The Pembina County Historical Society was organized in 1967, the same year as the Pembina County Centennial.
The need for an organization to preserve and collect old documents and items was realized as a result of the planning
and execution of the Pembina County Centennial.
The first PCHS officers were:
Lorne Hillier, Hensel, President
Clifton Jenson, Cavalier, Vice President
Georgia Maize, Crystal, Secretary
Wesley Argue, Hamilton, Treasurer and Legal officer
Hector Johnstone, Walhalla, Director-1 year term
Mrs Harold Jenson, Sr., Neche, Director-2 year term
Mrs George Rathbun, Crystal, Director-3 year term
There was a committee appointed to formulate the charter and by-laws consisting of: Clifton Jenson, Wesley Argue and
Franklin Page, Hamilton.
The first year, the PCHS had a charter membership of 100 and the membership fee was $5.00. The first activity that the
PCHS planned was the 1968 Historical Day which was held July 7,1968 at the Icelandic State Park.
In 1969 the PCHS purchased the old post office building on Main Street in Cavalier and the museum was open until 1998
when the building was purchased and construction was begun on the new Museum building south of the Icelandic State Park.
The new Museum building shell was completed in 2001.
