond, Wanda, and John, Jr. In 1927, the family moved to a farm west of Pierce where they farmed until 1945. John and Christena then retired to Pierce.
Christena died October 18, 1956, at the age of 60. John died September 3, 1960, at the age of 81 after he had undergone surgery for a ruptured appendix.

Carl Wilhelm Heinrich Sporleder was born June 15, 1904. On March 27, 1938, he married Lena Emma Dora Freida Papstein who was born November 17, 1917. To this marriage were born Phyliss Ilene, Jerrine Martha, and LaDonna Mae who was born February 21, 1946. Carl died September 26, 1978, at the age of 74.
The Fred and Mamie Sporleder Kluender Family
Mamie Sporleder was born November 14, 1905, in Pierce County, Nebraska. She attended school in Pierce County. On May 25, 1925, she married Fred Kluender who was born in 1905. They were married in Yankton, South Dakota. To this marriage were born Elden, Gene, Dean, and Harlan. They farmed for many years in Pierce and Wayne counties in Nebraska. In 1973, they retired and moved to Norfolk where they are members of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church. In 1996, Mamie moved to the Pierce Manor where she died on March 17, 1998, at the age of 92. Burial services were held on March 20, 1998, at Zion Lutheran Church, Pierce. She is buried in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery.
A 70th Wedding Anniversary
On May 5, 1995, Fred and Mamie Kluender observed their 70th wedding anniversary with a card shower. They were honored by their sons Elden of Denver, Colorado and Dean and Gene of Aurora, Colorado; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The Edgar and Edith Butler Sporleder Family
Edgar Henrich Ludwig Sporleder was born May 12, 1908. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. On September 11, 1931, he married Edith Butler who was born October 17, 1909. To this marriage were born Roland C., LaVonne, Delilah, and LaVerne G. The family farmed in the Pierce and Osmond area. After Edith's death in 1978, Edgar moved to the town of Pierce where he was a resident of Pierce Manor until his death on April 3, 1996, at age of 87. Edith and Edgar are buried in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Norfolk.

They have two children. Darrell married Faye Hinken. They have three sons. Donna married Dave Hinken. They have two daughters. Wanda died July 6, 1972, at the age of 51.

William Carl Sporleder
William Carl Sporleder was born in 1882 in Carroll County, Iowa. In 1885, he and his family moved to Pierce County, Nebraska.
At the age of 26 in the spring of 1908, William was considered to be in the prime of his life. He was a hard working young man who had purchased new farm machinery in preparation for the upcoming spring planting season.
William was driving his team of horses and wagon on his way home to his parent's house on a Saturday evening when he was violently thrown from the wagon. Apparently the high spirited team suddenly stopped or started. The rider-less team continued on to the house. Realizing something was awry, his brother and neighbor began a search and discovered William's warm body by the roadside next to a culvert. They took him to his sister's home that was near by and summoned the local doctor. Upon examination, the doctor concluded William's neck and right arm were broken in addition to a bruise over his left eye and on his forehead.
The exact cause of death was not determined. William's father thought he may have been kicked by one of the horses. It is also possible that William was thrown from the wagon.

The Albert and Mary Sporleder Koehler Family
Mary Sophia Sporleder was born August 18, 1883, in Carroll, Iowa and baptized on October 7, 1883. As a young child, she moved with her parents to a farm east of Pierce. She attended school in District 20 and later at St. John's Lutheran School where she was confirmed into the Lutheran faith by Rev. Ludwich Bendin in April of 1897.
Albert Koehler was born July 25, 1880, on his parent's homestead north of Pierce. As a youth, he attended District 3 School and St. John's Lutheran School where he was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith.
On February 2, 1902, Mary and Albert were married by Rev. A. Hofius. To this marriage were born William, Lawrence, Elta, and Zelda Freida Martha as well as Albert, Jr. who died in infancy on September 20, 1914. Initially, they lived for three years with Albert's parents. Later, they purchased one of his father's farms where they lived for 47 years until retiring to Pierce in 1951.
Albert died October 9, 1952, at the age of 72. He had been in ill health for two years prior to his death. Mary died May 23, 1968, at the age of 84. Both are buried in the St. John's Lutheran Church cemetery. Albert's funeral service was conducted in both the German and English languages.
Christmas Time at the Koehlers
When the families would get together for Christmas at Albert and Martha Koehler's, the grandchildren would play in the their large kitchen. Grandma Koehler would give each of them big red apples, the best homemade molasses cookies, and very good sugar cookies. At the end of the evening, the grandchildren would all sing Christmas carols for Grandpa and Grandma.

