The Carolinas Genealogical Society is a nonprofit organization chartered in 1964 by the North Carolina Secretary of State. Union County was formed in 1842 from portions of Anson and Mecklenburg Counties. The area known as Union County was settled as early as the first decades of the 18th century. Before the colonists moved into Union County, the area had been inhabited by the Waxhaw and Catawba Indian tribes. Research indicates that the area which is known as the Sandy Ridge and Jackson Townships were the first townships in Union County to be permanently settled by the English and Scotch Irish.
