Bertha Thompson Sandven-Benson County Farmers Press- Nov 30, 1994

The funeral for Bertha Sandven, 85, of rural York was held Tues. at 2 p.m. at St. Petri Lutheran Church, rural York.  Interment was in the church cemetery.  She died Nov. 25, 1994 at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby. Rev. Margaret Olson officiated.  Judy Randle was organist & Derek Thompson was soloist.  Pallbearers were Irving Thompson, Howard Thompson, George Thompson Anthony Thompson, Lawrence Axness & Erling Axness.  Honorary pallbearers were her grandchildren, Keith & Gregory Mitchell & John, Mark, Scott & Kelsie Volk.  The Nelson Funeral Home of Leeds was in charge of arrangements.

 Bertha Sandven was born Aug. 23, 1909 in Beaver Township of Benson County near York to Anton & Ingeborg Lokken Thomson.  She was educated at the township school.  She married Kristian L. Sandven Nov. 11, 1930 at St. Petri Lutheran Church, rural York.  They farmed south of York.  Kristian Sandven died Nov. 4, 1963.  She continued living on the farm until moving to the Haaland Home in Rugby in the fall of 1993. She was a lifelong member of St. Petri Lutheran Church, rural York, & its ladies aid.  She served as church organist for more than 40 years.

 Survivors include 3 daughters, Clarene Mitchell of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Lorraine Sandven of Tucson, Ariz & Ruth Volk of Tigard, Ore.; 6 grandchildren; & 3 great grandchildren.

 She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Oleanna Thompson; & 4 brothers, Clarence, Theodore, Alvin & Albert Thompson.,

Last Rites For K. L. Sandven Held November 7Funeral services for Kristian L. Sandven were conducted at the St. Petri Lutheran Church on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 2 p. m. with Pastor Richard Quamme officiating.  Interment was at the St. Petri cemetery. Mrs. Donald Fogelson was organist and accompanied Mrs. Oscar Erie, who sang "There's a Wideness in God's Mercy." The men's group, consisting of Howard and George Thompson, Harold Fragodt, Lawrence Axness, Floyd Allen, and P. B. Tufte, sang, "Softly and Tenderly, Jesus is Calling." Pallbearers were:  Kenneth Sandven, Olger Sandven, Lawrence Axness, Erling Axness, Orville Pierson, and Dr. R. Warren Pierson. Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Kristian L. Sandven, son of Lars and Karoline Sandven was born in Beaver Township on May 30, 1898. He was baptized by the Rev. E. L. Ovland and confirmed in the Lutheran faith by the Rev. Harold Farseth on Aug. 3, 1913.  He attended grade school in Beaver township and was a student at Concordia College for some time.  His entire life was spent in this community and he was a life time member of St. Petri congregation.  He served his church as treasurer for many years, succeeding his father in this capacity.  Civic duties were fulfilled as treasurer of Beaver township and a member of the local school board. He was married to Bertha Thompson on Nov. 22, 1930 at the St. Petri church by the Rev. Edward Erickson.  Three daughters wee born to this union:  Clarene, Mrs. Don Mitchell of Oakes; Lorraine, of Tucson, Ariz., and Mrs. Virgil Volk of Portland, Ore.  Also surviving are:  three grandsons, Keith and Gregory  Mitchell and John Patrick Volk; two sisters, Mrs. Ralph Pierson and Mrs. Bernt Axness; and one brother, K. Ester Henrietta Emelia Ahlberg Sexhus-Nelson Funeral Home website

Ester Sexhus,  108, of Cando formerly of rural Leeds,  died Saturday, April 27, 2013  at the Towner County Living Center in Cando.   Funeral services will be Saturday, May 4, 2013, 2:00 PM at North Prairie Free Lutheran Church rural Leeds with Pastor Michael Rohrer officiating.  Visitation will be Saturday at the church from noon until the time of the funeral.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.    Casket bearers will be her nephews:  Mark Ahlberg,  David Ahlberg,  Jerry Ahlberg,  Greg Anderson,  Gary Holthusen,  Steve Guthrie,  Alan Guthrie and Scott Guthrie.  Music will be from the Ahlberg Family.  The Nelson Funeral Home of Leeds is in charge of the arrangements.  

Ester Henrietta Emelia (Ahlberg) Sexhus was born March 15, 1905 at home in Springfield Township north of Leeds, ND, to David and Emelia (Nilson) Ahlberg.  She lived on the farm until the family moved to Seattle, WA in 1918.  Ester attended high school there and following graduation in 1922 from Lincoln High School, she came home to the farm.  After attending Valley City Normal College, Ester returned to the Ahlberg home and taught grades 1 thru 8 at the Wheatland Country School for eight years.  Ester and Sanford Sexhus were married January 26, 1939 at Leeds.  The couple lived and farmed the Sexhus Homestead rural Leeds.  Following Sanford’s death on January 1, 1993,  Ester lived on the farm until moving to the Towner County Living Center at Cando in 2008. 

