Sioux City Journal Aug 2010 WATERBURY, Neb. -- Jack L. FICKLE, 77, of Waterbury died at his residence Aug. 1, 2010, following a battle with cancer. Memorial services at the Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City. Military rites conducted by the Dept. of the Navy, assisted by the South Sioux City American Legion Post 307. Burial will be at a later date. Jack was born Aug. 21, 1932, to Ivan and Helen (Thompson) Fickle, in rural Wayne, Neb. At the age of 18, he joined the service, serving in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. He married Virginia Surber in 1981. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Dolly (Wayne) Noe; and brother, "Babe". COLERIDGE, Neb. -- Rose V. Arrangements are under the direction of Wintz Funeral Home in Coleridge. WINNEBAGO, Neb. -- Vernon L. SMITH, 43, of Winnebago passed away Aug. 2, 2010. Vernon was born Nov. 9, 1966, in Winnebago. He was a 1997 graduate of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia, N.M. He was a lifelong resident of Winnebago. He was currently serving with the U.S. Army Reserves, 960th Quartermaster Company in Sioux City. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Gustave and Victoria Smith; and a sister, Fanelophine "See-ga" Smith. JACKSON, Neb. -- Waldo "Wally" BIRKLEY, 87, of Jackson died Aug. 5, 2010 at a Sioux City hospital, from injuries suffered in a July 23rd traffic accident. Wally was born Dec. 27, 1922, in rural Maskell, Neb., to Ole and Josie (Johnson) Birkley. On Sept. 7, 1952, he married Joy Ann Lieber at Salem Lutheran Church in Ponca. Joy died on Jan. 27, 2006. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Joy; his parents, Ole and Josie; and three brothers, Dale, Raymond and Joe. DECATUR, Neb. -- Lavina R. WALKER, 76, of Decatur passed away Aug. 3, 2010 at the Indian Health Service Hospital in Winnebago, Neb. Services at the Omaha Nation School in Macy, Neb. Lavina was born Feb. 22, 1934, in Winnebago, Neb., the daughter of David and Lena (Green) Whitehawk. She was a member of the Native American Church, and belonged to the Thunder Clan.
