Ina was born Dec. 17, 1916, to Edmund and Bessie (Smith) Callaghan on a farm near Alexandria. On Nov. 26, 1936 she married Walter Bernt in Osceola. They farmed in Polk County. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one granddaughter, two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Orville and Merle Callaghan; a sister, Luella Callaghan; and companion, Elmer Cress. FLEEK (1942 - 2010) LINCOLN – James E. Fleek, 67, of Lincoln, died May 30. He was born on Aug. 6, 1942 to Harry and Alyce (Meidinger) Fleek in Lincoln. He was a retired insurance broker. Hoffman, 73, of Wahoo, died June 1 after a courageous 18 yr. battle with cancer. He was born on Dec. 17, 1936 to Raymond and Matilda (Jessen) Hoffman in Fremont. Darrol served as a proud member of the Nebraska National Guard from March 1957 to March 1963. On June 11, 1966, he married Patricia Holoubek and they had three children, Lisa, Laura and Randy. James W. CRUICKSHANK (1925 - 2010 ) ORLANDO, Fla. – James W. Cruickshank, 84, of Orlando, Fla. formerly of Lincoln and Omaha, died May 23 in Orlando, Fla. He was born Sept 19, 1925 to George and Edith Cruickshank in Wahoo. He served in the Marine Corps during WWII. He was honorably discharged on April 12, 1946. He was a life-long farmer, raised beef cattle and did custom baling for area farmers. She was preceded in death by her parents; and stepfather, Vernon Martin. She donated her body to Creighton University School of Medicine. Elsie M. NOVACEK (1925 - 2010 ) BRAINARD – Elsie M. Novacek, 85, of Brainard, died June 19 in Lincoln. Elsie was born May 14, 1925 to Emil and Mary (Hroach) Petrzilka in Loma. On June 10, 1946, she married Leonard Novacek at St. Luke Catholic Church in Loma. They made their home on their farm near Loma where she helped her husband with the farm operation. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two infant brothers. A gathering took place June 23 with wake service at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Brainard. Private inurnment at St. Luke Cemetery at Loma. Matilda A. SOUKUP (1919 - 2010) NORTH BEND – Matilda A. Soukup, 90, died June 10. She was born Dec. 4, 1919 to Charles and Frantiska (Pallas) Beranek in Morse Bluff. She married Alvin E. Soukup on Mar 5, 1941 in Schuyler. The couple farmed near Morse Bluff. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a son, Charles Soukup; and a brother, Charles Beranek. Funeral service held June 24 at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. Burial at Killian Cemetery at Morse Bluff. Clarence OWEN ASHLAND – Clarence G. Owen, 76, passed away on June 15, 2010, at South Haven in Wahoo. He was born in Genoa on Nov. 12, 1933 to Virgil and Nellie (Pierce) Owen. He was united in marriage to Ruth Barnes on July 11, 1952 at the Ashland First Christian Church. Clarence was preceded in death by an infant son Patrick, his parents and a brother, Raymond. Celebration of Life service held June 26 at the First Christian Church in Ashland. He was born June 22, 1960, in Nebraska City to Orville Frank and Delrosa Joan (Kreifels) Riege. He married Margaret Studnicka on Oct. 31, 1997 in Plattsmouth. He was preceded in death by his father Orville; sister, Joan Nelson; mother-in-law, Alyce Studnicka; niece, Katie Johns; nephew, Gage Nelson; grandparents, Harry and Vi Riege; Otto and Gertrude Kreifels; Robert and Neola Studnicka; Robert and Erma Schwartz; aunts and uncles; Woody and Phyllis Kreifels, Ramona and Harry Schreiner, Jerry and Nettie Kreifels, Bernard Kreifels, Dan Kreifels, Olin Spanjer and Mel Engberg. Ensminger of Lincoln was held June 26 at the First United Methodist Church in Waverly. Allan, 98, died June 23. He was born June 16, 1912 in Louisville, Kentucky to Harvey M. and Virginia Mae (Krall) Ensminger. He moved to Nebraska in 1946. He was preceded in death by wife, Gladys; parents; sister, Kathryn Cromis; brothers, George and Richard; and great-grandson, Christopher Swanson. Gladys L. ECKLEY-JOHNSON (1931 - 2010) MEAD – Gladys L. Eckley-Johnson, 79, died June 23 at her home in Mead. Gladys was born Jan. 24, 1931 to Robert and Emma (Lambrecht) Smith at Chadron. She was married to Gerald Eckley on June 14, 1948 in Winner, S.D. She