Morris Freeman, 53,of Burwell died unexpectedly Wed evening,
Sept 23, after suffering a heart attack near Ord. Mr and Mrs Freeman and family
had taken a pickup to Ord and loaded a refrigerator and were enroute back
to Burwell when Morris was stricken. The Ord emergency unit was summoned,
but Morris was pronounced dead on arrival at the Valley Co Hospital.
Funeral services were held Sat Sept 26 at the United Methodist Church
in Burwell, with the Rev Richard Shapland officiating. Mrs Dale Harrod was
soloist, Mrs Merle Edghill was accompanist. Selections were "In the Garden",
and "Beyond the Sunset."
Pallbearers were Billy Richardson, Anson Kinney, Terrell Sanders,
Ray Sears, Robert Smolik, James Clabaugh. Militaryrites were by the Clifford
Clark American Legion Post 298 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6155.
Interment was in the Cottonwood Cemetery at Burwell. Fleming Funeral Home
was in charge of arrangements.
Morris Lee Freeman, son of William P Freeman and Mary D Davis Freeman,
was born June 27,1917 at Burwell, and passed on to his eternal home Sept 23,1970
at the age of 53 years 2 months and 27 days. Morris lived on a farm in the
Burwell Colmmunity with his parents and attended the Midvale District grade
school. On Oct 13,1941, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Moore in Burwell.
To this union 6 children were born. On Oct 16,1941, (three days after his
wedding) Morris entered the US Army and received his training at Fort Sill,
Okla. And went from there to the South Pacific where he served in the field
artillery until his discharge in Nov of 1945, without ever receiving a furlough.
Upon returning home he took up his interest in life by returning to farming
and ranching, until he moved to Burwell in 1952. He then worked in sand and
gravel work as a truck driver and pumper until suffering his heart attack.
Morris joined the Methodist Church in April, 1959, He also was an
active member of the Clifford Clark American Legion Post 298 and the Veterans
of Foreign Wars Post 6155. He also served as special police at the Legion
Hall and was well liked and respected in this work.
Morris was well liked by his friends and will always be remembered
as a good husband and loving father. He loved his grandchildren and will
be greatly missed by all who knew him..
Morris was preceded in death by his mother in 1946 and hisfather
last year. His brother, Harvey and infant sister, Emma May.
Left to hold sacred his memory are his widow, Dorothy; his children,
Marilyn, Mrs John Kolar of Sargent, Morris Lee Jr of Burwell, Wilberta, Mrs
Verlin Hood of Grand Island, Richard, Cheryl Zandra all at home. His step
mother Wilheminia of Ord, his brothers, Harold of Burwell, Ray of Sioux City,
Virgil of Burwell, Milo of North Platte, his sisters, Luverda Long of Burwell,
and Esther, Mrs Jim Taylor of Amelia. Three grandsons, one granddaughter,
many nieces, nephews and other relatives and a host of friends.
