November Term of the 1792 Court of Pleas and Quarters Sessions for Bertie County
An excellent resource describing the Militia as a modern day "guerilla" force is:
"Washington's Partisan War 1775-1783" by Mark V. Kwasny (Kent
State Press: 1996). Washington depended
heavily on local militia to help him hang on and eventually win the War.
Their importance was also due to the inadequacy of the Continentals who, although full time, and usually signed up for 3
years, because of late pay and very poor equipment, were never the strength needed by Washington. This also resulted in regiments being merged with one another mainly due to lack of recruits.
The local militias thus saved the day as they were available when the fighting came to a specific location. When the battle was over, the militia returned home to their farms and family.
Resolved, That the officers of each company be chosen by the respective
companies.
Resolved, That each soldier be furnished with a good musket, that will
carry an ounce ball, with a bayonet, steel ramrod, worm, priming wire
and brush fitted thereto, a cutting sword or tomahawk, a cartridge-box,
that will contain 23 rounds of cartridges, twelve flints and a knapsack.
Resolved, That the companies be formed in regiments or battalions,
officered with a colonel, lieutenant colonel, two majors, and adjutant,
and quarter master.
Resolved, That all officers above the rank of captain be appointed by
their respective provincial assemblies or conventions, or in their
recess, by the committees of safety appointed by said assemblies and
conventions.
Resolved, that all the Militia take proper care to acquire military
skill, and be well prepared for defense by being each man provided with
one pound of good gun powder, and four pounds of ball, fitted to his
gun.
Resolved, That one fourth part of the militia of every colony be
selected for minute men, of such persons as are willing to enter into
this necessary service, formed into companies and battalions, and their
officers chosen and commissioned as aforesaid, to be ready on the
shortest notice, to march to any place where their assistance may be
required for the defense of their own or a neighboring colony; and as
these minute men may eventually be called to action before the whole
body of the militia are sufficiently trained, it is recommended that a
more particular and diligent attention be paid to their instruction in
military discipline.
Resolved, That such of the minute men, as desire it, be relieved by new
draughts as aforesaid, from the whole body of the militia, once in four
months.
Resolved, As there are some people, who, from religious principles,
cannot bear arms in any case, this Congress intend no violence to their
consciences, but earnestly recommend it to them, to contribute liberally
in this time of universal calamity, to the relief of their distressed
brethren in the several colonies, and to do all other services to their
oppressed country, which they can consistently with their religious
principles.
Resolved, that it be recommended to the assemblies or conventions in the
respective colonies to provide, as soon as possible, sufficient stores
of ammunition for their colonies; also that they devise proper means for
furnishing with arms, such effective men as are poor and unable to
furnish themselves.
Resolved, that it be recommended to each colony to appoint a committee
of safety, to superintend and direct all matters necessary for the
security and defense of their respective colonies, in the recess of
their assemblies and conventions.
Resolved, That each colony, at their own expense, make such provision by
armed vessels or otherwise, as their respective assemblies, conventions,
or committees of safety shall judge expedient and suitable to their
circumstances and situation, for the protection of their harbors and
navigation of their sea coasts, against all unlawful invasions, attacks,
and depredations, from cutters and ships of war.
Resolved, That it be recommended to the makers of arms for the use of
the Militia, that they make good substantial muskets, with barrels three
feet and half in length, that will carry an ounce ball, and fitted with
a good bayonet and steel ram-rod, and that the making such arms be
encouraged in these United Colonies.
Resolved, Where in any colony a militia is already formed under
regulations approved of by the convention or such colony or by such
assemblies as are annually elective, we refer to the discretion of such
convention or assembly, either to adopt the foregoing regulations in a
whole or in part or to continue their former as they on consideration of
all circumstances, shall think best.
Patriots
DAR has recognized the role of "Patriot" in the Revolutionary War. These were men who did not serve in either the militia or the regiments, but supported the war financially.
Was granted 274 acres for service --'within the limits of the lands allotted the officers and soldiers of the Continental Line by law 14 Oct 1783.' Capt W. Shelby."
James Dunning's name appears on the 1774 tax list of Bertie County.
He served as bondsman along with L. Jenkins when Suthena/Lithena Dunning married James Early 1808, Bertie County. Researcher: Dunning
Patrick was a revolutionary war veteran having enlisted in the Continental Army on July 20 1778 along with John Hoggard. He served as a nine month soldier as a private in the 10th regiment under Capt. William Blount's Company. There was also a William Hoggard who served earlier. David Hoggard [email protected]

Historian Col. John H. Wheeler, recorded in his 1925 Historical Sketches of North Carolina that Capt Jacob Turner was a resident of Bertie County. However, Gerald Thomas, historian, concludes after reviewing carefully many pension records, tht Capt Turner was in fact from Bute County which was in Halifax District.
Capt Turner went with General Nash and fell Oct 4, 1777 in Germantown (outside Philadelphia) General Washington had hoped to
surround and capture most of the British camp north of Philadelphia. But just as they were on the verge of routing of the British troops, the American units became confused in thick fog and smoke, fired on each other, and the advances were reversed. (Casualties: 650 colonists, 550 British) . Buried in Germantown with this monument.

JOSEPH LAWRENCE, N.C. R 6194
His request was rejected; reason not given. Widow was Lucretia. A
letter of inquiry from John S. Gallagher,R. Jan 10, 1854. This was in
regards to any sums coming as pension to Joseph and Lucretia Lawrence.
Chowan County, Feb 8, 1853 Joshua Lawrence aged 60, and Sally Overman,
age 58, residents of Chowan Co., the only children now living of Joseph
and Lucretia Lawrence, both deceased. Joseph had enlisted in Bertie
County for five yars. Died in Bertie County Nov 12, 1820. Lucretia
died in Perquimans Coounty, N.C. May 20, 1840. A deposition from one
George White of Chowan County, N.C. age 94, on Feb 8, 1853 said he was
in Bertie County during the Revolution and knew said Joseph Lawrence
well. Joseph served until the surrender at Yorktown, was wounded at the
Battle of Brandywine. He married before the Revolution. A deposition
of Solomon White of Hertford County dated Aug 22, 1853(aged 86), said
that Joseph Lawrence died in indigent circumstances in Martin County,
N.C. in 1820.