Ester was a life member of North Prairie Free Lutheran Church where she served as organist for many years, taught Sunday school and was a member of the Ladies Aid.  She enjoyed church and school activities, family, socializing, reading, sewing and music.   

Surviving are a daughter:  Karen Beyer of Fargo and a son and daughter-in-law:  Dennis and Sue Sexhus of Leeds;  4 grandchildren:  Sandra (Kyle) Meyer of Hillsboro,  Steven (Kullen) Beyer of Brooklyn Park, MN,  Jessica (Kevin) Johnson of Ankeny, IA and Sam (Zoe) Sexhus of Southlake, TX;  9 great-grandchildren:  Katrina, Rachel & Thomas Meyer,  Laurel & Brooke Johnson,  Madeline & Mia Sexhus,  Thomas & Emelia Beyer. Preceding her in death were her parents;  daughter:  Sandra Sexhus; son:  Jimmie Ahlberg;  brother:  Ernest Ahlberg;  sisters:  Annabel Anderson,  Ida Guthrie,  Ruth Holthusen and Myrtle Ahlberg.

A Pioneer Passes Away
C.F. Schultz, a Veteran of the Civil War dies after a brief illness

Sunday morning this community was shocked to hear that C.F. Schultz had passed to the Great Beyond at 6:45, after an illness lasting only a week.

Mr. Schultz returned from the state encampment of the G.A.R. at Hillsboro, week before last, not feeling very well. As soon as he returned he went to visit his son, Otto, at Hurricane Lake. Soon after arriving there he began to feel worse, and concluded to come home. He was brought here and immediately took to his bed. Dr. Warren was summoned who found the patient suffering from a severe attack of inflammation of the bladder, whcih would not yield to the usual treatment. Dr. Sihler, of Devil's Lake, was called in consultation, and although everything was done that could be done, the patient grew rapidly worse and expired at the time stated above. The disease with which he was stricken would not of itself have proven fatal, but own to his old age and his weakened condition of his constitution, he had not the strength to withstand the attack.

Carl Friedrich Schultz was born May 12 1839 in Sachesberg, Prussia, and died Sunday, June 23, 1907, having just passed his 68th year. He came to America with is parents at the age of twelve, and settled in Wisconsin. Soon after the Civil War broke out he enlisted in Company B, 4th Wisconsin Regiment of Volunteers, at Ripon, Wis., and served three years. At the time he was mustered out he was first sergeant of his company, having served with distinction and honor through the many hard fought battles of that famous regiment. On December 10, 1965, he was married to Caroline Catherine Weisgerber at Ripon, Wis. who survives him. In 1865 he brought his family to Dakota territory and settled at Penn, Ramsey County, where he settled on a farm, and lived until 1904 when he moved to this city (Leeds).

Mr. Schultz was an unassuming man, approachable, sympathetic and kind. He was a loving husband and father, loyal to his friends, who were many, and indeed a model man and courteous gentleman. He was a member of the General Crook Post, No. 33, Devils Lake, the only society to which be belonged.

Besides his widow, who feels the loss of her life companion keenly, Mr. Schultz leaves to mourn his departure four sons, Mayor John O. Schultz and H.J. Schultz of this city (Leeds); Otto of Hurricane Lake; William A of Penn; two daughters, Mrs. Dingman of Penn, and Mrs. Dimm of Leavings, Alta., and one brother E.A. Schultz of Montello, Wis. and three sisters, Mrs. W.A. Hasse of Lincoln, Neb., Mrs. Paulien Day of Budsin, Wis., and Mrs. Krueger of Oshkosh, Wis., and twenty-four grandchildren.

The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church, yesterday afternoon and were attended by the friends of the deceased. The pall bearers were M.L. Strong, John Techtmann, H Henrietta, F.E. Wood, ... Howrey, and Nels Jacobson. The services at the church were appropriate and impressive. Rev. Irvine preaching the sermon, after which the remains were taken to the Great Northern station, followed by a large concourse of friends, and then taken on No. 6 to Devils Lake where services were held in the Presbyterian church this morning at 10 o'clock by General Crook Post, after which the body was interred in the cemetery at Devils Lake, which was the expressed wish of the deceased not long ago.

The mourning relatives have the sincere sympathy, of not only the people of this city, but of all those in Benson and Ramsey counties where he was so well known and respected.

