A Brief History of Arthur County

Arthur County, named for President Chester A. Arthur, was defined by the Nebraska Legislature during it's 1887-1888 session. Arthur County and neighboring McPherson County were originally under the jurisdiction of Logan County. In 1890, McPherson County was organized, with the Arthur County area under it's jurisdiction.

With the population growth in the area after the passage of the "Kinkaid Homestead Act of 1904" (the combined Arthur-McPherson population grew from 517 in 1910 to 2470 to 1920), the people in the western McPherson County area wanted a more centrally located government, and so began agitation for the organization of Arthur County. The 1912-1913 session of the State Legislature passed a second resolution for Arthur County's organization.

With the appointment of the first County officials by the Governor, Arthur County officially came into existence on June 7, 1913.

[Old Glory] The USGenWeb Project

Here you will find a coordinated effort to organize and make available genealogy research information via the Internet. This project is maintained and supported by many hundreds of volunteers.

The project, which started in Kentucky in early 1996, is organized by states and counties, with each volunteer county coordinator being responsible for maintaining a home page with information about resources available for that county and a place to post and view county related research queries.

Volunteers are needed in all phases of the project including creating and maintaining home pages, hosting mailing lists, organizing files submitted by other volunteers, and transcribing public records for inclusion in the archives.

If you are interested in adopting an available Nebraska county, contact the NEGenWeb state coordinator.
