THE YOUNGBLOOD FAMILY OF MECKLENBURG COUNTY

John F. Youngblood, b. 1874 and his wife, Virginia Irene Byrum, b. 1882 of Steele Creek Township had nine children, eight still living in Mecklenburg County. The oldest child, Mildred, who died at age 90 in 1994, married Thomas M. Blackwelder. Quay married Lucille Whitesides; J. Franklin, Jr., married Lillian Eplee; Frel B. married Martha (Peggy) Penninger; Lester married Martha Stoner; Jane married Frank Hager; Robert married Frances Rimmer; Pauline (Polly) married Monroe Neel; and Hannah married Edward Carmody.

John was the son of Thomas Theodore Youngblood, b. 1830 in York County, SC and Mary Jane Lucinda Lathan b. 1840 . The eleven children of this couple were: Samuel Hutchinson married Katherine Mae Boyd. Sam and Kate lived on Pine Street in Charlotte and he ran a grocery store. David Calvin married Sarah Jane Draffin and he was a contractor in Florida. Nancy Elizabeth married John Isaac Blakely and lived in Charlotte. William Pressley married first to Lucy Smarr and after her death married Ora Kirkpatrick and he was a mail carrier in Sharon, SC. Thomas Erskine married first to Catherine McLaughlin and after her death married second to Margaret Tatum and lived in Charlotte until his death. Margaret Jane married John L. Rea and lived on Rea Road in the Providence area. John F. above, was a farmer in Steele Creek. James Martin married Nannie R. Ferguson from Nannie’s mountain in York Co., SC. James was a Charlotte policeman for 10 years and became Chief of Police in Rock Hill, SC. Emma Parks married William Abernathey and died in childbirth. Sarah Anna, died at age two. The last child, Mary Leslie, never married and lived with John Youngblood’s family in Steele Creek. T. T. Youngblood’s home, at the end of Youngblood Road, was taken by Duke Power when Lake Wylie was made. T. T. Youngblood was the son of Richard Calvin Youngblood, b. 1797 and Nancy Hannah Lessley. Richard Calvin from York Co., SC , purchased the old Mason farm on the Catawba River in Mecklenburg County in 1851. R.C. and Hannah had six children: Robert Henry, died young; Winny Ann Millen who died in child birth of first child; William Orren died young; Thomas Theodore; Samuel Chesley married Mary Olvia Choate died in the Civil War; and Hannah Catherine married Elias Garrison of Steele Creek. Richard Calvin’s home was near the (now) Red Fez Club on the old Charlotte-Yorkville Road.

Richard Calvin was the son of Willliam M. Youngblood, b. 1763 and first wife Winnifred Nall of Johnston County, NC. They had seven children and after Winnifred’s death in Lincoln County, William married 2nd to Anna Brimer of Lincoln County and had seven more children. They are buried at Bethel Presbyterian Church in York County, SC.

William M. was the son of Henry Miles Youngblood, b. 1729 in Baltimore County, MD moving to Johnston County with his family prior to 1744. Henry was the son of John Miles Youngblood, b. 1708 and Mary Coale of Baltimore County, MD. John was the son of Thomas Youngblood, b. abt 1683 in Gunpowder Hundred, Baltimore County, MD.