Arthur “Art” Streifel, 86, of Esmond, ND, passed away peacefully on Thursday July 18, 2013, surrounded by his family at St. Aloisius Medical Center in Harvey, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, July 22, 2013, 10:30 AM at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Esmond, with Fr. Brian Bachmeier, celebrant.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be Sunday from 5 to 7pm with a 7:00 PM Rosary followed by a 7:30 PM Parish Vigil all in the church.  Lectors will be:  Robert Black,  Gary Dosch and Nancy Olson.  With a eulogy by Diane Peyerl.  Casket bearers will be his grandsons:  Justin Black,  Rob Black,  Jake Miller,  Scott Streifel,  Nathan Fix,  Jason Toso,  Jared Toso and Wyatt Toso.  Honorary bearers will be the members of the Nights of Columbus. Music will be from Helen Arnold, organist,  Marlys Fix & Jennifer Hagen, pianists;  Rosalie Axtman, Cantor;  the St. Boniface Choir;  Janice Toso, Katie Streifel and Kara Fix vocalists.

Arthur (Art) Streifel was born January 11, 1927 on the family farm in Esmond, ND, to Thomas and Katherine (Hager) Streifel.  Art grew up in the Esmond area and graduated from the Esmond Public School in 1945.  Following graduation, he worked on the family farm until June 8, 1948 when he married the love of his life, Agnes Neis, the daughter of Steve and Lena (Piatz) Neis.  Shortly after, they moved to Fargo, spending a couple winters working various jobs.  In 1952, they returned to Esmond to run a grain and cattle operation on the family farm.

Art enjoyed interacting with people of all ages.  A fine example of this is his many years as a school bus driver for over twenty years which he did in addition to farming and ranching.  In the early 1970’s, he began his career as a crop/hail adjuster until retiring in 2003.  Art and Agnes moved from the family farm into Esmond in the fall of 1992.

Art was a member of the Knights of Columbus 4^th Degree, the Eagles Club and Senior Citizens Club, a former member of  the Esmond School Board and Esmond Township Board where he served as the assessor.  He also served as an usher for many years at St. Boniface Catholic Church.  Art’s love for the outdoors was superseded only by his faith and love for family.  His eyes twinkled with joy whenever his children and grandchildren gathered.

He is survived by his wife:  Agnes of Esmond;  five children:  Linda (Robert) Black of Linton, ND,  Beverly (Michael) Jesser of West Fargo,  Kenneth (Diane) Streifel of Esmond,  Marlys (Blaine) Fix of Jamestown, and Janice (Todd) Toso of Harvey;  15 grandchildren:  Justin (Allison) Black,  Angela (Greg) Normandin,  Rob Black,  Melissa (Troy) Olsen,  Paul Schwab,  Brent Jesser,  Christie (Jesse) Klover,  Amy (Mike) Haldorson,  Scott Streifel,  Katie Streifel,  Nathan Fix,  Kara Fix,  Jason (Kayla) Toso,  Jared Toso and Wyatt Toso;  16 great-grandchildren:  Brody Black,  Mia Black,  Molly Normandin,  Jesse Miller,  Jacob Miller,  Ben Miller,  Isaiah Miller,  Jasmin Gonzales, Gavyn Olsen,  Odin Jesser,  Alyssa Klover,  Alexa Haldorson, Ava Haldorson, Ian Haldorson,  Olivia Haldorson and Grayson Toso, and a brother:  Walter Streifel of Harvey. He was preceded in death by his parents:  Thomas and Katherine;  sister:  Genevieve Olson;  2 infant sisters:  Otillia & Leona and a great-grandchild:  Gavin Klover.

Odlella Thompson Sturm - Benson County Farmers Press Oct 5, 1988

The funeral for Odella Sturm, 82, of Rugby, formerly of the York area, was held on Tues., Oct 4, at 11 a.m. from St. Petri Lutheran Church near York with Rev. Edward Bastedo officiating. Interment was at the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Bismarck. She died Sept 29 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Rugby.Special music was provided by Mrs. Diane Tufte and Mr. and Mrs. Own Randle. Pallbearers were Thomas Moller, Orville Pierson, Kenneth Sandven, Mike Strand, George Thompson, Marvin Thompson, Tony Thompson & Simon Whalen. The Nelson Funeral Home of Leeds was in charge of arrangements.Odella Thompson was born Dec. 22, 1905 on the family farm near York to Robert & Oline Muri Thompson. She grew up & attended school near York and later graduated from the Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in Rugby. Odella then worked for a time as a registered nurse in Colorado Springs, Colo. where she married Edward Sturm in 1931. They moved to North Dakota where Odella worked at the Mandan Hospital for a few years. He died in 1965. She retired in 1983 from her nursing position of 22 years at the Baptist Nursing Home in Bismarck & returned to York. for the past few years, Odella had been a resident of the Trinity Retirement Home in Minot & the Haaland Home in Rugby. She was a longtime member of the St. Petri Lutheran Church were she was baptized & confirmed.Survivors include a son, Robert of Minot; 2 grandchildren & a great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; & 3 brothers, Thilmer, Herman & Oscar.