William Koehler was born November 29, 1902. On February 12, 1924, he married Margaret Noerenburg who was born October 29, 1907. To this marriage were born Geraldine, Marvelyne, Kenneth, Darrell, Merna and Galen. Margaret died June 9, 1942, at the age of 34.
On April 6, 1951, William married Lillian Breuckner Synovec who was born February 12, 1905. Lillian died in May of 1983, at the age of 78. William died in July of 1991, at the age of 88.

The Henry and Martha Koehler Sporleder, Sr. Family
Henry Sporleder, Sr., was born September 4, 1889, on the family farm east of Pierce. He attended the local school and was confirmed into the Lutheran faith. On December 23, 1908, he married Martha Koehler who was born December 6, 1885. They took over the family farm when Henry's parents, Will and Marie, retired and moved to Pierce. To this marriage were born Edna, Ervin, Loyd, and Henry, Jr. On February 27, 1941, Martha passed away at the age of 55. In 1943, Henry, Sr., died at the age of 54. They are buried in St. John's Cemetery east of Pierce.

Ervin Sporleder was born July 14, 1909. On June 27, 1948, he married Agnes Buske Zaukte who was born October 20, 1911. She has two children, Duane and Carolyn, from a previous marriage. Ervin died April 17, 1964, at the age of 54.

Loyd Sporleder was born December 8, 1913. On October 4, 1943, he married Marvene Kruger who was born October 3, 1922. To this marriage was born William L. Loyd and Marvene were farmers in the Pierce, Hoskins, and Randolph areas. Loyd died December 24, 1986, at the age of 73 and is buried in the Randolph City Cemetery.

They were farmers in the Humphrey and Randolph area. Henry died November 17, 1989, at the age of 69. Bernice died November 28, 1981, at the age of 63. They are buried in the Prospect View Cemetery south of Pierce.

The George and Freda Sporleder Malzahn, Sr. Family
Freda Sporleder was born April 4, 1893. She married George Malzahn, Sr. who was born November 5, 1887. To this marriage were born Bernice, Gladys, Elva, Helen, George, Jr., Darlene, Troy Edgar, and Lee. George, Jr. lived only four days and is buried in the cemetery by Pierce. The family initially lived on a farm near Pierce. Later, they moved to Norfolk and then Schuyler where George worked. Finally, they lived in Omaha where George worked in a meat packinghouse. Freda did housecleaning and worked for a while in a rug factory. George died October 16, 1960, at the age of 72. Freda died April 17, 1961, at the age of 68.
A House Moving Accident
While living in Norfolk, George Malzahn was assisting in the moving of houses. The work crew was moving a house down a big hill and a roller slipped. George attempted to straighten the roller and his leg was smashed. After his leg was amputated, he used an artificial leg. His leg was buried by George, Jr. who had died in infancy.

Ella Sporleder
Ella Dorthea Sporleder was born March 21, 1896. She was baptized on April 2, 1896 at St. John's Lutheran Church by Rev. Bendin and confirmed on March 10, 1910, by Rev. M. F. Scheips. In 1922, Ella was married to Richard L. Malzahn at Pierce. He was born in 1898 and died in 1940. He is buried in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Pierce County. On December 30, 1941, Ella was married to Arthur Nelson at Grace Lutheran Church in Wayne. They farmed in the Dixon and Concord area from 1942 until Arthur's death in 1968. Ella then moved to Pierce. Ella died August 9, 1979, at age 83. She is buried in a cemetery at Concord.
