- I have had several ancestors who lived in Dakota County and
the surrounding area. Michael Dougherty married Winnifred Cain in Lucan,
Ontario and started their family there. He eventually migrated to Dubuque,
Iowa in 1870. They had a few more children (final count 12) then ventured
west To Jackson. One son, William married Catherine O'Neill from the Emerson
area. They resided there for some years, Kate is buried at Rose Hill
Cemetery, William disappeared. Another son Michael (M. D.) moved to Sioux
City, Iowa and married Katherine Marquette. They were very prosperous owning
a hauling and storage firm there. In 1887 Michael Sr. went west to Dawes
County to find more/better land. While gone, Winnifred moved in with family
in Covington. She fell down some stairs and died shortly thereafter. She is
buried at the Jackson burying grounds. I believe this is now referred to as
the St. John's Cemetery. She is recorded in the St. Patrick's parish records
as Mary Dougherty. One of Michael Sr.'s sisters, Mary married Patrick Hogan
in Lucan, Ontario. They migrated to Dakota County and I believe have left
there mark there. Another of Michael Sr.'s sons, John married and Mandeville
while in Dakota county. He and others of the family migrated west to Box
Butte County and family still resides there. There are other bits and
pieces. E-mail me at [email protected] to see if we can fit some pieces
together.