Edward Sturm- Benson County Farmers Press- Mar 18 1965

Services Held for Ed Sturm at Bismarck

Edward G. Sturm, 84, died Friday night at his home in Bismarck. He had been ill about six weeks. Funeral services were held from Trinity Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, the Rev. M. F. Lutness officiating. Burial was in Sunset memorial Gardens.

 He was born in Columbus, Ind., on Feb. 1, 1881, a son of George and Caroline Rupchert. He attended schools in Knightstown, Ind., and married Odella Thompson on May 8, 1931, at Grand Junction, Colo. The couple came to North Dakota 33 years and to Bismarck 27 years ago. He attended Trinity Lutheran Church and had been an electrician. His last occupation had been as a maintenance man at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

He leaves his wife, at home; one son, Robert Sturm, at the K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base, Michigan, and one sister, Mrs. A. C. McGowan, Indianapolis, Ind.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and four sisters.

Ardith Evelyn Mickelson Straabe-Nelson Funeral Home website

Ardith Straabe, 94, of Leeds died Friday, March 15, 2013 at Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake. Funeral services will be Thursday, March 21, 2013, 1:00 PM at Leeds Lutheran Church with Pastor Richard Budd officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery later this spring.  Visitation will be Thursday at the church and hour before the service.  Music will be from by Lucia Jacobson, Mark Friestad and Bo Lauckner. Casket bearers will be Todd Straabe, Dan Straabe, Bo Lauckner, Jerome Bokn, Dean Johnson, and John Conway Sr..

Ardith Evelyn Mickelson was born Feb. 7, 1919 in York Township, to Oscar and Selma Wegge Mickelson. She was reared on the family farm north of Leeds in the Hurricane Lake area. She graduated from Leeds High School in 1936. In 1940 she married Thomas Straabe of Leeds. They farmed in the Leeds and York areas until moving to Leeds in 1945. She worked at the Leeds Creamery for awhile, but excelled as a salesperson. She sold Christmas ads for the Benson County Farmers Press a number of years, greeting cards, Raleigh products for over 50 years, but was best known as the Avon lady, which she sold for over 40 years. She was a dedicated worker, selling even after she moved into the ODD fellows home in Devils Lake at the age of 91. She was an Avon President's Club member many, many times. In March 2012, she moved into the Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake.

She became a member of the Leeds Lutheran Church and the Lydia Circle, after transferring from the Hurricane Lake Lutheran Church in 1955. She was a member for 65 years of the Leeds Auxiliary, joining in its first year. In July 2011 she was an honored guest in the Leeds 125th parade as the oldest living graduate of Leeds High School. 

She was preceded in death by her husband on Aug. 25, 1981; their son, Allen on Oct. 25, 2011; a brother, Orvis (Bud) Mickelson; a sister, Maxine Straabe; and her parents. Ardith is survived by her grandchildren: A. Todd (Julie) Straabe of Ruthville; Lisa Lauckner of Leeds, Daniel Straabe of Lisbon; Kyle A. Straabe of Bemidji, Minn. and Matthew (Carrie) Straabe of Grand Rapids, Minn.; 10 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Dagney Wang Sundell-Nelson Funeral Home website

Dagny Sundell, 97, of Marysville, WA, formerly of Maddock, ND, died Tuesday, December 18, 2012 in Marysville.  Funeral services were held in Arlington, WA on Friday, December 28, 2012.  Burial was Monday, December 31, 2012 at North Viking Lutheran Cemetery in Maddock with Pastor Allen Campbell officiating.

Dagny Wang was born December 21, 1914 in Maddock, ND to Olaus and Lottie (Evenhus) Wang.  She was educated at the Maddock Public School and the Benson County Agricultural and Training School.  On October 24, 1938, Dagny married Paul E. Sundell at North Viking Lutheran Church.  Following the election of Paul as sheriff of Benson County in 1943, the family moved to Minnewaukan.  The family later lived in Fargo, Mandan and Jamestown, ND.  In 1967, Dagny and Paul moved to Stanwood, WA.  The couple managed a motel near Anacortes, WA.  Paul Sundell passed away in 1973.  Dagny moved to Fargo and was employed at St. Luke’s Hospital for three years.  She then moved back to Washington to be near her family. 

Dagny was a member of the Lutheran Church and Moose Lodge.  She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, and was well known for her Lefse.

