Ruby E. Smith Kirby, 87, of Hudson, died Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Kirby was born in Caldwell County to the late Avery Smith and Mahalia Hass Smith.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Kirby; two sons, James and Roger Kirby; a daughter, Carolyn Kirby; two brothers, James and Troy Smith; three sisters, Mary Seagle, Ruth Benfield and Tula Benfield.
She was retired from Shuford Mills and a member of Temple Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Marshall Kirby and Benny Kirby, both of Hudson; two daughters, Phyllis Sumpter of Granite Falls and Brenda Sanders of Lenoir; a sister, Mable Wheeling of Granite Falls; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
The family would like to say a special thank you to her caregiver, Sharon Hodges.
A funeral service will be held Friday, March 12, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Temple Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Darrell Hatchell officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday, March 11, 2010, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Pendry�s Funeral Home.
Serving as pallbearers will be Tim Kirby, Donnie Kirby, David Kirby, Bryan Sanders, Dereck Crump and Eric Parsons.
The family requests that memorials be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, NC 28645.
