Inman Chapel Union Church
Inman Chapel Union Church Cemetery
Hightower RoadHaywood County, NC
Surveyed May 13, 2000 by Rebecca Howell
Take Hwy. 276 to Lake Logan Road (Hwy. 215).
Take Lake Logan Road to Friendly House Road on the right, turning immediately
onto Hightower Road on the left. The cemetery is behind Inman Chapel Union
Church and is visible from Lake Logan Road, Friendly House Road, and Hightower
Road.
This cemetery is very well maintained and surrounded by a chainlink
fence. There are quite a few graves with unreadable or fieldstone markers in this
cemetery. I have listed those as "unknown."
There is one grave outside the cemetery fence with a large carved stone
marker with no name or dates. Typically in this region, suicides were buried
outside the cemetery gates in unmarked graves. This is a tradition carried over
from Europe of burying suicides in "unblessed ground". I don't know that this is
the case here, but it does seem to follow that tradition.
No person is ever truly dead until the last person forgets to
remember them.
Starting with the first row inside the
gate. Starting at the bottom and moving toward the top, then second row back to
the bottom, etc.