Surviving are her children:  Audrey Erickson of Marysville,  WA,  Paul (Karen) Sundell, Jr., of Yuma, AZ,  Cheryl (Ray) Hammer of Marysville, WA and Steven Sundell  of Federal Way, WA;  11 grandchildren;  24 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death was her husband:  Paul, Sr.,  granddaughter:  Stacy Murrietta;  brother  and sisters:  Olaf,  Hilma,  Sophie, Viola and Thora.

Sylvia Camilla Nyland Lysne Sundet-Nelson Funeral Home website

 Sylvia C. Sundet, 102, of Carrington, formerly of Maddock, died Thursday, April 11, 2013 at the Golden Acres Manor in Carrington, ND.  Funeral services will be Friday, April 19^th, 10:30 AM, at Viking Lutheran Church, rural Maddock, with Pastor Allen Campbell officiating.  Burial will be later in the church cemetery.  Her grandchildren will serve as casket bearers.  Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7pm at the  Nelson Funeral Home in Maddock.

Sylvia Camilla Nyland was born in Eldon Township, Benson County near Minnewaukan, ND on June 14, 1910 to Karl and Kristine (Olso) Nyland.  She was baptized in the West Minnewaukan Free Church by Pastor J.P. Leeland and was confirmed in Calvary Lutheran Church in Oberon.  Sylvia moved with her family to the Oberon community in the early 20’s.  She married Melvin Lysne in 1927 and to this union was born a son:  Robert.  In 1935 Sylvia was married to Carl J. Sundet at North Viking Lutheran Parsonage in Maddock by Pastor G.R. Estrom. 

The couple traveled Benson County for a time while Carl worked for the Benson County Highway Department.  They started farming in North Viking Township in 1939 and were both active members of Viking Lutheran Church.  Sylvia moved into St. Aloisius Senior Housing in 1998 while Carl was a resident in the St. Aloisius Medical Center Long Term Care.  He passed away in November of 1998.  Sylvia spent much of the following two summers between Harvey and their farm near Maddock.  Throughout the years she busied herself with baking, gardening, canning and embroidery work.  In later years she enjoyed playing games to pass the time.  Sylvia remained in Senior Housing in Harvey until late September 2008 when she moved to Golden Acres Manor in Carrington.

 She was preceded in death by her parents,  husband,  son,  two brothers and three sisters. Surviving are her daughter-in-law:  Helen Else of Jamestown;  grandchildren:  Larry Lysne (Sheila Dufford) of Fairbanks AK,  Glen Lysne (Jenine) of West Fargo,  Susan (Jim) Bond of Jamestown and Jo Lysne (Kevin Beach) of Carrington;  10 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

Edna Tandberg-Nelson Funeral Home website

Edna Tandberg, 94, of Baton Rouge, LA, formerly of Leeds, ND, died Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at a nursing home in Baton Rouge.  Funeral Services will be Wednesday, March 21, 2012,  2:00 PM at Leeds Lutheran Church with Pastor Richard Budd officiating.  Burial will be in the Leeds Lutheran Cemetery.  Music will be from:  MiChelle Nybo, soloist and Dan Nybo, organist.  Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7pm at the Nelson Funeral Home in Leeds.

Edna was born March 14, 1918 the daughter of Emil and Christina Lunde.  She attended school in Leeds and graduated from high school in Baker, ND.  As a housewife and mother, she was particularly skilled in sewing and crocheting, and loved to decorate for every holiday possible.  Many will remember her attendance at various bingo games throughout the area.  Her last years were spent in Baton Rouge where she lived at Whealdon Estates and Heritage House. 

 She is survived by her only child and son-in-law, Gerilyn Tandberg and Maurice Berger, and several nieces and nephews including: Elaine Peterick and Jill Quale of Minnesota, Gwen Bell of Arkansas, James Lunde of Washington and Roger Lunde of New York. Edna is preceded in death by her husband, Otto Tandberg; parents, Emil and Christina Lunde; four brothers, Clifford, Edward, Jalmar, and Alvin Lunde; and one sister, Gladys Erickson.

Funeral Held At St. Petri For Mrs. Moures Thompson, Long Time Resident Here

Funeral services for Mrs. Moures Thompson were held in the St. Petri Lutheran Church near York on Jan 25. She passed away at her home in York on Jan 21. Rev. R. H. Quamme officiated. Mrs. K. L. Sandven was organist and Mrs. Oscar Erie and Cleo Berven were soloists. Burial was in the St. Petri Cemetery. Active pallbearers were six grandson, Leroy Lokken of Tioga, Dennis Loken of Williston, Duane Bokn of Devils Lake, Clair and Dennis Thompson of York and Roger Huffman of Minnewaukan. Honaray pallbearers were K. B. Sandven, R. J. Pierson, Hans Halvorson, Roald Nybo, Emmett Whalen and Hubert Bock of York, and Dr. A.B. Lund, Arne Gregor and B. E. Axness of Leeds.