and her husband moved to Wahoo in 1955 for one year, before moving to the Mead area. She married Milton Johnson in 1993 and they continued to live in Mead. Milton passed away in 1998. She was preceded in death by her husbands; and sisters, Elsie Amick and Mary McKenzie. Funeral service was held June 26, at Svoboda Funeral Home. Interment was at Morningside Cemetery in Mead. Glen H. HARGER (1926-2010) ASHLAND – Glen H. Harger, 83, of Ashland, formerly of Plattsmouth, died June 26, 2010, in Ashland. He was born on July 8, 1926 in Memphis, to Harvey and Josephine (Van Horn) Harger. He married Betty Jean Rumsey on Jan. 29, 1960 in Ashland. She passed away in Sept of 1988. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1947 where he was stationed at Camp Fannin, Texas, Camp Beale, Calif. and in Seoul, South Korea where he taught Army education and current event classes to other soldiers. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Betty; brother Don Harger; sister Genelle Pike; brothers-in-law, Floyd Root and Larry Felton and step sister Shirley Fundaburg. Memorial service held July 1, at the Plattsmouth VFW Post 2543 Hall in Plattsmouth, with military honors by VFW Post 2543 and 4 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Ashland with military honors by the American Legion Post 129. Kenneth OLMSTEAD (1919 - 2010) SYRACUSE – Kenneth Deane Olmstead, 91, of Syracuse, died June 22. He was born Mar 16, 1919, to Ira and Josephine (Littlefield) Olmstead in Seward. He served as a Navy Signalman in WWII. On May 12, 1944 he married Mary in Seward. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Margaret Louise Olmstead; and sister, Helen Jean Beatty. The funeral service was held June 26 at the United Methodist Church in Syracuse. Interment was in the Seward Cemetery. He was born Jan. 1, 1981 to Randy and Judy (Carlson) Prochaska. Keith QUICK (1919 - 2010) VALENTINE – Keith Quick, 91, died June 19 in Valentine. He was born June 22, 1919 to Earl and Sadie Quick near Ithaca. He married Eunice Hughes on Nov. 22, 1941. They moved to Omaha and he entered the Air Force in 1944 and served in WWII. He trained as a welder and machinist. The family moved to Valentine in 1954. He was employed at Keely Implement. In 1957 he started Valentine Machine and Welding Works. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Earl, Roy and Cecil; and sisters, Eloise Speck and Pauline Miller. Funeral services were held June 24 at the Valentine Methodist Church. Burial was at Mount Hope Cemetery at Valentine. Dion K. SMAIL (1951 - 2010) ASHLAND – Dion K. Smail, 59, died June 28, 2010, at his home in Ashland. He was born Jan. 28, 1951 in Norman, Okla. to Herbert K. and Margaret (Stewart) Smail. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard and attended boot camp in Cape May, N.J. After leaving the military, he owned and operated his own Tire Repair Shop in Lincoln. He was preceded in death by his father. Memorial services will be held July 10, at 2 p.m. at Marcy Mortuary in Ashland, with military honors by the Ashland American Legion Post 129. Swanda, 98, of Brainard, died June 24 in David City. She was born on Feb. 2, 1912 to James and Frances (Riha) Petrzilka in Brainard. She attended school in Brainard. On Dec. 21, 1933 she married Cyril C. Swanda in Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; sons, Edward, Bill and Gary Lee; daughters, Norma Kavan, Darlene Maly and Margie Petrzilka; brothers, Jim and George Petrzilka; sisters, Bessie Patocka and Helen Hurt; and great-grandson, Jeremy Beckman. YUNKER (1953 - 2010) ASHLAND – Walter A. Yunker, 56, of Ashland, passed away June 29, 2010 at the Hospice House in Omaha. He was born in Omaha on Sept. 18, 1953 to Walter and Frances (Baker) Yunker. He served in the U.S. Marines and was honorably discharged in Sept of 1973. He was united in marriage to Barbara Estey on Oct. 19, 1985 at the First Christian Church in Ashland. ELSE (1916 - 2010) ELM CREEK – Lila Harriet Else, 94, died on Tuesday, July 6. Lila was born on Jan. 7, 1916 to Charles Larson and Pauline (Larson) Larson on a farm northwest of Holdrege in Phelps County. She was united in marriage to Delmer Else of Overton on Feb. 15, 1950.
