ARMOUR 

The early Armour family settled on the "south" side of the Catawba River about 1750. Armour's Creek named for this family was what (after the flooding for Lake Wylie) is now known as Wither's Cove. Many early deeds of Steele Creek in the area around now Shopton Road West and Westinghouse Blvd., and farther south of that intersection are described as being on Armour's Creek and/or Armour's Ford.

Deeds for this family first show up in Anson County (prior to Mecklenburg being formed) as follows:

1 & 2 July 1755, John Thomas & wife Jean to James Armor lease & release land on South side of Catawba on a small creek between Allison Creek and Crowders Creek adj. James Campbells land - 600 acres granted to Thomas 28 March 1755

16 July 1752: Robert McCappen & Barbara his wife of Anson to James Armor of same 315 Acres which said Armor now lives (lease & release) Va money on John Price's corner, Alex Cathey's corner granted to McCappen 4 Oct 1751

1 & 2 July 1755: James & Jennet Armor sold 300 acres on the south side of Catawba to Wm. Alexander granted to Armor 29 Sept 1750

24-30 Aug 1755: James Armor & wife Jannet to Dennis Dyer of Rowan ..land on S. side of Catawba 290 acres granted to John Larger (land adj. John Larger?) on 25 Sept 1754

Book 1, p. 229-232 8 & 9 Sept 1756: 2 tracts William Alexander of Rowan Co. to Wm. Steven of same..2 tracts on south side of Catawba granted to JAMES ARMOR 9 Sept 1750 conveyed to to William Alexander 2 July 1755 - 300 acres. 1 - 15 acres granted to George Cathey 29 Mar 1753 conveyed to said Alexander on 17 July 1755. Wit: John Davidson and Henry Hendry

Book B., p. 378: 9 & 10 Dec 1754. John Arnol Pender, Mill carpenter & Wm. Ardrey both of Anson to James Armour of same, Miller, land on both sides of Camp Creek E. side of Catawba River 400 acres granted to Pender & Audry 6 Mar 1754 Wits: Andrew Pickens & James Patton..

Bk. 4, p. 271-272: 28 Aug 1767 James Armour & wf Jennet of Meck to James Alcorn of same, for lb 26 proc. Money…land on south side of Catawba on the south branch of Beaver Dam Creek adj. James Campbell., 400 acres part of a tract granted to sd. James Armour by Andrew Armour. Wits: John McCulloh, Thomas Neel, James Davis. Prov. Jan term 1768.

Book 4, p. 542: 21 May & 1 June 1769, Thomas Polk of Meck to John White of Rowan Co. for 200 acres on E side Catawba River "Between Widder Amours and the Catawba Indians District" granted to sd polk 9 Nov 1764 Wits: William Oore, Joseph Kennedy.

Vol. 5, p. 198: 12 & 13 Oct 1770: Moses Ferguson & wf Martha of Tryon Co., NC and Samuel Knox and wf Mary of Meck, to Francis Johnston and Joseph Jonston, both late of Meck…400 acres on East side of Catawba River and SE side of path leading from Jean Armour's to the Catawba Nations, patented 4 Apr 1765.. Wits: Thos. Neely, Hugh Neely, Alexander Johnston. Recorded Oct term 1770.

Vol 1, p. 80: 15 Dec 1762: Rees Price & wf Sarah of Anson Co., to Matthew Nox (Knox) of same, land on E. side of Catawba River, near land formerly granted to James Armour and near an old Indian path, granted to sd Price 3 Apr 1753. Wits: Thomas Price, Richard Barry and Ann Barry.

Vol 1, p. 550: 18 Apr 1764: Andrew Armour of Meck, planter to James Armour…land on S. side of Catawba River between Croders Creek & Allison Creek granted to John Thomas 28 Mar 1755, conveyed to James Armour, dec'd…adj. James Campbells land..(no wife signed with Andrew..which indicates either he was not married or was a widower). Wits: Samuel Bigham, Moses Ferguson, Robert Leeper

Vol. 1, p. 592: 18 Apr 1764: Andrew Armour of Meck to James Armour, Meck, beginning at a walnut standing on the bank of ye Cataba River…patented to James Armour 6 April 1753… Wit: Samuel Bigham, Moses Ferguson & Robert Leeper.

Vol. 2, p. 573: 16 Jan 1765: James Armour of Meck to Andrew Armour of same, for 50 lbs. proc. Money..land on E. side Catawba granted to __Armour dec'd on 6 Apr 1753. 640 acres. Wits: Moses Ferguson and Robt. Harris.

Vol 2, p. 361: 12 Jan 1764: Isabel E. stevens, widow of William E. Stevens, decd, & Andrew Allison & William Lucky Exrs: to Estate of sd. William E. Stevens of Rowan Co. to Thomas Price of Meck…his Last Will & Test. Dated 30 Oct 1762 300 acres on S. Side Catawba granted to James Armour 29 Sept 1750 & conveyed to William Alexander 17 Mar 1753 & then to sd Wm. E. Steven 8 Sept 1756.. Wits: Thomas Black, Adam Allison & Elizabeth Allison.

Other deeds refer to old James Armour of the 1750s and Andrew & James Armour of the 1760s and 1770s.

ARMOURS FORD WAS NEAR THE MOUTH OF ARMOUR CREEK AND JUST ABOVE WHERE THE SOUTH FORK OF THE CATAWBA COMES INTO THE CATAWBA RIVER. LATER, THE PRICE FAMILY HAD A FERRY NEAR THE FORD.

P. 2: A deed of sale from Andrew Armour to Andrew Patrick dated 5th of Feb 1769 for 145 acres of land proved by Andrew Goforth. April term 1769

April Term 1769: Andrew Armour served on Grand Jury

p.63: April term 1771: A deed of Sale from James Armour, James Alcorn & Katharine Alcorn to Wm. Armstrong dated the 9th day of April 1771 for 400 acres of land proved by Francis Armstrong.

p. 80: Oct. Term 1771: John Armour served on Petty Jury.