Mrs. Thompson was born at Benson, Minn., on Jan. 13, 1878. Her parents were Anders and Barbara Thorseth. She was baptized and confirmed in the St. Pauli Lutheran Church at Swift Falls, Minn. She attended school in that community. She was married to Moures Thompson Jan. 16, 1904 at the Lutheran parsonage at Knox. They lived on their farm in Beaver Township until they moved to York in the fall of 1946. She was a member of the St. Petri Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid.

 Her husband survives along with six daughters, Mrs. John Loken (Olga) of Epping, N.D.; Mrs. Bernice Huberty and Mrs. Harold Berven (Hazel) of York; Mrs. Louis Bokn (Myrtle) of Devils Lake, Mrs. Eli Huffman (Lila) and Alive Thompson of Minnewaukan, and one son, Marvin, who resides on the home far; three brothers, Andrew and Alfred Thorseth of Epping and Melvin Thorseth of Glenwood, Minn.,; 16 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Theodore Thorseth of Epping and one granddaughter, Carol Berven of York.

Anthon Thompson Services Held

Anton Thompson, age 79, long time resident of Beaver Township, who spent the last four years in Leeds, died of heart complications June 8 in the Good Samaritan Hospital at Rugby, North Dakota. He married Ingeborg Loken on August 13, 1902. To this union six children were born, four boys and two girls. Two sons preceded him in death. He is survived by his widow, two sons and two daughter, Theodore and Alvin both of Beaver Township, Mrs. K.L. Sandven of Beaver Township and Oleanna of Leeds. His brothers are  Robert Moures and Halsten. He has just one sister, Mrs. Rachel Strand.

Anthon  settled in Beaver Township, where he expanded his farming interests. He was a member of the St. Petri Congregational Church and served on the board of trustees. He also served many years on the school and township boards.

The funeral service was held in the St. Petri Church, June 8 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Edward Erickson and Rev. M.J. Nilsen were the ministers. Funeral arrangements were made by the Johnson Funeral Home in Leeds, North Dakota

Arvid Thompson-St. Cloud Times- May 23, 2006

Arvid T. Thompson, 77 

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2006 at the St. Cloud V.A.M.C. Chapel, for Arvid T. Thompson.  An additional memorial service will be held at St. Petri Church in Leeds, ND on Saturday, May 27 at 2 p.m.  Arvid T. Thompson, 77, died peacefully in St. Cloud, on Thursday, May 18, 2006.  He was born in Rugby, ND to Theodore and Hannah Thompson.  Arvid was raised on the family farm in Benson County ND.  After high school he attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.  In 1951 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War.  In 1955 he returned to North Dakota to work for Armor & Co. Meats and continued in the meat industry in various locations until 1975.  Then he began working as a Human Service Technician in the Duluth area until retirement in 1991.  Arvid has spent his retirement years in St. Cloud devoting much of his time volunteering at the V.A. Hospital.  He was especially proud of the services he provided in the Alcoholic Anonymous programs.  Arvid’s kindness and compassion for others will be missed by the many lives he has touched.

Arvid is survived by his daughter, Nancy Thompson of Woodbury; sons: Bradley (Lynn) of Duluth; Bruce of Harrisonburg, VA; brothers: Irving (Janice) of Devils Lake, ND; George (Inger) of Leeds, ND; sisters: Delores (Carl) Sudbrink of Glenwood; Janice Nelson of Fargo, ND; sister-in law Bonnie Thompson of Bisbee, ND; and seven grandchildren, Troy, Heather, Angela, Alyssa, Sean, Hannah, and Brooke. Arvid is preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Arden and Howard.

Funeral Services Held for Beaver Twsp. Resident

Funeral services were conducted at the St. Petri Church, Rev. Edward Erickson officiating, on Tuesday, Jan. 12 for Clarence Thompson, 35, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Thompson of Beaver township. Ill health for some time, attributed to the cause of his death, which occurred Jan 8th. A choir consisting of A.E. Tufte, Adolph, Sgt. P.B. Tufte, Mrs. and Mrs. Oscar Erie, Misses Burnell Axness, Signe Sandven and Ruda Tufte, sang "Rock of Ages" at the services at the house and " There's a Wildness in God's Mercy" and "Abide with Me" at the church. They were accompanied by Miss Ella Krogstad. A large number of memorial wreaths were given to charitable organizations and to the missions in the memory of the deceased. Oscar Erie, Kenneth Sandven, Olof Solberg, Orville Pierson, Harold Berven and Leif Tolo acted as pallbearers. Coming from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Johnson, Maddock, Miss Malene Mure and Maynard Blegen and Fred Rognlie, Churches Ferry, Mr. and Mrs.Art Solberg, Brinsmade, and Torvald Thompson, Benson, Minn.

