Queries

Queries are placed in genealogical publications, and/or on homepages, with the intended result of locating information about a particular person or persons. If the query is unclear or asks for too much information, it is likely to be bypassed.

Focus a query on one or two surnames. Once contact is made with someone researching in the same area, then ask additional questions.

Develop a specific goal, such as hatch, patch, dispatch* information. The phrase "all information" is not going increase your chances of a solid contact to receive information. In some instances there may be over eighty (80) volumes to check before 1900 and as many as twice that number to check since that time.

Three pieces of information are needed for anything besides a "pure chance" strike. (1) Submit as complete a name as possible. (2) Submit as accurate a time frame as possible. And, (3) Submit as good a location as possible.

Several short, specific queries are preferred over one long, involved inquiry. This should elicite better and faster results.

On the subject line of your message requesting a query to be posted, use the word "NUCKOLLS Co Query" and the surname in CAPS, to attract the attention of the site coordinator. Include your name and address at the end of the query. Persons answering queries often object to just nicknames or "handles". It should go without saying, still I mention it: it is important to be courteous. And, do not feel written statements are negative. You really cannot tell what emotion is behind the written word. What might seem "short" or "uncomplimentary" may be just a "hurried" statement without any negative intent.

--- "There is so much good in the worst of us and so much bad in the best of us that it behooves all of us not to talk about the rest of us." ---author unknown :(

* A phrase I coined about 1966 meaning birth, marriage, death.
