Her defense was that she had visited Mr. Poore during the course of his absence, resulting in her pregnancy and that the baby was premature. Her mother, Mrs. Mary Covington testified that on the 9th of November 1860, Mrs. Poore went to visit her husband and was not in the family way when she left. Mrs. Covington, who had attended the birth, testified that the baby had no fingernails or toenails, did not eat for four days following birth and did not cry for one month and slept almost all the time.
8/17/1861   Rebecca Slayton appeared as a witness for Mrs. Poore. She testified that she was at Mrs. Poore’s house and had been living there for several months, slept in the same bed with Mrs. Poore and knew that she was not “in the family way” when she went to visit her husband, Mr. Thomas Poore. She accompanied him to the wedding of his nephew John Poore. She further testified that she had never seen anything wrong or improper in Mrs. Poore’s conduct. She saw the letter from Thomas Poore and the $15 that was enclosed. She was present at the baby’s birth and it was her opinion that the baby was a seven months baby. She testified that Mrs. Poore left to visit her husband on a Monday in November. She testified that the baby weighed six pounds without clothing and eight pounds with clothing.
8/23/1861 The logbook for the stagecoach was produced showing that the date Mrs. Poore left Milton was November 12th, 1860. This was six months and 23 days before the birth of the child. The session ruled against Mrs. Poore and excluded her from the church based on the evidence against her.

Its material prosperity has been destroyed—its members scattered. The health of the pastor has also been too delicate to permit him to do the full work of the ministry. 7/26/1887   Out of order in session minutes book) “Session met in the office of Mr. N. M. Lewis. Present: Mr. N. M. Lewis, Dr. Wilson, Thomas Stamps, F. U. Faucette and W. L. Stamps. Opened with Prayer. The session having learned that Benjamin Hines a member of this session departed this life on the 16th of this month (July) adopted the subjoined minutes as expression of their views and feelings on the occasion.
Whereas it has pleased Almighty God to remove by Death on the 16th instant our beloved Brother Benjamin Hines for more than fifty five years a Member of the Church and for thirty six year a Ruling Elder in the same, the Session of this church duly assembled, desire to bear testimony to his consistency and worth as a Christian man and to his fidelity and stewardship as a Christian Elder.

While they mourn over their loss in his death, they do not presume to question the wisdom or the loving kindness of our Heavenly Father in taking him away. They rather find a special cause for gratitude in the goodness which spared him so long and gave him so large a share of bodily health and still more in that converting grace which brought him in early life to a saving knowledge of the truth as it is in Christ and thus inclined to enable him to spend so many years in the service of his divine Lord and Master.

They would especially bear witness to his modest worth, to his forgetfulness of self and his consideration for the comfort and feelings of others, to his clear conceptions of Truth and duty and to his steadfastness in maintaining the same. For these qualities and further for his sweetness of temper, his kindness of heart, his honesty of purpose, for his constant and punctual attendance upon the services of the sanctuary and for his habitual reverence and devotedness in the house of God, this Session would especially commend him as an example worthy to be followed.

They pray that the great Head of the Church will raise up another in his place, who shall follow him as he followed Christ.

By resolution a Copy of the above Minutes was directed to be sent to the family of the deceased and also copies to be sent to our local paper and the North Carolina Presbyterian with request that they publish the same. Session adjourned with prayer.
.W. L. Stamps, Clk.”

“Whereas since the last meeting of the session of this church it hath pleased our Heavenly Father to remove by death our Brother John Wilson from his earthly home to, as we trust, the Heavenly fold, it becomes us who remain to record as we bear testimony to his worth and usefulness.

Therefore, be it resolved:
1st. That in Dr. Wilson we have a bright example of what the grace of God can do in softening, refining and forming the pure man; that in Dr. Wilson we can see what Religion can do in making the upright citizen, the kind and loving husband, the tender and affectionate Father and the meek and Christian soldier. Dr. Wilson was a man of Prayer. He had a near access in his supplication at a throne of Grace and was gifted in releating [sic] the promises of God and trusted that God would give him whatever he asked in accordance with the Will of God. Dr. Wilson was ready at all times to bow the knee to God whether at home or in the sanctuary or by the bed side of the sick.
2nd. That we hold in kind remembrance his gentleness, kindness of greeting and readyness [sic] in discharge of duty, that we shall endeavor to emulate him as far as he followed Christ, that as individuals and as a body we will strive to gain an entrance into the Celestial City, that when that great company which no man can number shall stand before the throne of God, that when we have on the pure white robes of Christ’s righteousness upon us and may be welcomed to a seat on the right hand of God, when we shall dwell forever more and there shall be no more sorrow and no more tears, blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.
3rd. That this minute and resolution be sent to the Family of our deceased Brother and to the North Carolina Presbyterian to be published.
Begun and closed with prayer. W. L. Stamps, Clerk”

To Session f Milton Church
Dear Brethren,
By special order of Presbytery at its recent meeting, I am directed to remind you again of the greatly embarrassed condition of our Treasury and the amount of your arrearages.
It seems for the Treasurer’s report that Milton Church has not paid its Presbyterian assessment for three years which at $12 per year amounts to $36.
Will you please endeavor to raise the amount and forward at once to Mr. E. S. Moore, Greensboro, NC.
Truly and fraternally yours
H. T. Darnall [formerly pastor of the church]
Stated Clerk
11/28/1900 Miss Maggie McCain dismissed to Methodist Church, Raleigh, NC.