Clarence Bernhard Thompson was born July 11, 1907, in Beaver township. He was baptized by Rev. J. J. Strandess on the 28th day of July and confirmed Oct 9, 1921, by Rev. P.J. Mykland. He was a life time member of the St. Petri congregation, also a member of the Luther League and attended services regularly. He leaves to mourn his loss, his parents, two brothers, Theodore living nearby and Alvin now in the United States Army service, stationed at Camp Adair, Oregon; two sisters, Oleanna at home and Bertha, Mrs. K.L.Sandven, living nearby. Another brother, Albert preceded him in death. Clarence will be greatly missed in his home and in the community. He was a kind friend, industrious, quiet and unassuming. Always a devoted son and brother, his foremost thought were for the welfare of others. And now may the Lord watch between thee and me, while we are absent one from the other.

Funeral Held At St. Petri Church for Mrs. Ingeborg Thompson of Leeds

Funeral services for Mrs. Ingeborg Thompson, 79, of Leeds, who died Aug. 27 at the Good Samaritan hospital in Rugby after a short illness, were held Aug 30 from St. Petri Lutheran church with the Rev. M.J. Nilsen officiating. Internment was in St. Petri cemetery. Music was furnished by Mrs. Donald Fogelson, organist, Mrs. Oscar Erie and Royce LaGrave soloists, and a men's quartet composed of Floyd Allen, Lawrence Axness, Harold Frogodt and Paul B Tufte. Pallbearers were Thilmer, Thorvald, Jay and Marvin Thompson, Galen Strand and Olaf Solberg.

Ingeborg Janika Loken was born March 26, 1879 at Olden, Nordfjord, Norway. Her parents were Kristain and Britha Loken. She was baptized and confirmed in the Olden Lutheran church and attended the folk school of the community. In 1898 she came to Churchs Ferry with her sister, Agnes, now Mrs. Kirkeide, to the home of their cousin, Bent Muri. She was employed there and at various homes in the community and homesteaded on land near Nanson, N.D. She was married to Anthon Thompson on Aug. 13, 1902 at his homestead in Beaver township by the Rev. J.J. Strandness. They improved and expanded their farm until their retirement in 1947 when they moved to Leeds. Mrs. Thompson was a member of the St. Petri Lutheran church and Ladies Aid. After moving to Leeds her church membership was transferred to the Leeds Evangelical Lutheran church. She was a member of Sunshine circle. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1951 and two sons, Clarence and Albert. Survivors are two sons, Theodore and Alvin of Beaver township and two daughters, Mrs. K.L. (Bertha) Sandven of Beaver and Oleanna of Leeds; three sisters, Mrs. Agnes Kirkeide of Churches Ferry, Mrs. Olina Solberg of Leeds, and Mrs. Johanne Yri of Olden, Nordforjd, Norway, one brother Ole K. Loken also of Olden, 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Marvin C. Thompson- Devils Lake Journal 17 Jun 1999

Marvin C. Thompson, 81, of Devils Lake and formerly of rural York, ND, died Wednesday, June 16, 1999 at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake.

 Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Petri Lutheran Church, rural York with Pastor Betty J. Stedman officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be Friday from 2 until 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Prayer Service at the Nelson Funeral Home in Leeds and Saturday at the church an hour before the service.  Casket bearers will be Laurence Axness, George Thompson, Dr. Warren Pierson, Gene Larson, Elvin Randle, Don Nybo, Owen Blegen, Paul Tufte, Oscar Erie, Vern Wurgler and Tony Thompson.

Marvin Clifford Thompson was born February 6, 1918, on the family farm in Beaver Township, Benson County rural York, to Moures and Christine (Thorseth) Thompson.  He was also raised and educated in Beaver Township.  Marvin Married Lyda Stave on Dec. 27, 1942 near Leeds.  They lived and farmed on his family homestead until retiring and moving to Devils Lake in 1997.

Marvin was baptized, confirmed and a life member at St. Petri Lutheran Church rural York.  He also served on the St. Petri Lutheran Church council, the Beaver Township Board and Leeds School Board.  He was also a member of the Farmers Union and the Devils Lake Elks.  Marvin enjoyed his family, playing the violin and being with children.  Several neighborhood children also called him "Grandpa".

 He is survived by his wife, Lyda of Devils Lake; two sons and daughters-in-law, Clair and Patti Thompson of Grand Forks, Dennis and Judy Thompson of Devils Lake; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Owen Randle of Minot; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two sisters, Bernice Huberty of Minot, Myrtle Bokn of Devils Lake and a number of nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Olga Lokken, Hazel Berven, Alice Thompson and Lila Huffman and a granddaughter.

