Carl F Schultz- Leeds News June 27, 1907

A Pioneer Passes Away
C.F. Schultz, a Veteran of the Civil War dies after a brief illness

Sunday morning this community was shocked to hear that C.F. Schultz had passed to the Great Beyond at 6:45, after an illness lasting only a week.

Mr. Schultz returned from the state encampment of the G.A.R. at Hillsboro, week before last, not feeling very well. As soon as he returned he went to visit his son, Otto, at Hurricane Lake. Soon after arriving there he began to feel worse, and concluded to come home. He was brought here and immediately took to his bed. Dr. Warren was summoned who found the patient suffering from a severe attack of inflammation of the bladder, whcih would not yield to the usual treatment. Dr. Sihler, of Devil's Lake, was called in consultation, and although everything was done that could be done, the patient grew rapidly worse and expired at the time stated above. The disease with which he was stricken would not of itself have proven fatal, but own to his old age and his weakened condition of his constitution, he had not the strength to withstand the attack.

Carl Friedrich Schultz was born May 12 1839 in Sachesberg, Prussia, and died Sunday, June 23, 1907, having just passed his 68th year. He came to America with is parents at the age of twelve, and settled in Wisconsin. Soon after the Civil War broke out he enlisted in Company B, 4th Wisconsin Regiment of Volunteers, at Ripon, Wis., and served three years. At the time he was mustered out he was first sergeant of his company, having served with distinction and honor through the many hard fought battles of that famous regiment. On December 10, 1965, he was married to Caroline Catherine Weisgerber at Ripon, Wis. who survives him. In 1865 he brought his family to Dakota territory and settled at Penn, Ramsey County, where he settled on a farm, and lived until 1904 when he moved to this city (Leeds).

Mr. Schultz was an unassuming man, approachable, sympathetic and kind. He was a loving husband and father, loyal to his friends, who were many, and indeed a model man and courteous gentleman. He was a member of the General Crook Post, No. 33, Devils Lake, the only society to which be belonged.

Besides his widow, who feels the loss of her life companion keenly, Mr. Schultz leaves to mourn his departure four sons, Mayor John O. Schultz and H.J. Schultz of this city (Leeds); Otto of Hurricane Lake; William A of Penn; two daughters, Mrs. Dingman of Penn, and Mrs. Dimm of Leavings, Alta., and one brother E.A. Schultz of Montello, Wis. and three sisters, Mrs. W.A. Hasse of Lincoln, Neb., Mrs. Paulien Day of Budsin, Wis., and Mrs. Krueger of Oshkosh, Wis., and twenty-four grandchildren.

The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church, yesterday afternoon and were attended by the friends of the deceased. The pall bearers were M.L. Strong, John Techtmann, H Henrietta, F.E. Wood, ... Howrey, and Nels Jacobson. The services at the church were appropriate and impressive. Rev. Irvine preaching the sermon, after which the remains were taken to the Great Northern station, followed by a large concourse of friends, and then taken on No. 6 to Devils Lake where services were held in the Presbyterian church this morning at 10 o'clock by General Crook Post, after which the body was interred in the cemetery at Devils Lake, which was the expressed wish of the deceased not long ago.

The mourning relatives have the sincere sympathy, of not only the people of this city, but of all those in Benson and Ramsey counties where he was so well known and respected.

Salome E Stevens Bisbee Williams- Newspaper Unknown

Mrs. Williams, 95, Died Here Early Thursday
Pioneer of Northwest Passed Away At Home of Niece, Mrs. Geo. Dickinson, Sr.

A pioneer of many frontiers, Mrs. Salome E. Williams, 95 passed away here early Thursday morning at the home of her niece Mrs. Geo. Dickinson, Sr. Death was due to infirmities of old age. Identified with Benson county since 1886, Mrs. Williams was well known throughout this section from territorial days. pioneering was no new experience to one who was born in an Indian mission in the days when Minnesota and Wisconsin were one territory; whose father established a church on the present site of the Twin Cities and whose sister, Julie Stevens Staples, was the first white child born in Minnesota.

She was familiar with hardship and trial and occupied a useful and valuable place in the life of the young community, as a wife, mother, teacher and civic leader. Her passing brings regret to those long associated with her, but they have the memory of a life, well-lived and a record of accomplishment to cherish.

Salome E. Williams was born at Prairie Du Chein, Wisconsin, the daughter of Jedediah Dwight Stevens, a pioneer in the mission field among the Indians of the northwest, the founder of a mission at St. Anthony Falls, where Minneapolis now stands, in the early part of the nineteenth century. He later moved with his family to Wisconsin. Here Mrs. Williams was born in a mission cabin on the banks of the river. Her childhood days were spent among the Indians and she had an intimate acquaintance with the life of a pioneer before railroads penetrated the northwest. She prepared for teaching and followed this profession in several eastern states. On May 18, 1876 she was married to Horace Bisbee at Beloit, Wisconsin. They made their home in Michigan where a daughter Marcia and a son Horace were born. The later died when a few years old.

The family came to North Dakota in 1876 and too a homestead four miles east of Brinsmade.

Mr. Bisbee died in December 1887. Two years later Mrs. Bisbee was married to J.B. Williams of Antelope Valley and they made their home four miles west of Oberon. Mr. Williams was county assessor and Mrs. Williams often accompanied him on his trips about the county.

Following the death of Mr. Williams in March 1900, she went to Grand Forks to live with her daughter Marcia, an instructor in the University. In 1912 Marcia became interested in the Lemke land colony in Mexico and her mother located at Concha, Sinaloa in the same year. The following year they were driven out by the Mexican revolution and took up their residence in California. Here they lived until Marcia's death, in 1918. Mrs. Williams returned to Benson county the following year and has since made her home with her niece, Mrs. George Dickinson, Sr., where death came peacefully Thursday morning.

Mrs. Williams will be remembered by many in the county as one of the first school teachers she taught in the Huffman and Stewart schools and later in West Antelope district. She was also an early day Sunday School leader.

Funeral services will be held at home of Geo. Dickinson, St. on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. In accordance with her request no church service will be held. Burial will be made in the local cemetery beside the bodies of her husband and daughter.

The passing of "Auntie Williams" leave vacant another place in the thinning ranks of the folks who built up the northwest. Hers was indeed a leading part but not for this alone will she be remembers, but for her kindly character and cheerful spirit, maintained throughout the vicissitudes and hardships of a truly pioneer life.
