In the year 1869, the first school district was organized in Ulysses, Nebraska, and classes were held in the homes of one of the school board members, with the term lasting three months. A couple years later this changed to a nine-month term. First board was Sumner Darnell, director, Dr. S. T. Thrapp, moderator, and J. M. Palmer, treasurer. First superintendent was Mr. Prince.
In 1871 an 18 x 24 building was erected on the east side of the railroad tracks. It was used until 1877, when a larger building was built at 4th and D Streets, now site of the present post office. This school was temporarily closed for a few months due to fire in 1884.
In 1888-89, a new brick building was built on the present site on West C Street. In 1889 the first class of four students graduated, thus the second accredited high school in the state of Nebraska. Chester Aldrich, the second superintendent served later as a Nebraska governor.
In August of 1910 lightning destroyed this building. The present building was erected in 1911. The auditorium that adjoins it was built in 1936 by Works Program Administration (WPA) workers (government).

From 1889 thru 1960 871 graduates had attended this school. Ulysses joined the Seward School District. Grades K thru 6 remained until 1983, at which time the school was closed, due to a decline in enrollment.
The school colors were Scarlet and Gray and the school song is the "Scarlet and the Gray." The mascot was the Trojan. The Alumni has met every five years since 1970, for a banquet on Memorial Day weekend.
You may choose from all the colors
That have stood for high school fame
Theres the orange, the black, and scarlet
Theyre sure to kindle fame.
But the only combination
That cheers us on our way
As we sing with adoration
Is the Scarlet and the Gray.Through the four long years of high school
Midst the scenes we know so well
As the mystic charms of knowledge
We vainly seek to spell
Or we win our mental victories
As we strive well as we may
We will neer forget the pleasures
Neath the Scarlet and the Gray. When the care of life oer take us
Mingling fast our locks with gray
Should our dearest hopes betray us
False fortunes fade away
Still we banish care and sadness
As we think of those bright days
And recall those times of gladness
Neath the Scarlet and the Gray.