Services for Moures Thompson Held June 19

The funeral for Moures Thompson, 88, was at 2 Saturday in St. Petri Lutheran Church, rural York. Rev. Richard Quamme officiating. He died Wednesday in an area hospital. Mrs. Oscar Erie was soloist and sang “Den Store Hvide Flok” and “How Great Thou Art” with Mrs. Bertha Sandven as accompanist. Interment was in the family plot in St. Petri Cemetery. Pallbearers were Roald Nybo, Lawrence Axness, P. B. Tufte, Kenneth Sandven, Orville Pierson and Herbert Whalen.

 He was born Sept 1, 1876, at Benson, Minn., and homesteaded at York in 1902. He married Anna Kristine Thorseth Jan. 16, 1904. He leaves five daughters, Mrs. Joh (Olga) Lokken, Epping, N.D.; Mrs Bernice Huberty, York; Mrs. Louis (Mrytle) Bokn, Devils Lake; Alice Thompson and Mrs. Eli (Lila) Huffman, both Minnewaukan; and one son, Marvin, of York; two brothers, Robert of Rugby and Halsten of York, sixteen grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, four brothers, two sisters, one daughter and one granddaughter.

Oleanna Thompson- Benson County Farmers Press

The funeral for Oleanna Thompson, 82, Rugby Haaland Home resident & formerly of the Leeds & York areas, was held on Mon., May 11at 11 a.m. from St. Petri Lutheran Church of rural York with Rev. Ed Bastedo officiating.  Internment followed in the church cemetery.  She died, Fri., May 8 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Rugby. Organist was Mrs. Owen (Judy) Randle.  Other special music was provided by Irving Thompson, Miss Signe Thompson & Derek Thompson.  Nephews acting as pallbearers were Anthony, Arvid, Derek, George, Howard, Irving, Terry & Tom Thompson.  The Nelson Funeral Home of Leeds was in charge of arrangements. Oleanna Thompson was born April 9, 1905 in Beaver Township of Benson County to Anthon & Ingeborg Loken Thompson.  She was reared & received her elementary education in Beaver Township southeast of York.  She also attended school in Harlow & graduate d from the Benson County Agricultural & Training School at Maddock in 1923.  Oleanna then attended the Minot Normal School to receive her teaching certificate & later taught for several years at rural schools in Beaver Township.  From 1930 until 19 47, she lived on the family farm with the exception of 2 winters in Oregon & California.  She moved into Leeds in 1947 to reside with her parents & had worked as a clerk at Petsinger's Dept. Store in Leeds until her retirement in the early 1970's . Since December of 1983, Oleanna had resided at the Haaland Home in Rugby. She was a longtime member of St. Petri Lutheran Church were she was baptized and confirmed.  She was also affiliated with the Leeds Lutheran Church during her residence in Leeds. Survivors include her sister, Bertha Sandven of rural York. She was preceded in death by her parents & 4 brothers, Theodore, Clarence, Alvin & Albert Thompson.

Funeral Held At St. Petri For Theodore Thompson, Victim Of Heart Attack

Funeral services were conducted August 4 in the St. Petri Lutheran Church for Theodore Thompson, 59, lifetime resident of the rural York area, who died Wednesday morning, August 1, at the Good Samaritan Hospital following a heart attack Tuesday evening.  Pastor R.H. Quamme officiated.  Music was furnished by Mrs. Oscar Erie, soloist, and Mrs. Donald Fogelson, organist. Pallbearers were Harold Berven, Leif Tolo, Oscar Erie, Roald Lysne and Carl Solberg.  Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Theodore Oliver Thompson was born June 26, 1903, in Beaver Township.  He was baptized and confirmed in St. Petri Lutheran Church, where he continued membership until his death.  He was active in church and community and was, at the time of his death, a trustee of the St. Petri Church, a member of the Parish Brotherhood, a director of the Farmers Union Elevator Company in Harlow and a director on the Beaver Township board.  He served many years as clerk of Beaver School District and also as township assessor. Survivors include his wife, the former Hannah Sandven, whom he married June 26, 1926, at Milan, Minnesota; four sons, Arvid of Duluth, Minnesota, Howard of Baker, Irving of Devils Lake, George of York; two daughters, Delores, Mrs. James Johnson of York, Janice of Fargo; two sisters, Oleanna of Leeds and Bertha, Mrs. K.L. Sandven of York, and one brother, Alvin of York. There are six grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a son, Arden, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anthon Thompson, and two brothers, Clarence and Albert.
