JANESVILLE CEMETERY
This is one of the oldest cemeteries in Custer County, Nebraska. It is located 2 ½ miles southeast of Berwyn - on the north side of Highway 2 and the Burlington Northern railroad tracks.
The land for this cemetery was purchased from James Dinwiddie for $10.00 an acre and was to be called Janesville cemetery ground. The first meeting of the cemetery board was held on Nov. 18, 1885 and consisted of the following people: Thomas Jeffery, Henry Hogg, Nels Lee, C. D. Helms, R. P. McKnight, James Hopkins, James Dinwiddie, James McCrea, J. M. Hull, H. Weaklin, L. C. Price, J. C. Scribner, J. M. Hale and J. T. Russell. These men agreed to share the expenses of surveying and plotting the above named ground.
Later a five-wire fence was placed around the two east tiers of the cemetery lots. The lots were to sell for five dollars a lot and could be paid for by work and fencing the lots. From time to time the fences were moved and changed until now there is a fence on all sides of the cemetry with a gate on the west.
In April of 1917 a three acre plot of land - which joined the original cemetery - was purchased from Mrs. J. F. Russell for twenty-five dollars. This land began at the northeast corner of the orginal cemetery, then north in line with east line of present cemetery for sixteen rods, then west at right angles to within 33 ½ feet of center line running north and south through Section 26, Range 19, then parallel with said line to center line running east and west through said section, then east to point of beginning. Each person was to be assessed one dollar to help pay of fence and posts with labor to be donated.
Early in the year of 1925, sparks from a Burlington train set fire to the grassland which burned over the cemetery ground and burned some of the trees. For damages from the fire, one hundred fifty dollars was received from the railroad. A fire guard was later plowed around the cemetery to help protect it from future damage by fires.
There are no exact records but it is thought that several of the first burials in the cemetery were those of small children who died during a diphtheria epidemic in 1885-1886.
According to records, only two lots in the orginial cemetery have not been sold, but several of those lots that had been purchased are without markers.
Known unmarked graves will be listed at the end of this index.
